There is no single national FASTag deactivation page. To stop a FASTag, use the official portal, app or customer-care channel of the bank or issuer agency that issued it. Ask for a temporary block if the tag is lost, a replacement if only the sticker is damaged, or permanent closure of the tag and wallet if you sold the vehicle or no longer need the account.
The issuing bank settles eligible wallet balances and deposits after deducting pending tolls or other dues. NHAI and IHMCL direct customers to the concerned issuer for account closure; their FAQ is not a universal closure portal.
Choose the right action first

“Blocked,” “blacklisted,” “suspended” and “closed” are different statuses. IHMCL says a blacklisted tag cannot pay tolls and may be caused by low balance, a vehicle-class mismatch or improper affixation; it is not proof that the account has been permanently closed. How to deactivate a FASTag online
- Identify the issuer. Check the welcome SMS or email, sticker or packaging, toll-debit messages, the bank’s FASTag app or portal, and your transaction history. You can also check tags linked to the registration number through NPCI’s vehicle-status facility.
- Collect your details. Keep the vehicle registration number, FASTag customer or wallet ID, tag serial number, registered mobile number and the registered owner’s identity documents. For a sale or ownership dispute, keep the vehicle RC and transfer documents. A refund request may require an account number, IFSC, passbook or cancelled cheque.
- Use an official issuer channel. Sign in through the bank’s published FASTag website or app, or use its official FASTag customer-care number or email. Do not use third-party “closure” sites or unsolicited SMS links.
- Open tag or account management. Look for a control labelled Close Account, Close Tag, Surrender Tag, Tag Closure, Deactivate FASTag, Lost/Stolen or Block Tag. Labels and availability vary by issuer.
- Select the reason. Common choices include vehicle sale, duplicate tag, another FASTag provider, loss, theft, damage, scrapping, incorrect vehicle details or no longer needing the service.
- Submit documents and refund details. Upload only what the issuer requests. Ensure the account-holder name and bank details match the issuer’s verification requirements.
- Settle dues. Pending tolls, disputes, a negative wallet balance or other amounts due can delay closure or reduce the amount refunded. NPCI describes manual closure as the route for refunding available funds or clearing dues; see its NETC overview.
- Save proof and remove the sticker. Keep the request number, confirmation message, closure-status screenshot and refund reference. If the vehicle is being transferred, remove and destroy the old windshield sticker.
ICICI FASTag: an example of a self-service closure
ICICI publishes a specific online route. Sign in to the ICICI FASTag portal, open Tag Account Summary, choose Customer Service, then Close Account. Accept the declaration, enter the reason, upload the requested identity and banking documents, enter the refund-bank details and submit Close Account. ICICI says verification may take three business days and that, after approval, the wallet balance is credited to the supplied bank account within 15 days. Its FAQ notes that the tag can briefly show a low-balance or intermediate status before the closure is reflected in NPCI/IHMCL records. These timings and labels apply to ICICI’s published process, not every issuer. See the ICICI FASTag FAQ.
What if your bank has no online closure button?
Some issuers require a FASTag helpdesk request, bank form, branch or kiosk visit, documentation, or return of the physical tag. HDFC’s FAQ instructs customers dealing with a sold or transferred vehicle to contact its helpdesk, while its terms describe documentation and surrender of the tag to HDFC or an authorised representative. Use the issuer’s current official instructions at HDFC’s FASTag FAQ and its terms and conditions.
When contacting support, say: “Please permanently close the FASTag and linked wallet, settle or refund the available balance, and confirm the tag is no longer active.” Ask for a complaint number and written confirmation. Closing a FASTag after selling a car
- Submit permanent closure to the old issuer before or immediately after handover.
- Remove and destroy the old sticker; physical removal alone does not close the wallet.
- Keep the closure and refund confirmation with the sale records.
- Tell the buyer to obtain a new FASTag in the buyer’s own name.
IHMCL states that the original owner should close the account or wallet with the concerned issuer and that the new owner can obtain a new FASTag. FASTag should not be treated as a transferable accessory.

Buying a used vehicle with the previous owner’s FASTag
- Check which tags are linked to the registration number using the NPCI vehicle-status service.
- Contact the issuer shown in that record and explain that ownership has changed.
- Provide the current RC, identity proof and ownership or transfer evidence requested by that issuer.
- Ask the issuer to close or delink the previous owner’s tag, then obtain your own FASTag.
There is no single document list for every bank. If the immediate problem is a toll plaza rejecting the tag, failing to read it or wrongly treating it as blacklisted, call the issuer first and use the NHAI/IHMCL helpline 1033 for toll-plaza-level grievances. The issuer, not 1033, remains the normal route for wallet closure.
What happens to the balance and security deposit?
- The available wallet balance may be refunded after closure.
- A refundable security deposit may be returned under the issuer’s terms.
- Pending tolls, disputes, negative balances and other amounts due may be deducted or must be paid before settlement.
- Fees, documents and processing times vary by issuer and can change.
For example, HDFC’s published FAQ says its security amount and wallet balance are refundable subject to clearance of outstanding transactions and states there is currently no account-closing fee in that FAQ. Treat that as HDFC-specific, not a promise for every bank.

Blacklisted, suspended or low-balance: do you really need closure?
If you still need the FASTag, investigate the status instead of closing it. Possible causes include insufficient balance, an incorrect vehicle class or registration number, incomplete KYC or RC verification, or a sticker that is not properly affixed to the windshield. Ask the issuer for the exact reason and the corrective step.
Opening a new tag can also change the old tag’s status. Under the “One Vehicle One FASTag” policy, only one active tag should remain for a vehicle. NPCI says older active tags may be automatically suspended within 15 days after a new tag is issued if they have not been manually closed. Suspension stops use but is not necessarily wallet closure or a refund, so contact the old issuer when you need settlement.

Lost, stolen or damaged tags
For a lost or stolen tag, call the issuer immediately and request a block or hotlist; do not wait for a full closure and refund process. Ask whether the balance can be transferred to a replacement tag. IHMCL says the issuer may transfer the balance after a new account is obtained.

For a damaged sticker, request replacement from the issuing bank. A replacement can preserve the wallet where the issuer supports it; closing the wallet first may force you to open a new account.

- You have written confirmation that the tag and, if requested, the wallet are closed.
- The issuer portal no longer shows the tag as active.
- The vehicle-linked status has been checked where the facility is available.
- You have a refund, transfer or dues-settlement reference.
- The physical sticker has been removed and destroyed after a sale or permanent closure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I close a FASTag without access to the registered mobile number?
Contact the issuer’s FASTag team and explain that the registered number is unavailable. Expect additional identity, vehicle and account verification; the bank decides which documents it will accept.
Can I deactivate my FASTag from the NHAI website?
NHAI/IHMCL provides information and directs customers to the concerned issuer bank or agency for blocking and closure. Use the issuer’s official portal or helpdesk for the account action.

Does getting a new FASTag automatically close the old one?
Older tags may be suspended under the one-vehicle-one-FASTag system, potentially within 15 days according to NPCI. Suspension is not the same as formal wallet closure or refund, so contact the old issuer if you need settlement.
What should I do if toll money is deducted after I requested closure?
Keep the closure request number and transaction details, contact the issuer’s FASTag grievance team, and ask for an investigation and reversal where applicable. Use 1033 for a toll-plaza-level complaint, not as a substitute for issuer account closure.
Can the same wallet be used with a replacement sticker?
It depends on the issuer and the tag status. Lost, stolen or damaged tags may be replaceable under the existing wallet, while a fully closed or refund-processed wallet generally requires a new FASTag account.
