A public ledger can show what a provider says it recorded; it does not, on its own, prove an audit or predict future profit.
First, identify what kind of software you are considering
“Betting software” can mean either a wagering system used to accept and settle bets or an analysis, tipping, or recordkeeping service that ranks horses or publishes selections. Those products have different purposes and oversight. A vendor’s published picks ledger is not regulatory testing of a wagering system, and licensing or testing of a wagering terminal does not verify a separate tipster’s historical performance.
- Wagering systems: Rules depend on the jurisdiction and product. Virginia’s historical horse-racing rules, for example, apply to covered licensed facilities and terminals; they address past-performance information, approved wager and payout information, financial reporting, independent testing, integrity-auditor access, and responsible-gaming measures. Virginia administrative code
- Analysis and selection services: Methodology and performance pages are generally the provider’s own account of its features and results. That information does not establish that the service is a regulated wagering system or that its record has been independently audited.
ARCI rules are model rules; their legal effect depends on adoption in the relevant jurisdiction. ARCI model rules Check the rules that apply where you live and where the product operates rather than assuming one jurisdiction’s requirements apply everywhere.
Use this checklist to assess the track record
1. Verify that picks were recorded before the race
Look for a durable, independently time-stamped record that identifies the selection, market, advised odds or price, and publication time. The price matters: a result calculated using a price that was unavailable when the tip was issued can make the record look better than a customer’s realistic outcome. Check whether the original advised price is retained or later replaced.

Algohorse says its selections are registered before the off at the price available and graded afterward. Winsmore says its selections are published and settled to Betfair Starting Price (BSP). These are useful transparency features to look for, but they remain vendor descriptions unless independently verified. Algohorse methodology Winsmore methodology
2. Check whether the record includes all outcomes
A credible ledger should make it possible to see losing selections as well as winners, losing runs, non-runners, voids, abandoned races, dead heats, and any corrections. The provider should explain which results enter each calculation and how each outcome is settled. Otherwise, a reader cannot tell whether the denominator or return figure excludes inconvenient rows.
For example, Lay Picks says its settled results—not pending rows or voids—determine the strike-rate denominator, and notes that strike rate needs liability context. That illustrates why the settlement rules and the meaning of a metric need to be read together. Lay Picks results methodology

3. Demand definitions for every performance metric
A strike rate is the share of selections that win; it does not show whether the bets made money. ROI also needs a definition: ask what stake denominator and stake sizing are used, which odds source applies, how bets are settled, and whether exchange commission or other deductions are included. Establish whether the figures come from live prospective selections, back-tests, simulations, or paper calculations—and whether they cover every signal or only a selected tier.
The UK Gambling Commission describes turnover as gross stakes before costs or winnings and reports betting profit as gross gambling yield (GGY). Those measures should not be casually treated as interchangeable with a provider’s ROI. UK Gambling Commission: industry statistics terminology
True Overlay’s disclosure is an example of limits that should accompany modelled values: it says paper arithmetic is not realized customer return and may omit availability, commission, deductions, limits, tax, voids, and execution differences. It describes its beta public performance ledger as starting at zero and being platform-controlled rather than independently proofed. True Overlay disclosures

4. Inspect the method, data, and validation
A provider can protect proprietary code while still explaining the model’s inputs, geography, time period, update cadence, selection rules, and validation approach. Without those basics, a large historical dataset or an impressive headline figure is difficult to interpret.
Algohorse describes using UK and Irish historical data, logging selections before races, automatically grading results, and using walk-forward validation—training on past data and evaluating on future seasons. It also says it does not beat the closing price but claims an advantage against the morning market. These are vendor claims, not independent findings; compare them with the provider’s public record. Winsmore describes using recent form, speed under conditions, trainer, jockey, draw, and other race-specific features, while keeping exact weights proprietary. It identifies lightly raced or unexposed horses as a weakness. A clear account of a model’s blind spots is useful when deciding whether its stated scope suits the races you follow. 5. Find out whether verification is independent—and what it covers
Ask who performed any audit, which raw records they could inspect, what sample and period were covered, whether the report applies to the software version currently offered, and whether the report is public. “Verified” is not enough detail to assess the strength or relevance of a check.
Virginia’s rules provide an example of stronger controls for covered historical-racing systems: independent laboratory testing and an integrity auditor able to extract actual data and cross-check management reports against source information. Those requirements concern specified facilities and systems; they should not be generalized to every analytics subscription or every jurisdiction. Virginia administrative code
6. Review terms, location limits, and commercial disclosures
Check the service’s terms, age and jurisdiction restrictions, responsible-gambling information, and any bookmaker or affiliate relationships. True Overlay says bookmaker links remain hidden unless relationship, campaign, jurisdiction, disclosure, and age requirements are approved, and that compensation would be shown beside an enabled affiliate link. That is an example of disclosure language, not an endorsement. True Overlay disclosures

Compare providers on the same basis
Use identical questions for every service rather than ranking products by headline ROI or strike rate alone. Record what is established and what is not; a missing figure is a gap to investigate, not a reason to assume the provider performs well or poorly.
| Comparison axis | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Pre-race record | Whether picks are timestamped before the event, and whether the original selection and price remain visible. |
| Completeness and settlement | Whether all selections and outcomes are included, with explicit rules for voids, non-runners, abandoned races, dead heats, and corrections. |
| Performance calculations | Metric definitions, stake sizing, odds source, settlement, deductions, and live-versus-simulated status. |
| Method and scope | Data, geography, update cadence, model inputs, validation method, and stated limitations. |
| Independent evidence | Who checked what records, for which period and product version, and whether the findings are public. |
| Fit and terms | Product type, applicable jurisdiction, support, age restrictions, responsible-gambling information, and price. |
How to read the named services’ public claims
The figures below are provider-reported details, not independently audited performance. They can change, so treat them as snapshots of what each page says rather than proof of profitability.
- Algohorse: Says it logs selections before the off, grades them publicly, and uses walk-forward validation. It describes a UK and Irish database containing 38 years of results, 3.8 million runner records, and more than 400,000 races. These are vendor-reported database-scale figures, not independently checked here. Algohorse methodology
- Winsmore: Says its training data covers more than 90,000 UK races and over 800,000 individual runs since 2020, with Betfair pricing data going back to 2015. It also reports more than 900 selections each month. The provider describes these figures; they are not independent measurements. Its page’s all-time figures change daily and are vendor-reported. Winsmore methodology
- Winsmore selection categories: The methodology page displayed 31/72 NAP selections, 56/179 Dual Specialist selections, and 695/2,751 Backs selections alongside strike rate and ROI when accessed in 2026. These are dated, changing vendor figures, not independently audited results; the page says they update daily. Winsmore methodology
- HRR Pro Ratings: Says its ratings refresh daily and presents a public track record, while disclaiming a promise of profitability or a particular strike rate. HRR Pro Ratings methodology
- True Overlay: Separates source data, generated analysis, market information, and demonstrated performance, and says its performance ledger is platform-controlled rather than independent proofing. True Overlay disclosures
No cross-provider controlled comparison or third-party profitability study is established by these claims. Winsmore cautions that “past performance is not a guarantee of future results”; HRR Pro Ratings says, “We don’t claim it makes you money.” Those are the providers’ statements about their own services, not evidence that any service will or will not be profitable.
