How to Compare Music-Streaming Services by Price, Catalog, and Audio Quality

A fair music-streaming comparison starts with equivalent plans, then tests catalog fit and whether your devices can make use of the advertised audio quality.

Compare music-streaming services on the same country and plan, then check whether each one carries the recordings you actually want and whether its audio formats work with your equipment. A headline catalog count or “Hi-Res” label alone cannot tell you which subscription is the best value for you.

Start with a like-for-like price comparison

Write down your country, currency, tax treatment, plan type, and the number of people who will use the subscription. Compare recurring prices for equivalent plans—not a family plan against an individual plan, and not a temporary trial price against a standard monthly rate. A family plan’s total only makes sense when you consider how many people will share it.

On the US pages checked on October 4, 2026, Apple Music lists Individual at $11.99 per month, Family at $19.99 for up to six people, and Student at $6.99. Apple says the student plan includes Apple TV access. TIDAL lists Individual at $11.99 per month, Family at $19.99 for up to six members, and DJ at $19.99; its listed prices are plus applicable taxes. These are provider-listed US rates and can change or differ by location.

Service and plan US-listed monthly price Household or plan detail
Apple Music Individual $11.99 Individual plan
Apple Music Family $19.99 Shareable with up to five other people
Apple Music Student $6.99 Apple says Apple TV access is included
TIDAL Individual $11.99 plus applicable taxes Individual plan
TIDAL Family $19.99 plus applicable taxes Up to six members
TIDAL DJ $19.99 plus applicable taxes Requires compatible DJ software

Sources: Apple Music and TIDAL Pricing. TIDAL’s official pages displayed inconsistent Student prices, so a current student rate is not established here. Spotify’s US plan page did not return readable plan details, Amazon Music Unlimited’s page returned an internal error, and YouTube Music’s page returned browser compatibility content; their current prices are therefore not stated here. See the providers’ pages for any details they make available: Spotify Premium (US), Amazon Music Unlimited, and YouTube Music.

Check the catalog against your own listening

Catalog totals indicate scale, not whether a service has your preferred version of a particular recording. Apple advertises over 100 million songs; TIDAL advertises over 180 million. Both figures are provider claims, not independent catalog audits. Neither total guarantees that a specific album, live recording, remaster, or specialist release is available in your country.

Before switching, make a short list of the music you would miss if it were absent. Search each service for:

  • The particular edition you prefer, such as a remaster, live version, or clean or explicit release.
  • Classical works by composer, performer, ensemble, or recording—where specialist browsing matters.

Apple says Apple Music Classical is included and offers specialized classical catalog browsing and search. Apple describes it as having the “world’s largest classical music catalog”; treat that as Apple’s own claim, not an independently verified ranking. Apple’s overall catalog figure is also its own claim. See Apple Music.

Understand what audio-quality labels mean in practice

Separate four questions: whether the stream is lossy or lossless, the resolution offered, whether the exact track is available in that format, and whether your playback setup can deliver it. Lossless means the audio data is preserved in the compressed file; it does not guarantee that every track is lossless or that every listener will hear a difference. No controlled listening test or universal audible ranking is established here.

Apple Music formats

Apple describes Lossless as up to 48 kHz and Hi-Res Lossless as 48 kHz to 192 kHz. Apple says Hi-Res Lossless requires external equipment such as a USB DAC. Lossless files also use more bandwidth and storage than standard AAC, which can matter when streaming on mobile data or downloading music for offline listening. Apple advertises Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos as well as lossless options; immersive audio is a separate consideration from lossless resolution. Details are on Apple Music.

TIDAL formats

TIDAL describes FLAC as stereo lossless and HiRes FLAC as above 16-bit/44.1 kHz, with files as large as 24-bit/192 kHz. Its Max quality setting selects the best source available for a track from HiRes FLAC, FLAC, or AAC, so Max does not mean every recording is available in the highest format. TIDAL also lists Dolby Atmos and advises checking DAC support for HiRes FLAC; it recommends wired or Wi-Fi connections for the full experience. See TIDAL Sound Quality.

For either service, the result depends on more than the subscription label: the track’s available source, app settings, device, connection, DAC where needed, and headphones or speakers all play a part. If you use Bluetooth or another wireless path, do not assume it preserves every format in the advertised chain. Higher sample rates are not automatically better-sounding to every listener.

Compare the practical features you will actually use

Price, catalog, and sound are central, but the best-value plan also has to fit your routine. Check support for your phone, computer, car, speakers, smart TV, and other playback devices before committing. Apple lists availability across Apple platforms and also Android, Windows, Sonos, smart TVs, and other devices; verify the specific device and feature you need on the service’s current page.

  • Offline listening: Check whether downloads are available on your plan and how much device storage your preferred audio quality requires.
  • Household sharing: Compare the eligible member count with the people who will use the plan.
  • Specialized browsing: If classical repertoire is important, evaluate search and catalog tools rather than relying only on a total song count.
  • DJ use: TIDAL’s DJ plan provides catalog access through compatible DJ software; select partners support additional functions such as stem separation and offline mode. Confirm that your software and desired functions are supported before paying for this tier. See TIDAL Pricing.
  • Immersive audio: If Dolby Atmos matters to you, verify that the specific recordings and your playback devices support it.

Use a short trial to make the final call

If a service offers a trial in your country, test it with the same handful of tracks and the same listening equipment you normally use. Match the track versions where possible, keep volume as similar as you can, and check the interface, catalog availability, and playback settings as well as sound. This is a personal comparison method, not a controlled audio test; your preference is more useful than a format label if you are choosing for everyday listening.
