A transfer bonus is worthwhile only if it helps you book an award you can actually use at a competitive total cost. Check award seats for your exact trip first, calculate the bank points needed after the offer’s bonus, add the cash charges, and compare the result with the same trip’s cash fare and other booking options. A bonus increases the miles you receive; it does not create award inventory.
Start with the trip, not the bonus percentage
Write down the origin, destination, travel dates or acceptable date range, cabin, number of travelers, and acceptable stops. These details determine whether an award is useful: a seat for one passenger on a different date is not a solution if you need two seats on a fixed date.
Search for the itinerary through the loyalty program that would issue the award ticket. A search service can help surface dates and programs, but treat its results as leads: refresh and confirm the passenger count, itinerary, price, and bookability with the issuing program before transferring points. AwardTool advises travelers to “confirm availability before transferring points or booking” (AwardTool).
Confirm award availability and who operates the flight
Availability is a gate, not a minor adjustment to value. Delta says award seats are capacity-controlled and may be limited; Qatar Airways says award seats are subject to availability. Partner awards can have separate restrictions: American’s terms distinguish American-operated award availability from partner limitations, and Delta notes that partner-operated award seats may be limited (Delta: Travel with Miles; Delta SkyMiles Program Rules; Qatar Airways Privilege Club terms; American AAdvantage terms).

Check the program you intend to transfer into, not just the operating airline’s website. A seat that appears on one carrier’s search may not be bookable through a partner, or may be available in a different quantity. Recheck the itinerary immediately before transferring and again before paying, because inventory and quoted charges can change.
Calculate the bank points required after the bonus
Use the actual award price in airline miles and the transfer ratio stated in the offer’s official terms. For a straightforward 20% bonus, 1 source point would yield 1.2 airline miles. If an award costs 60,000 miles, the nominal requirement is 60,000 ÷ 1.2 = 50,000 source points, before any minimum transfer increment, cap, eligibility restriction, or other offer condition.

- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
That is an arithmetic example, not a live offer. Verify the eligible bank currency, bonus ratio, offer dates, caps, rounding or transfer increments, and posting rules with the bank. A point.me guide illustrates the arithmetic with 1,000 points becoming 1,250 miles under a 25% bonus, and gives an example of a 117,000-Avios award requiring 98,000 Chase points under a 20% bonus (point.me guide). Those figures illustrate a calculation; they do not describe an offer currently available to you.
Add the award’s cash charges
Record the final amount due for the itinerary, including government or airport taxes, carrier-imposed or partner surcharges, and any other applicable charge. Do not treat an estimate from a search tool as the final checkout total.

Charges depend on route and program. Delta’s Travel with Miles page says U.S. domestic awards require at least $11.20 in U.S. government taxes and fees, while international awards may include up to $600 in foreign government taxes and fees and/or carrier-imposed fees; these are Delta’s stated bounds, not typical or guaranteed charges for a particular trip. Delta’s SkyMiles rules also specify a $5.60 September 11th Security Fee per one-way trip and describe other itinerary-dependent charges (Delta: Travel with Miles; Delta SkyMiles Program Rules). Qatar lists duties, taxes, surcharges, passenger and carrier charges, visa costs, and other applicable airport, customs, and government charges; American likewise makes passengers responsible for applicable fees and surcharges (Qatar Airways Privilege Club terms; American AAdvantage terms).
Compare the same trip against cash and other points options
Compare the award with the cash fare for the same dates, route, cabin, and number of travelers. If relevant, also check the cost through your card’s travel portal and the points required through other transfer partners. A comparison is meaningful only when the itineraries and traveler counts are comparable.

One way to express the award’s value to you is:
Cents per source point = (comparable cash fare − award cash charges) ÷ source points used × 100
This is a personal comparison, not a universal value for every bank point. It assumes you would otherwise pay the comparable cash fare and that you value the award itinerary similarly. A point.me guide labels values above 1.25 cents per point “Good” and above 2.5 cents “Great”; those are point.me’s own heuristics, not an industry standard or a guarantee that a redemption suits your needs (point.me guide).

Include flexibility and transfer risk in the decision
A favorable calculation can still be a poor fit if it leaves you with unusable miles or too little flexibility. Before transferring, consider:
- Leftover miles: Will the transfer leave a balance you can use for another award?
- Transfer mechanics: Check the bank’s current transfer timing, minimum increment, and whether a transfer can be reversed. These policies vary; do not assume points can be moved back.
- Ticket changes and cancellations: Review the issuing program’s rules for this award. Delta says terms can depend partly on the point of origin and fare type; American says fees or additional miles may apply after ticketing (Delta SkyMiles Program Rules; American AAdvantage terms).
- Timing: If inventory could disappear while a transfer is processing, weigh that risk before moving points. Confirm the bank’s stated timing and the airline’s live award space rather than relying on an assumed instant transfer.
Use a side-by-side check before moving points
| What to compare | What to record |
|---|---|
| Award availability | Program that will issue the ticket, operating carrier, dates, cabin, and seats bookable for your full traveler count |
| Source points required | Award miles divided by the offer’s effective transfer ratio, adjusted for the official terms and transfer increments |
| Cash due | Final taxes, fees, and surcharges shown for the exact award itinerary |
| Alternative cost | Cash fare for the same trip, plus relevant portal or other transfer-partner options |
| Flexibility and risk | Transfer timing and reversibility, leftover balance, and award change or cancellation terms |
Proceed only when the intended seats are bookable, the final cash charges are acceptable, and the points-plus-cash cost compares favorably with alternatives you would genuinely use. No particular bank-to-airline bonus, deadline, eligibility rule, or posting time is established here; check the current official offer before acting.
