To choose securely, verify the company you would contract with, examine its custody and insolvency terms, and compare the full cost and execution of a representative transaction. No exchange is safest for every customer or jurisdiction.
Decide who will control the crypto
On a centralized exchange, the provider generally holds or arranges custody of crypto while you use its account to buy and trade. That convenience means your access depends on the provider’s security, operating procedures, and legal terms. Exchange custody is not the same as holding the private keys yourself.
Self-custody is a separate choice: you control the keys and must protect them and the recovery phrase. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance advises, “Never share your private keys, or seed phrases.” Its Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors – Investor Bulletin is staff investor education, not a rule, regulation, or Commission statement.
Start with your country and the contracting company
Eligibility and protections depend on where you live and which legal entity provides your account. Find the company named in the account agreement or customer terms, then check its status directly with the regulator relevant to your country. Do not infer that one company’s authorization, registration, or protections apply to every brand, subsidiary, product, or customer location.

Regulatory status can help you understand which rules apply, but it does not remove operational, market, or insolvency risk. In the United Kingdom, the FCA says its final rules and guidance published on 30 June 2026 apply to firms granted permission to operate under FSMA on or after 25 October 2027. Check the FCA’s current information for the firm and your circumstances rather than treating that future application date as a regime already fully in force: FCA cryptoasset regime rules.
For customers in the European Union, MiCA provisions address custody and exchange services for providers within their scope. Applicability depends on the provider’s status and applicable law; the existence of a regulation does not by itself establish that a particular customer’s assets are protected in a particular way.

Verify XRP and Bitcoin support route by route
A general mention of XRP and Bitcoin on an exchange’s asset list is not enough. Before funding an account, verify each step you need for each asset. Investor.gov likewise advises customers to check which crypto assets a custodian permits them to hold: SEC staff’s custody questions.
- Eligibility: Confirm that residents of your country can open the relevant account and use the feature you want.
- Purchase method: Check whether XRP and Bitcoin can each be bought with your intended payment method, or whether you must first deposit another currency.
- Trading pairs: Confirm the exact pairs available to you. Support for an asset does not guarantee that every pair is offered.
- Deposits: Check supported networks and instructions for incoming transfers. A network mismatch can prevent funds from arriving as intended.
- Withdrawals: Verify that you can withdraw each asset to your intended destination, which networks are supported, and any limits or restrictions.
Assess account security and custody practices
Look beyond a headline claim such as “secure” or “institutional-grade.” A useful review explains how the provider protects both account access and the crypto it holds. Investor.gov suggests asking about regulation, asset support, insurance, custody methods, reuse or commingling of assets, privacy, and fees, and recommends strong passwords and multi-factor authentication: Investor.gov custody bulletin.

- Protect your login: Use a strong, unique password and enable multi-factor authentication. Find out how the provider handles lost-device recovery and account-access changes.
- Understand key management: Look for an explanation of who can access or authorize use of private keys, and how the provider limits and monitors that access.
- Ask about storage and operations: Check what the company discloses about hot and cold storage, transaction controls, incident response, and dependence on subcontractors.
- Check whether assets may be reused: Read whether the provider can lend, pledge, reuse, or commingle customer assets, and under what terms. Do not treat a marketing statement as a substitute for the customer agreement.
For EU custody services covered by MiCA Article 75, the rules address custody agreements, security systems, fees, position records, custody policies, periodic statements, return procedures, legal and operational segregation, liability in specified circumstances, and authorized subcontract custodians. Review the actual provider terms alongside the regulation: MiCA, Article 75.
ESMA announced on 8 July 2026 that national authorities would examine custody operational resilience at a risk-based sample of authorized crypto-asset service providers from the second half of 2026 through the first half of 2027. The work covers areas including governance, key and storage management, transaction controls, incident response, smart-contract risks, and third-party dependencies. It is a supervisory exercise, not a security rating of any named exchange: ESMA custody supervisory action.

Read what happens if the exchange fails
An exchange account balance does not, by itself, tell you how assets will be treated if the provider becomes insolvent. Read the custody agreement and applicable customer terms for asset segregation, your rights to request a return, the process and timing for returning assets, the provider’s liability, and any stated limits or exclusions. Identify whether assets can be lent or commingled, since those arrangements may affect what happens when the provider cannot meet its obligations.
Do not assume that a reference to insurance means every customer balance, asset, loss, or cause of loss is covered. Check who provides the coverage, what events and assets qualify, limits, exclusions, and whether the customer is an insured beneficiary. If those details are not clear in the terms, ask the provider or treat the protection as unestablished.

For covered EU custody arrangements, MiCA Article 75 includes requirements concerning segregation, return procedures, and liability in specified circumstances. In Switzerland, FINMA’s 12 January 2026 custody announcement highlights technical and legal risks, including cross-border insolvency. FINMA says: “Among other things, it must be ensured that customers’ cryptobased assets do not form part of the custodian’s bankruptcy assets.” That statement emphasizes an issue to examine; it is not a guarantee about every provider or customer: FINMA crypto custody guidance announcement.

An advertised trading fee is only one part of what a purchase, trade, or withdrawal can cost. Compare the same representative order and intended withdrawal route across eligible providers. Record the total amount of XRP or Bitcoin you would receive for the same amount paid, and include all charges that apply to your path.
- Quoted price or spread: Compare the offered price with the market price at the time you review it; a low stated fee can be offset by a less favorable quote.
- Trading charges: Check transaction fees and, where relevant, maker/taker rates and the order type used.
- Funding costs: Include deposit or payment-method charges and any account charges that apply.
- Transfer costs: Check withdrawal fees and any asset-transfer costs for the network you intend to use.
- Execution quality: Where order-book information is available, inspect depth and the expected execution price for your order size rather than assuming the displayed last price is what you will receive.
For EU exchange services covered by MiCA, Article 77 addresses the price or pricing method, limits, and execution price; Article 76 covers trading-platform rules, resilient systems, order and trade transparency, settlement, and transparent, fair, non-discriminatory fees. Those provisions are useful context, but check the actual fees and execution terms for the service and account you can use: MiCA, Articles 76 and 77.
When self-custody may fit—and what it changes
Some people choose to withdraw crypto from an exchange and manage their own keys. That can reduce dependence on an exchange for ongoing custody, but it transfers responsibility for key security and recovery to the owner. If you lose the keys or recovery phrase, access may be permanently lost. A physical cold-wallet device is optional; buying one does not make an exchange account safer or remove the responsibilities of self-custody. Investor.gov discusses both the costs of physical devices and the responsibility involved in self-custody: Investor.gov custody bulletin.
