How to Compare Products by Repairability, Software Support, and Upgradeability

Repairability, software support, and upgradeability are different measures. Compare each for the exact model, region, and ownership period before you buy.

Compare repairability, software support, and upgradeability as three separate questions for the exact model and regional version you plan to buy. A device can be easy to repair but lose software support early; it can receive years of updates while its battery or storage is difficult to replace. None of those facts alone tells you the product’s total cost over the time you expect to own it.

Start with the exact model and your ownership horizon

Before comparing products, record the full model name or number, regional variant, and the date you checked the information. Different variants can use different components or have different service and update terms. Use the same region and assumptions for every option.

Then estimate how long you expect to keep the product and which failures or limitations would make you replace it. For a phone, that might mean a worn battery or cracked screen; for a computer, insufficient memory or storage; for an appliance, a failed control board. The relevant comparison is whether the product can remain useful, secure, and economical to maintain over that period.

How repairable is the product?

Look beyond a repair score or a claim that a component is replaceable. Check which likely failure points can actually be serviced, who can do the work, and what the repair requires.

  • Parts that matter: Check whether the battery, screen, storage, controls, or other likely failure points can be replaced without discarding the whole product.
  • Repair method: Look for a service manual or repair instructions, disassembly steps, required tools, and whether adhesives or other design choices make access difficult.
  • Software dependencies: Find out whether a replacement needs pairing, calibration, firmware, or manufacturer software, and whether independent repairers can access what they need.
  • Who can repair it: Compare manufacturer service, independent repair, and any repair you could reasonably do yourself. A theoretically replaceable part is not useful if the required service route is unavailable to you.

For smartphones and slate tablets covered by the EU energy-labelling regime, the label includes a repairability class from A (most repairable) to E (least repairable). The European Commission says the model details are available through EPREL. Treat the class as one comparison point: it does not establish the repair price, software-support period, or whether you can upgrade the device. See the Commission’s smartphones and tablets product guidance.

Can you get parts and afford the repair?

For each product, check the availability, price, and expected delivery time of common replacement parts. Note whether a price covers the part alone or includes labour, diagnosis, shipping, and taxes. Compare manufacturer service with independent repair quotes where possible, and check whether warranty coverage or a statutory guarantee could apply before paying for work.

EU ecodesign requirements for covered smartphones and tablets have applied since 20 June 2025. The European Commission’s current guidance describes critical spare parts as available for seven years after the model’s end of sales in the EU, with specified critical parts to be available to repairers within 5–10 working days. It also describes non-discriminatory access for professional repairers to software or firmware needed for replacement. These periods and conditions concern covered products and specified parts; check the applicable rule and part category before relying on them for a particular repair. The guidance also describes batteries in covered devices as meeting a minimum of 800 charge/discharge cycles while retaining at least 80% of initial capacity. That is a specified battery requirement, not a promise that every battery will retain that capacity under every person’s use. See the European Commission’s smartphones and tablets product guidance.

How long will it get software updates?

Find the manufacturer’s stated support duration or end date for the exact model and region. Record when the period starts: it may be tied to launch, purchase, or another event. A duration without a start point is difficult to compare meaningfully.

Separate security updates from operating-system upgrades. A security-update commitment does not promise a particular number of major OS versions, new features, or future app compatibility. Also check whether updates come directly from the product maker or depend on another vendor, carrier, or service provider; that can affect timing and delivery.

For covered smartphones and tablets in the EU, the Commission describes a requirement for operating-system upgrades for at least five years from the date the last unit of a model is placed on the market. This is not a five-year period starting on each buyer’s purchase date. Confirm that the specific model is covered and distinguish this EU rule from any separate manufacturer promise. See the European Commission’s smartphones and tablets product guidance.

Can you upgrade it later?

Identify which parts can be changed after purchase without replacing the whole product. Depending on the product, these may include memory, storage, a battery, or modular accessories. Verify the answer in documentation for the exact model; a brand’s general policy or the fact that a product belongs to a certain category is not enough.

  • Check available capacities and compatible parts, not just whether a component is removable.
  • Note any required tools, skill, software, or calibration.
  • Check whether an upgrade affects warranty coverage or software support.
  • Compare the likely upgrade cost with the price of buying a higher-capacity version now.

Repairability and upgradeability overlap, but they answer different questions. Replacing a failed battery restores a component; adding memory or storage changes the product’s capabilities. A repair score is not a guide to the cost or feasibility of future upgrades.

Use EU protections carefully

EU rules can add useful protections, but their scope and dates matter. Under the EU’s consumer guidance, the two-year legal guarantee is with the seller, not the manufacturer. The same guidance says software updates should keep a product with a digital element usable and cyber-secure, and that the seller remains responsible if updates fail; it distinguishes updates from upgrades. See Your Europe’s guarantee guidance, last checked 29 April 2026.

Directive (EU) 2024/1799 had to be transposed into national rules and applies from 31 July 2026. For products in scope—goods subject to relevant EU repairability requirements and listed in Annex II—the Commission describes manufacturer repair within a reasonable time and for a reasonable price, limits on unjustified barriers to repair, and requirements to make repair-service information accessible. The Commission also says that from 31 July 2026 consumers can request repair of technically repairable products covered by EU law; choosing repair instead of replacement during the liability period extends the legal guarantee by at least 12 months. Scope depends on the applicable product rules. Check the Commission’s repair of goods guidance and your country’s implementing rules rather than assuming every product is covered.

Build a like-for-like comparison

Use a short record for each candidate. If a detail is not published or you cannot verify it, mark it as unknown instead of assuming the most favourable answer.

Comparison item What to record
Model and region Exact model number, variant, market, and date checked
Repair access Replaceable failure points, instructions, tools, repair routes, and software or calibration requirements
Parts and service Part availability, quoted price, delivery time, labour and other charges, and warranty or guarantee route
Software support Security-update end date or duration and OS-upgrade commitment, each with its start point and regional scope
Upgrade options Changeable components, compatible options, limits, tools, and cost
Ownership impact Likely wear, downtime, repair expense, and whether the product will remain useful for your planned period

Prefer evidence in this order: official support pages and service manuals; parts catalogues and explicit, dated update commitments; applicable regulatory labels or registries; and independent teardown or repair assessments that explain their method. Record the source and date for each important claim, since product pages and part availability can change.

Compare the cost of keeping each product

A single repairability grade cannot tell you which product is cheaper to own. Consider the likely repair or upgrade you may need, the price and wait for parts, service labour, downtime, and the period for which software and related services are expected to remain usable. A low-cost repair may still be a poor choice if the product will soon lose needed support; a less upgradeable product may still suit you if its parts and service are accessible and its capacity meets your needs.

Choose the option whose repair routes, support timeline, and upgrade limits fit your expected use—not simply the one with the best score or longest headline promise.
