To compare gold quotes, convert them to the same weight unit using the mass ratio: divide a price per troy ounce by 31.1034768 to get the price per gram, or multiply it by 3/8 to get the price per tola. A troy ounce is not the same as an ordinary ounce, and the conversion does not adjust for purity, fees, or a dealer’s deductions.
Know the weight units before comparing quotes
Gold is commonly quoted by the troy ounce, while jewelry and local-market prices may be stated per gram or tola. The conversion factors below let you express the same weight in a different unit.

For quick mental calculations, 31.1035 grams per troy ounce is usually close enough. Use the longer factor for calculations, then round the final price to an appropriate currency precision.
Convert a quoted price to another unit
Keep the currency unchanged and apply the weight ratio to the unit price. In general:

Price per target unit = price per source unit × (mass of target unit ÷ mass of source unit)

For example, NIST’s conversion chart uses an illustrative price of $1,181.93 per troy ounce. Dividing by 31.1034768 gives $38 per gram. That is a calculation example from the chart, not a current gold price. See NIST’s conversion chart and precious-metals guidance.
Make sure “ounce” means troy ounce
An ordinary ounce weighs about 28.3495 grams; a troy ounce weighs 31.1034768 grams. Using the ordinary-ounce figure for a gold quote will produce the wrong per-gram conversion. If a quote simply says “ounce,” confirm with the seller or source that it means a troy ounce.

Separate weight conversion from purity and sale terms
Converting units changes the way a quote is expressed; it does not tell you how much fine gold an item contains or what a buyer will offer. Jewelry’s gross weight includes alloy metals and may include non-gold components. A karat mark or stated fineness is a separate consideration, and unit conversion alone does not verify it.
NIST’s Office of Weights and Measures conversion chart, marked as revised March 2015, cautions that buyer and seller offers usually reflect reductions based on karat content and deductions for other factors. NIST’s chart explains the distinction.

For a fair offer comparison, normalize each quote to the same currency, quote time, weight unit, purity or fineness basis, and fee or deduction basis. If useful, calculate a price per gram of fine gold, then list premiums, assay charges, and other deductions separately rather than folding them into the weight conversion.
Bar specifications also show why gross mass and fine-gold content differ. The LBMA conversion table lists 10-tola bars as containing 3.731 fine troy ounces at fineness 995.0, 3.746 at 999.0, and 3.75 at 999.9; the published values are rounded. View the LBMA conversion table.

What standards say about quoting precious metals
NIST reproduces Section 2.17 of Handbook 130, the Uniform Regulation for the Method of Sale of Commodities. It says that when a precious-metals price is based partly or wholly on weight, the unit of measure and method of sale should be troy weight or SI units. When the sale is expressed in SI mass units, a conversion chart to troy units should be prominently displayed to help buyers compare prices. Read the NIST guidance and reproduced regulation.
Checklist for comparing two gold offers
- Unit: Identify whether each quote is per gram, tola, or troy ounce; confirm that “ounce” means troy ounce.
- Currency and time: Convert currencies and align quote times when comparing market-linked offers.
- Purity: Distinguish gross item weight from fine-gold content; do not assume jewelry weight is all gold.
- Deductions and premiums: Record fees, assay charges, dealer margins, and other deductions separately from the unit conversion.
A scale that displays grams can help establish an item’s weight before you calculate a unit price. It does not test purity or establish what the item is worth.
