You still choose the audience, create or control the design, run the storefront, set the price, promote the listing, and handle customer service. The practical goal is to validate a focused product and understand its per-order costs before expanding.
How print on demand works
In a print-on-demand (POD) arrangement, a customer orders through your marketplace listing or online store; a fulfillment provider then produces the item and ships it. For example, a custom T-shirt can be printed after purchase rather than stocked in advance. Shopify describes this supplier-after-order model at Shopify’s print-on-demand overview, and Printful outlines a catalog-based workflow at Printful’s POD guide.
This reduces the need to buy and store finished stock ahead of sales, but it does not make the business free or automatic. Production and shipping are charged per order, and you remain responsible for the offer, storefront, customer expectations, and traffic.
How to create and sell a print-on-demand product
- Choose a specific buyer and product. Start with a definable audience and a small range that makes sense for it. A custom T-shirt may suit one concept; another design may fit a different product. A large catalog of generic designs is not, by itself, a sales plan.
- Make artwork you have the right to use. Create an original design or obtain the necessary rights and licenses. Use the provider’s design tools or upload your artwork, then position and scale it for the selected product and variants. Printful describes product setup in its workflow guide. Platform policies do not settle whether a particular design is legally permitted; for a specific rights question, consult qualified counsel.
- Select a sales channel and connect fulfillment. You can sell through a marketplace such as Etsy or use a standalone storefront such as Shopify. Printful documents integrations with both at its integrations page; Shopify explains using a provider to fulfill store orders at its POD overview. After connecting, check that products, variants, shipping settings, and orders appear correctly in the destination store.
- Build an accurate listing. Check the title, description, tags, images or mockups, size and variant details, shipping origin, and delivery expectations. Make sure the listing tells customers what they are buying and how it will be made and shipped.
- Calculate the price using all relevant costs. Distinguish the customer’s retail price from the provider’s production and shipping charges, then account for channel and payment fees, discounts, refunds, applicable taxes, and marketing. The provider’s displayed profit figure is not necessarily your net business profit.
- Order a sample and inspect it. Printful recommends sampling as part of its workflow. Reviewing the specific item can help you check its print placement, color, size, and packaging before you present it widely. This is a recommended step, not a substitute for checking the provider’s current product and fulfillment details.
- Watch fulfillment and cash flow. The customer pays through your storefront, while the provider may charge you for production and shipping as the order is fulfilled. Understand when those charges are due and how your sales-channel payouts work so you can cover fulfillment costs as orders arrive.
Choose a sales channel by its trade-offs
A marketplace and an independent store are both workable routes; neither is best for every seller. Compare the practical differences before committing.

What Etsy requires when a production partner makes your item
Etsy permits qualifying items based on a seller’s original design to be produced or printed by a third party. Its Creativity Standards say: “Sellers must disclose that an item is made by a production partner, and provide accurate information about where the item is dispatched from.” Etsy identifies that policy as last updated June 10, 2025. Disclose the partner on relevant listings and state the dispatch location accurately.

Etsy distinguishes seller-designed products from generic ready-made goods that the seller neither designed nor had customized by the buyer. Review the current Seller Policy and Creativity Standards before publishing, since platform requirements can change. For intellectual-property complaints and Etsy’s role, see its Intellectual Property Policy; Etsy says it cannot make legal determinations for sellers. Use work you own or have permission to use rather than assuming a slogan, image, character, logo, or brand is available to reproduce.

Estimate the economics for the exact product variant and destination, not a generic item. Printful explains that retail price is separate from provider production and shipping charges, and that its displayed profit is retail price minus production price. See its pricing information and POD workflow. That displayed difference does not account for every expense your business may face.

- Provider production charge for the chosen product and variant
- Provider shipping charge for the destination
- Marketplace or storefront and payment-processing costs
- Discounts, refunds, and customer-service costs
- Marketing expenses and applicable taxes
Use current figures from the provider and sales channel, and state clearly which costs are excluded from any example you publish. There is no universal ideal margin established here, and the available evidence does not support a typical earnings forecast. POD removes the need to purchase finished inventory in advance; it does not remove per-order costs or the need to find customers.
