Compare U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs) on the same dates across four separate measures: the ongoing sponsor fee, trading costs such as bid-ask spreads, liquidity in dollar volume, and returns against each fund’s stated bitcoin benchmark. Then check whether the exchange price has traded at a premium or discount to net asset value (NAV). No single fee, volume figure, or past tracking result identifies a permanent winner.
What “spot Bitcoin ETF” means in this comparison
“ETF” is common shorthand, but many U.S. spot Bitcoin products are trusts that hold bitcoin directly and are not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Their legal framework and protections are therefore not identical to those of registered mutual funds or conventional ETFs. Review each product’s prospectus for its structure, custody arrangements, and risks. See the SEC filings and trust disclosures referenced in BlackRock’s filing and the June 30, 2026 Form 10-Q.
Compare the costs investors actually face
Ongoing sponsor or management fee
Start with the current prospectus or issuer page. Record the stated annual fee and, if applicable, distinguish the gross fee from a temporarily waived or reduced fee. Include the waiver’s conditions and end date: a promotional net fee is not necessarily the long-term rate.
For a dated illustration, BlackRock’s iShares page listed a 0.25% sponsor fee for IBIT on October 2, 2026. Bitwise listed a 0.20% management fee for BITB on September 30, 2026. These are issuer-reported snapshots from different dates, not a complete, same-day comparison of the market. The iShares IBIT page and Bitwise BITB page are the places to verify current terms.
#1 Best Overall
Spread and brokerage charges
The annual fee is not the whole cost. The bid-ask spread is the gap between the price available to buy and the price available to sell; it creates execution friction when entering or exiting a position. Brokerage commissions or other charges may apply as well, depending on the account and broker.
Compare spreads over matching windows and note how each issuer calculates them. Bitwise says its 30-day median spread is calculated by sampling the national best bid and offer (NBBO) at the end of each ten-second interval on trading days in the trailing 30 calendar days, dividing the bid-ask difference by the midpoint, and taking the median. Its page reported a 0.02% 30-day median spread as of September 30, 2026. That figure is useful only with its measurement method and date attached; spreads change with trading conditions.

Grayscale’s issuer comparison notes that spread can be more salient for short holding periods, while a recurring management fee accumulates over longer periods. Treat that as a useful distinction, not a universal rule: the effect on a particular investor depends on the trade, holding period, and actual execution.
Assess liquidity with both dollar volume and spread
Trading volume indicates how much has traded; the spread indicates visible price friction. Use both, measured over the same period. Share-count volume alone can mislead when products have different share prices, so convert volume into dollar trading volume before comparing scale. Assets under management are not a substitute for these trading measures.

For example, iShares reported IBIT’s 30-day average volume as 47,886,474 shares and its daily volume as 48,699,106 shares on October 2, 2026. These are issuer-reported share counts, not dollar volume and not, by themselves, proof that IBIT was the easiest or cheapest product to trade. Pair current dollar volume with a consistently measured spread and consider the time of day and market conditions.
Measure tracking against the right benchmark
“Tracking error” is meaningful only when the benchmark and measurement period are specified. Identify the reference rate or index each product seeks to follow, then compare the fund’s NAV total return with that benchmark over identical start and end dates and using the same return convention. Fees, expenses, benchmark construction, and timing can all affect the result.
Rank #4
IBIT identifies the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate – New York Variant as its benchmark. BlackRock’s June 30, 2026 Form 10-Q says the trust seeks to reflect bitcoin’s price before expenses and liabilities. A comparison that uses another fund’s different reference rate, or mismatched dates, cannot establish which fund tracked better.
Keep NAV-based performance distinct from the return an investor might have realized by trading shares on an exchange. After comparing NAV return with the benchmark, examine the market-price return and the premium or discount to NAV over the same dates. Those are related but separate sources of difference.

Check premiums and discounts to NAV separately
NAV estimates the value of a fund’s assets per share; the exchange price is what buyers and sellers are trading at. The two can diverge, so review the premium/discount history as well as the spread. A spread describes the gap between buy and sell quotes; a premium or discount describes market price relative to NAV. Neither measure replaces the other.
A prospectus warns: “The market price of an ETF’s shares may deviate from the value of the ETF’s underlying portfolio holdings, particularly in times of market stress, with the result that investors may pay significantly more or receive significantly less than the underlying value of the shares of the ETF bought or sold.” See the filed prospectus risk discussion.
A repeatable comparison workflow
- Set one observation window. Choose matching dates for every fund and record the as-of date beside every figure. Do not combine a current fee with a months-old spread or return and present the result as a same-period ranking.
- Check each issuer page and prospectus. Record the ongoing fee, waiver terms and expiration, benchmark name and methodology, trust structure, custody, and stated risks.
- Measure execution cost. Record the issuer’s spread metric and lookback method, then account for any brokerage charges relevant to the trade.
- Compare trading liquidity. Use dollar volume and spread over the same window. Treat share volume and assets as context, not a stand-alone liquidity verdict.
- Compare tracking. Calculate or obtain NAV total returns and benchmark returns for the same dates and convention. Review market-price returns and premium/discount behavior separately.
- Keep the conclusion bounded. State what the chosen period shows, not which product will necessarily be cheapest or track best in the future.
How to read published comparisons
A Grayscale/Bloomberg comparison published March 10, 2026 used observations dated February 28, 2026. It listed gross expense ratios of 0.15% for Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF (BTC) and 0.25% for IBIT, alongside trading-volume, average-spread, and premium/discount measures. Because it was issuer-produced, labeled for investment-professional use, and based on February observations, use it as an example of metrics to examine—not as a neutral or current market-wide ranking. The Grayscale comparison should be read with those qualifications.
The available examples have different dates and do not provide every metric for every product. They cannot support a reliable overall ranking of current total cost or tracking across the full U.S. spot Bitcoin ETP universe. Recheck issuer pages and filings when making a real comparison; fees and market measures can change.
