How to Check UPI Charges Before Confirming a Payment

Before confirming a UPI payment, verify the recipient and total, inspect each separately listed charge, and pause to clarify any unfamiliar fee.

Before authorizing a UPI payment, check the recipient and the final amount on the last screen. Read any separately listed fee or convenience charge; if you cannot tell who is charging it or why, stop and ask the merchant or the app’s official support channel before entering your UPI PIN or otherwise authorizing.

Where to check before you authorize

  1. Review the recipient. Confirm that the name or merchant shown on the payment screen matches the person or business you intend to pay.
  2. Check the final amount. Compare it with the price or amount you agreed to pay. Look for any additional line item and whether it is included in the total or added to it.
  3. Read each displayed charge. Note its exact label and amount, and look for an explanation of what it covers and which party is charging it. A platform fee, convenience fee, merchant charge, and bank charge are not automatically the same thing.
  4. Pause if anything is unclear. Ask the merchant or contact the relevant app’s official help channel to clarify an unfamiliar charge before authorizing. Do not proceed simply because a fee appears on the screen.
  5. Authorize only after the details make sense. Enter your UPI PIN or otherwise confirm only when the recipient and total are what you intend.

What the law says—and what it does not settle

Section 10A of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act states: “no bank or system provider shall impose, whether directly or indirectly, any charge upon a person making or receiving a payment by using the electronic modes of payment prescribed under section 269SU of the Income-tax Act, 1961 (43 of 1961).” India Code: Payment and Settlement Systems Act

This provision is specifically about charges imposed by a bank or system provider on a person making or receiving payment through the prescribed electronic modes. It should not be expanded into a blanket conclusion about every separately named app fee, merchant checkout charge, or surcharge. The sources cited here do not establish that all such charges are governed identically, or that every UPI app and merchant uses the same fee-disclosure layout.

A Ministry of Finance answer to Lok Sabha question 4111, answered on 18 August 2025, says UPI transactions are facilitated by NPCI and refers to the 2019 section 10A provision. It provides dated government context, not an exhaustive account of every app or merchant checkout charge. Ministry of Finance answer to Lok Sabha question 4111

If the payment status is unclear

A charge check and a payment-status check are separate. If you have authorized payment but have not received confirmation within an hour, NPCI advises contacting your bank. Keep the transaction reference and use your bank’s or app’s official support channel to ask about the payment status. NPCI’s UPI FAQ
