How to Compare AI Chip Stocks: Revenue, Margins, Valuation, and Risk

Compare AI chip stocks by their place in the AI infrastructure chain, growth, margins, valuation assumptions, and exposure to shared customer and supply risks.

Compare AI chip stocks by the business each company actually sells into AI infrastructure, the growth and profitability of those businesses, the risks that could interrupt demand or delivery, and the expectations embedded in the share price. NVIDIA, AMD, and Broadcom have different business models, and owning several names may still leave a portfolio exposed to the same hyperscaler spending cycle.

Start with what each company sells into AI infrastructure

“AI chip stock” covers businesses at different points in the infrastructure chain. A company may sell accelerators, custom silicon, networking equipment, or products for markets beyond AI. Its consolidated revenue therefore may not move in step with AI demand.

Company AI-related products and position What to keep in view
NVIDIA Data Center products for accelerated computing and AI. In its FY2027 second-quarter filing, NVIDIA said Blackwell made up the majority of system shipments; Vera Rubin began production shipments in the third quarter of FY2027. Data Center performance is central to the AI case, but customer infrastructure and capital availability can affect the timing of deployments. NVIDIA Form 10-Q
AMD Instinct AI accelerators, EPYC server processors, networking products, and its previewed Helios rack-scale platform. AMD’s fiscal 2025 filing described deployments of Instinct MI350X GPUs by large hyperscale customers, OEMs, and ODMs. Assess the broader data-center portfolio, not only accelerator sales. AMD Form 10-K
Broadcom Custom AI accelerators, or XPUs, plus Ethernet switching and routing, NICs, optical components, and systems. Broadcom also has semiconductor businesses outside AI and infrastructure software, so consolidated results do not by themselves establish AI-specific performance. Broadcom Form 10-K
Marvell A sector overview lists Marvell among designers of AI chips or components. The primary filings cited here do not establish a detailed current financial comparison for Marvell. Kiplinger industry overview, October 1, 2026

This supply-chain view helps keep unlike businesses from being treated as interchangeable. As the Kiplinger overview puts it, “Where a company sits on that chain tells you more about its investment case than any AI narrative in its earnings call.” That is an editorial observation, not a company forecast or a measured financial result.

Compare revenue growth on a like-for-like basis

Before comparing growth rates, identify the segment and period behind each number. Check the fiscal year-end, whether the figure is quarterly or annual, and how much of the reported business is actually tied to AI. A Data Center segment, for example, can include products beyond AI accelerators.

  • Separate reported segment revenue from management’s AI-specific figures. Definitions can differ, so do not treat them as directly comparable without checking what each includes.
  • Use the same type of period where possible—quarter against quarter or full year against full year—and label fiscal periods explicitly.
  • Look for evidence of customer breadth and repeat deployments, not just a large headline growth rate. A concentrated customer base can make growth more dependent on a small number of purchasing decisions.
  • Distinguish recognized sales from commitments, forecasts, and production plans. Those measures describe different stages of demand and delivery.

NVIDIA reported $279 billion in supply and capacity commitments as of July 26, 2026, compared with $119 billion the prior quarter. The filing describes company-reported commitments, not recognized revenue or a guarantee that the demand will be realized. NVIDIA Form 10-Q

Read margins alongside product mix and unusual charges

Gross margin shows how much revenue remains after cost of revenue; operating margin also accounts for operating expenses. Free cash flow adds another perspective by reflecting cash generation after capital spending. None of these measures is a standalone verdict: product mix, business mix, and one-off charges can alter the comparison.

Issuer and period Reported figure or charge Context for comparison
NVIDIA, FY2027 second quarter and first half, reported in 2026 75.0% gross margin The filing attributed improvement in part to product mix. NVIDIA also said a $4.5 billion H20 excess-inventory and purchase-obligation charge affected the prior-year first-half comparison. NVIDIA Form 10-Q
AMD, fiscal 2025, reported in its 2026 Form 10-K 50% gross margin, up one percentage point from 2024 AMD reported approximately $440 million in net inventory and related charges associated with U.S. government export controls on MI308 products. AMD Form 10-K

These figures cover different companies and fiscal periods, so they are not a direct peer ranking. For each company, review operating margin and cash flow as well as gross margin, and check whether reported or adjusted earnings are being used. When a company presents adjusted results, inspect its definition and reconciliation rather than assuming those earnings are equivalent to reported results.

Test what the valuation assumes

A stock can be tied to a fast-growing market and still disappoint if its price already assumes even faster growth or sustained high profitability. Compare valuation measures using a common market-data date and consistent reporting periods:

  • Price-to-earnings (P/E): Compare price with earnings per share. Trailing P/E uses reported past earnings; forward P/E uses estimates and therefore depends on forecast assumptions.
  • Enterprise value relative to sales or operating earnings: These measures can help compare businesses with different capital structures, but a sales multiple does not show whether revenue turns into profit or cash.
  • Free-cash-flow yield: Relates free cash flow to the value of the business or equity, depending on the convention used. Check the definition and period so comparisons use the same basis.

Then ask what revenue growth, margins, and cash conversion the current price requires. Consider a slower-growth or lower-margin case and how it would change the implied valuation. Do not mix reported earnings for one company with adjusted earnings for another without clearly reconciling the difference.

There is no synchronized set of share prices, consensus estimates, or peer multiples here to support a current claim that one named stock is cheaper or better valued. A live comparison needs a common market-data date, consistent fiscal or forward periods, and a source for each multiple.

Compare risks that can interrupt demand, delivery, or profits

  • Shared hyperscaler spending: Several chip designers can depend on the same large customers’ data-center budgets. Holding multiple tickers may not diversify that common spending-cycle exposure—the “diversification illusion” described by the Kiplinger industry overview.
  • Customer concentration and infrastructure timing: NVIDIA reports direct-customer concentration and warns that access to capital, data-center land, power, and construction capacity can delay or reduce deployments. NVIDIA Form 10-Q
  • Supply commitments and execution: Preparing capacity for expected demand can leave a company exposed if forecasts, yields, costs, or delivery timing do not work out. NVIDIA discusses these risks in its filing. NVIDIA Form 10-Q
  • Manufacturing and export controls: AMD identifies manufacturing-yield risks and describes export-control-related inventory charges, which can affect supply, costs, margins, and customer allocation. AMD Form 10-K
  • Program and business-mix dependence: AMD says semi-custom SoC revenue depends on customer projects and the success of customers’ products. Broadcom’s mix of AI-related silicon, other semiconductor markets, and infrastructure software means investors need to isolate the AI thesis from the broader business where disclosures allow. Build a comparison from filings, not from the AI label

For each stock, write down the AI-linked products and segments, the growth period and definition, customer and end-market concentration, reported margins and cash generation, and the risks to production or customer spending. Add valuation measures only when the prices, estimates, periods, and earnings definitions are aligned. That process produces a more useful comparison than ranking companies by a single growth rate or treating every AI infrastructure supplier as the same kind of business.
