How to Create a Free WordPress Website for a Small Business in 8 Steps

You can create and publish a basic small-business website for $0 using WordPress.com’s Free plan. It includes hosting, a free .wordpress.com address, themes, pages, and blocks—but your site will display WordPress.com ads, and you cannot use a custom domain as its primary address or install plugins on the Free plan. This guide walks through the no-cost setup and explains when paying for more makes sense.

What “free WordPress website” means

This walkthrough uses WordPress.com, the hosted service. WordPress.com Free costs $0 with no expiration date and currently includes 1 GB of storage, unlimited pages and posts, basic SEO, site statistics, automatic updates, spam protection, and community-based support. Free sites display WordPress.com ads. See the Free plan details and current pricing and plan features.

WordPress.org is different: its software is free, but you arrange hosting and usually a domain yourself. That route gives you more control, along with responsibility for maintenance and troubleshooting. See WordPress.org’s download page and hosting directory.

The Free plan is a reasonable starting point for an informational site with business details, photos, and a clear contact action. It is not a fully branded, feature-unrestricted business website: plugin installation requires a paid plan, and using a custom domain as the primary address requires a paid plan. Automated backups are also unavailable on Free; you can export content and media instead. Sources: SEO and plugin guidance, primary domain address requirements, and backup options.

Before you start: decide what the site should do

A small-business site should help a visitor take one useful action—not merely look attractive. Decide on the main action first, then gather the information a customer needs to take it.

  • Business name, location, and service area.
  • Main services or products and any useful starting prices.
  • Opening hours, phone number, email, and address if customers visit in person.
  • Your primary call to action: call, request a quote, book, visit, or buy.
  • A short, accurate description of the business, plus a logo and original photos if available.

How to create the website in 8 steps

1. Define the website’s goal

Choose one primary result for the site, such as quote requests for a contractor or appointment bookings for a consultant. Make that action visible near the top of the homepage. Other information—services, credentials, location, and hours—should help visitors decide whether to take it.

2. Create a WordPress.com account and choose Free

  1. Go to WordPress.com and create an account with your email address, username, and password.
  2. Choose the option to create a website. WordPress.com creates a site during signup; its site-creation guidance explains the process.
  3. If offered a choice, select the standard DIY builder for this walkthrough. The AI Website Builder is an optional shortcut, but review and rewrite generated copy and layouts so they accurately represent your business. See WordPress.com’s getting-started guidance.
  4. Select the Free plan when asked to choose a plan.

3. Choose a free site address

Choose a short, recognizable address based on your business name. If it is taken, try adding a city or service area, or use a shorter variation. For example, smithplumbingchicago.wordpress.com is clearer than a string of unrelated numbers.

This is a free WordPress.com site address, not ownership of a custom domain such as yourbusiness.com. On the Free plan, a custom domain cannot be the primary site address. WordPress.com says a paid plan is required for that; eligible annual plans may include a new domain for the first year, with standard renewal pricing afterward. Check the terms before purchasing. Sources: primary address requirements and domain registration terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Choose and customize a free design

Pick a free theme or design that makes the business’s contact action easy to find and reads well on a phone. Favor a simple layout, readable type, clear navigation, and room for service details over elaborate animation. WordPress.com’s Free plan includes designs, and its setup guide describes customization with blocks.

  1. Add your logo if you have one.
  2. Choose a restrained set of brand colors and one or two readable fonts.
  3. Replace all demo text, generic claims, and irrelevant images.
  4. Use real business photos where possible; never leave placeholder testimonials or credentials in place.

Design and customization controls depend on plan and theme. Do not count on premium themes or third-party theme installation as part of a fully free setup; check plan limits.

5. Build a homepage around the customer

In the first screen of the homepage, make it easy to understand what you do, who you serve, where you operate, and what to do next. A useful structure is:

  1. Headline: Name the service and location or customer benefit, such as “Residential plumbing repairs in Chicago.”
  2. Short explanation: Describe the business in one or two accurate sentences.
  3. Primary button: Use a direct label such as “Call Now,” “Request a Quote,” or “Book an Appointment.”
  4. Services: Summarize the main offerings rather than listing every possible job.
  5. Reasons to trust you: Include only verifiable reviews, certifications, experience, or guarantees.
  6. About and service area: Introduce the owner or team and identify the areas served.
  7. Contact details: Show phone, email, hours, and location or service area.
  8. Next action: Make the main contact option available again near the bottom.

Use native blocks such as Heading, Paragraph, Image, Columns, Buttons, List, Gallery, Cover, and Social Icons. A form or payment button may depend on the available setup or plan, so do not build the site around a feature before confirming it is available. WordPress.com’s setup overview describes common block elements.

  • Premium Material: The accounting ledger book has a total of 120 pages and 3,000 lines of entries. It is made of 100gsm thick paper to reduce ink leakage; it is equipped with a waterproof and sturdy PP cover to protect the inner pages

  • Ideal For Small Business or Personal Use: An accounting log journal can track your business or personal financial status. With a clear record of transactions, you can find unnecessary expenses or fraudulent charges

6. Add essential business pages

Create the main pages customers need, keeping each focused and accurate:

  • Home: Explain the offer and guide visitors to the primary action.
  • About: Identify the owner or team, relevant experience, location, and credentials where appropriate.
  • Services or Products: For each major offering, explain who it is for, what it includes, where it is available, and how to ask about it or buy it.
  • Contact: Provide a phone number, email, hours, address or service area, and clear instructions for requesting a quote or appointment.

Add an FAQ, testimonials, gallery, pricing, or booking page only when it helps customers make a decision. Privacy, consumer-protection, accessibility, tax, and industry-specific obligations vary by location and business; a generic template is not a guarantee of legal compliance.

To add a page, WordPress.com’s current guidance says to open the dashboard, select Pages, then Add new page, add a title and blocks, and select Publish. Interface labels can vary by account and editor; see getting started with WordPress.com.

7. Set up navigation and contact paths

Keep the menu small: Home, Services, About, and Contact are usually enough. Use descriptive labels, put the main action in the header if the design permits, and make sure the logo links to Home. Use a clickable phone number on mobile and ensure that menu items point to published pages, not drafts. WordPress.com covers navigation in its getting-started guidance and website setup overview.

8. Test, publish, and promote the site

New WordPress.com sites start in Coming Soon mode. When the site is ready, use the site’s launch or visibility setting to make it public; the exact controls may vary by interface. Confirm it is public by opening the address in a private browser window. See WordPress.com’s getting-started guidance.

Before launch, check the site on a phone and review every action a customer might take:

  • Menu links, buttons, logo link, and page URLs.
  • Phone, email, form, and booking instructions.
  • Business hours, address, service area, and prices.
  • Spelling, image quality, useful alternative text, and readable contrast.
  • That no demo copy, placeholder claims, or irrelevant photos remain.
  • That search-engine visibility is not disabled.

After launch, add the address to your email signature, business listings, social profiles, invoices, and printed materials. Keep customer-facing hours and contact details current. WordPress.com includes basic site statistics on the Free plan, but statistics do not guarantee search traffic or business results.

What the Free plan does—and does not—cover

Need WordPress.com Free What to know
Hosting and address Hosted site with a free WordPress.com address A custom domain cannot be the primary address on Free. Source
Storage and publishing 1 GB storage; unlimited pages and posts These are current plan details, not unlimited storage or design resources. Source
Advertising WordPress.com ads appear on free sites Ad removal is a paid-plan benefit. Source
Plugins Plugin installation is not included WordPress.com identifies plugin installation as a paid-plan feature. Source
SEO Basic SEO and site statistics Being crawlable does not guarantee indexing, rankings, or immediate visibility. Source
Backups No automated backups Export content as WordPress XML and download media-library files. Source
SSL Free SSL for domains and subdomains hosted on WordPress.com SSL is provided automatically; it does not replace account security or backups. Source
Support Community-based support Full priority support is not a Free-plan feature. Source
Email and commerce Professional email and full store capability are not included by default Email is an additional service; payments, plugins, and WooCommerce features depend on plan and setup. Email source; plan source

Will a free WordPress.com site appear in Google?

WordPress.com says sites are optimized for search engines by default and includes basic SEO features. That does not promise indexing or rankings. Make the site public, write useful text about the actual business and its services, use clear page titles and headings, add descriptive alternative text to meaningful images, and keep contact and location details consistent. WordPress.com’s SEO guidance also notes that a .wpcomstaging.com address is not indexed by default.

When should a business pay for more?

Do not upgrade just because a site exists. Consider paying when a specific business need outweighs the cost: a custom primary domain, removal of WordPress.com ads, plugin functionality, increased storage, automated backups and restoration, advanced integrations, or a full ecommerce setup. WordPress.com’s pricing page lists plan-dependent features; prices can vary by location and billing cycle, so confirm currency, taxes, promotions, and renewal terms at checkout.

If you need a full online store with inventory, shipping, tax handling, or advanced checkout, do not assume the Free plan is enough. Compare the paid plan requirements and commerce options before building around them. If you would rather control hosting and install software independently, self-hosted WordPress.org is another route, but you must arrange hosting and maintain the site. A visual drag-and-drop workflow is available from Wix, while Squarespace is a paid-first alternative; compare each platform against your budget and feature needs rather than assuming one is universally best. Sources: WordPress.com versus hosting options, Wix plans, and Squarespace pricing.

Common problems and fixes

The site name is unavailable

Try adding the city or service area, simplifying the spelling, or choosing a shorter business variation. You can start with an available free address and reconsider a custom domain later.

The site still says “Coming Soon”

Check the site’s launch or privacy setting and switch it to public, then test the address in a private browser window. See WordPress.com’s launch guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A feature or plugin is missing

Check whether the feature requires a paid plan, plugin-enabled hosting, a business or commerce plan, or a separate service. Confirm it on the plan comparison before redesigning around it.

The site is not appearing in Google

First confirm that the site is public and search visibility is not disabled. Check that pages contain useful text and descriptive titles, and avoid relying on a staging address. Indexing and search visibility take time and are not guaranteed. See WordPress.com’s SEO guidance.

You need to keep a copy of the site

Free-plan users can export site content as WordPress XML and download their media library; automated backups are not included. Make those exports periodically and store them somewhere separate from the site. See backup and export instructions.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
