How to Check Whether a Crypto Token Sale or Testing Program Is Legitimate

A practical checklist for checking a token sale or testing invitation before you send funds, share information, or connect a wallet.

Do not send money, share sensitive information, or connect a wallet just because a crypto offer looks polished or has enthusiastic testimonials. Verify who is behind it, check any registration or approval claims through official sources, read what the token actually gives you, and treat pressure or unclear payment demands as reasons to stop. A testnet or beta label does not authenticate an invitation.

Is this token sale legit? Start with the issuer, not the pitch

Before following links in an ad, direct message, or social post, write down the project’s exact domain or app, any stated legal entity, and the names of its executives and promoters. Find the project’s official channels independently, then contact it through a separately verified route if you need to confirm an offer. Search the company and people named in the pitch alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” “fraud,” and “complaint,” and examine more than one result. The FTC recommends independent background checks of this kind. No search results or complaints are not proof that an offer is legitimate.

Check U.S. registration and securities claims carefully

If a U.S. offer claims SEC registration, verify that claim using Investor.gov and relevant SEC records rather than a badge, screenshot, certificate, or promoter-provided link. Investor.gov says the SEC does not issue registration certificates. It also warns that a Form D filing does not mean a person or firm is registered, licensed, or approved; a filing is not an endorsement.

Whether a token offering involves securities depends on the facts and circumstances, according to the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy in its Investor Bulletin on Initial Coin Offerings. If the offer and sale involve a security, they must be registered or conducted pursuant to an exemption. Ask which route the issuer says applies and review its documentation. That is a screening step, not a legal determination about a particular token. These registration and securities-law checks are U.S.-specific; people elsewhere need to consult the rules and regulator for their own jurisdiction.

Read what the token sale actually offers

Look for a written project plan and a clear explanation of how sale proceeds will be used. Then identify the rights—and limitations—that come with the token. Investor.gov recommends asking whether the blockchain is public, whether code has been published, and whether an independent cybersecurity audit is available.

  • What, specifically, does owning the token let you do or claim?
  • Does the issuer offer refunds? Under what stated terms?
  • Can the token be resold, and what restrictions apply?
  • Is there a public blockchain and published code?
  • Is an independent cybersecurity audit available, and what does it cover?

A white paper, published code, or audit can provide evidence to examine; none certifies that the people behind an offer are honest or that an investment will succeed.

Evaluate the pitch and payment mechanics

Pause when a promoter promises guaranteed or unusually high returns, describes an investment as low-risk, creates “act now” pressure, gives few concrete details, or leans on testimonials and social-media hype instead of independently checkable information. The FTC’s investment-scam guidance states, “There are no guaranteed returns.” The SEC’s May 29, 2024 investor alert says, “Never make investment decisions based solely on information from social media platforms or apps.”

A convincing interface is not evidence either. The SEC has warned that fraudsters can use a legitimate-looking but fake site—or a widely used app—to show apparent profits and allow a small withdrawal as bait before asking for more money. A successful small withdrawal does not prove that the platform or offer is genuine.

For a token presale, consider whether promotion is mainly designed to generate demand. The SEC has described a possible memecoin pump-and-dump tactic in which promoters tout a presale and sell before the hype ends, leaving later buyers exposed to a rapidly falling price. That warning describes a possible scheme; it does not mean every presale is fraudulent.

Compare offers without turning the checks into a score

If you are weighing several offers, compare the same evidence for each. These are screening dimensions drawn from SEC and FTC guidance, not a scoring system: passing them does not establish that a project is safe.

What to compare What to look for
Issuer and promoters Identities and official channels you can verify independently.
Regulatory claim The registration or exemption claimed, and the official source used to check it.
Token terms Use of proceeds, token rights, refunds, resale terms, and restrictions.
Technical evidence Whether code is public and an independent audit is available.
Promotion Whether the pitch relies on urgency, guaranteed returns, testimonials, or social media alone.
Access to funds Whether anyone asks for an added payment to release funds or arrange a withdrawal.

Is this testnet or testing program real?

A testnet, beta, or testing-program label does not prove who sent the invitation or that its requested actions are safe. Confirm the program through the project’s independently located official site or channel, rather than using contact details supplied only in the invitation. If you cannot establish that the project recognizes the program, or you do not understand a requested wallet action or permission, stop rather than proceed.

The SEC and FTC materials discussed here focus on investment fraud and token offerings; they do not provide a universal technical method for validating testnet invitations, wallet connections, token approvals, or signature requests. Do not treat the word “testnet,” a published audit, or an apparent project affiliation as proof that a particular wallet request is safe.

Stop if someone demands money to release funds or recover a loss

The SEC describes schemes in which fraudsters demand extra fees or taxes before allowing a withdrawal, sometimes falsely claiming that a regulator has frozen an account. A charge labeled “tax,” “unlock,” “compliance,” or “recovery” is not proof that payment will release funds. Do not send more money simply because a platform or caller says it is required. Be especially wary of anyone offering to recover crypto who asks for a private key or more crypto.

If you report a suspected investment scam or possible securities fraud, the FTC directs consumers to ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and the SEC has a complaint process. Preserve the exact web address, messages, claimed entity and promoter names, transaction details, and copies of offer documents so you can give a clear account.

What reported scam losses can—and cannot—tell you

The FTC’s 2022 Consumer Sentinel data spotlight said more than 46,000 people reported losing more than $1 billion in cryptocurrency to scams since the start of 2021. Those are consumer reports, not a measure of every loss or an independently audited total for all fraud.

In a July 2024 consumer alert, the FTC reported $4.6 billion in consumer losses to investment scams in 2023. That figure covers investment scams broadly, not cryptocurrency alone. These figures show why verification matters; they cannot establish whether any particular sale or testing invitation is genuine.
