Use Google Search Console to find the queries and pages already appearing in Google, inspect a specific search results page when you need context, and use a rank tracker when you need scheduled checks for a fixed keyword list. These methods answer different questions: Search Console reports observed Google performance, a manual search shows one context-specific results page, and a rank tracker monitors configured keywords and locations.

What an SEO keyword ranking tells you

A ranking is where a page appears in search results for a query. The terms involved are related, but not interchangeable:

  • Target keyword: The phrase you intend a page to rank for.
  • Query: The phrase someone actually entered. A page can appear for hundreds or thousands of related queries, not just its target keyword.
  • Ranking URL: The page search results show for a query. It may not be the page you intended.
  • Organic position: A page’s place among unpaid results.
  • SERP feature: A result element such as a featured snippet, local pack, image, video, or shopping result.
  • Visibility: A broader view that includes impressions, clicks, and appearances in results and features—not just position.

Choose a checking method based on what you need to know:

Goal Best method Why
Find queries already generating visibility Google Search Console It reports Google impressions, clicks, and related performance for your property.
Connect queries to pages and traffic Google Search Console You can inspect queries, landing pages, clicks, impressions, and CTR.
Inspect one search results page now Manual Google search It shows the result layout and features for one search context, but is not a consistent ranking measurement.
Monitor a fixed keyword list or competitors Rank-tracking tool It checks selected keywords under configured settings and records their history.
Measure business results Search Console plus analytics or conversion data Rankings alone do not establish leads, sales, or revenue.

Search Console’s Performance report supports analysis by queries, pages, countries, devices, search appearance, and dates. Google’s Performance report documentation describes the available metrics and dimensions.

Set up a useful ranking check

Before comparing results, define the search context. Otherwise, a change may reflect a different country or device rather than an SEO improvement.

  • Keyword or query cluster and intended landing page
  • Country, and city or service area if local visibility matters
  • Language, search engine, and device
  • Baseline date and the period you will compare
  • The outcome that matters: visibility, traffic, leads, sales, or brand exposure

A tracking sheet can make those assumptions explicit:

Keyword Target URL Country / city Device Intent Baseline date Position Clicks / impressions / CTR
Enter query Enter URL Enter location Desktop / mobile Enter intent Enter date Record with source and period Record from Search Console

Do not compare, for example, a desktop result in the United States with a mobile result in the United Kingdom and call the difference an SEO gain or loss.

Check rankings in Google Search Console

1. Open the right property and report

You need access to a verified Search Console property with data for the site and period you want to examine. Open the property, then go to Performance → Search results.

2. Turn on the performance metrics

Enable Total clicks, Total impressions, Average CTR, and Average position. They describe different parts of search performance:

  • Clicks: Visits to the site from Google Search.
  • Impressions: Times the site appeared in Google Search results.
  • CTR: Clicks divided by impressions, multiplied by 100.
  • Average position: An aggregated metric over the selected report period, not a live rank guarantee. Google defines the chart’s average position using the topmost result from the property; in table views, the metric applies to the URL or grouping shown.

See Google’s explanation of Performance report metrics for the precise definitions.

3. Find queries that matter

Open the Queries tab. Sort by impressions to find searches where the site is often visible; sort by clicks to find searches sending visits. Then examine CTR and average position alongside those counts. Export the report if you need a larger spreadsheet analysis. Google recommends considering query, click, impression, CTR, country, and device data rather than relying on position alone. Google’s Search Console guidance covers these performance views.

Use the results to identify opportunities, not as universal ranking cutoffs:

  • Positions roughly 4–10: Consider whether a more useful answer, clearer title, stronger internal links, or better topical coverage could improve the page.
  • Positions roughly 11–20: Check whether the page satisfies the query’s intent and covers the subject well enough to compete.
  • Many impressions, relatively few clicks: Investigate title and snippet alignment, search intent, SERP features, and brand trust.
  • Clicks without conversions: Review traffic quality and the landing-page journey; this is not necessarily a ranking problem.
  • Unexpected queries: Decide whether they reveal a useful content opportunity or a mismatch between the page and its intended topic.

4. Filter one query and identify its ranking page

  1. In the Queries table, select the query or apply a query filter.
  2. Review its clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position for the chosen period.
  3. Open the Pages tab to see which URL or URLs Google showed for that query.
  4. Compare the URL receiving impressions with the page you intended to rank.

Google documents this query-to-pages investigation. Checking the URL can reveal a wrong-page result, overlapping pages, a blog post appearing instead of a service page, or a URL change that needs investigation.

5. Compare a page’s performance over time

  1. Apply a URL filter for the page or page group.
  2. Select Average position along with clicks, impressions, and CTR.
  3. Choose a date range; use Compare to select a previous or equivalent period.
  4. Interpret the metrics together, and note changes made during either period.

Google’s position-history instructions describe filtering by URL, selecting Average position, setting a date range, and comparing periods. Useful comparisons include the last 28 days against the previous 28 days, the same month year over year, or a period before and after a content or technical change. Record relevant events such as a title edit, internal-link update, migration, template change, or seasonal shift so they are not mistaken for unexplained ranking movement.

6. Segment by country and device

Use the Countries and Devices tabs or report filters to see whether performance differs by geography or desktop and mobile. Search results can vary with time, place, device, and recent search history, so a result you see personally need not match a Search Console average. Google explains these contextual differences.

For local businesses, a national result is not a reliable proxy for a specific town or searcher. Proximity, mobile use, map-pack presence, language, and exact search location can matter. Use a tracker that supports the relevant city, postcode, or other local setting when that level of consistency is needed.

Inspect a keyword manually without overreading the result

A manual search is useful for understanding the current results page: which URLs appear, how competitors present their pages, and whether a featured snippet or other feature changes the opportunity to earn a click. It is a spot check, not a canonical ranking measurement.

  1. Search the exact query while logged out or in a private browser window to reduce some personalization.
  2. Set the intended search location and language as closely as possible.
  3. Check desktop and mobile separately if both audiences matter.
  4. Inspect the whole results page, including ads and SERP features, not only organic blue links.
  5. Record the query, date, location, device, and URL shown.

Private browsing does not remove every contextual difference. Google results vary by location and other factors, and repeating searches is not a sound way to build a trend. Ahrefs’ guide to checking a Google ranking also discusses why a personal search can mislead.

Track a fixed keyword list with a rank tracker

Use a rank tracker when you need scheduled observations for chosen keywords, consistent location and device settings, competitor comparisons, or reports over time. In general, setup follows this sequence:

  1. Create a project and add the domain.
  2. Enter the keywords you want to monitor and, where supported, assign target URLs.
  3. Choose the search engine, country, language, location, and device relevant to the audience.
  4. Add competitors if comparison is part of the question.
  5. Set the checking schedule and review position history, SERP features, and changes in ranking URLs.
  6. Export or schedule reports if you need to share results.

Capabilities vary by product. Ahrefs describes mobile and desktop views, position history, SERP review, and location tracking in its Rank Tracker overview and Rank Tracker product information. Semrush describes keyword monitoring, competitor domains, landing-page analysis, local tracking, and competitor discovery for a selected location on its Position Tracking page.

Search Console and rank trackers can disagree without either being broken. Search Console reports observed Google performance for your site, including queries you did not select. A tracker checks the keywords and settings you configured on its own schedule. Vendors may use different locations, devices, collection times, and SERP interpretations. Ahrefs also distinguishes manually selected Rank Tracker keywords from its broader Organic Keywords data: Ahrefs explains the difference between those reports.

Choose the right tool for the job

Method What it is best at What it does not establish Typical fit
Google Search Console First-party Google impressions, clicks, CTR, query and page relationships, and country or device analysis A universal live rank for every target keyword or a built-in equivalent to paid competitor monitoring Starting point for almost every site
Manual search Quick inspection of one results page and its features A reproducible history or context-free ranking Spot checks and SERP context
Paid rank tracker Scheduled monitoring of configured keywords, locations, devices, and competitors Traffic, conversions, revenue, or every query that can bring visibility Ongoing SEO programs, local tracking, and reporting

Search Console also offers advanced data access and bulk export options, including BigQuery export where available; see Google’s bulk data export documentation.

Most site owners can begin with Search Console and a spreadsheet. Consider paying for a tracker when the value of fixed keyword tracking, local checks, competitor visibility, or recurring reports justifies the subscription. Compare products by the locations, devices, update schedules, keyword limits, and reporting workflows you actually need rather than assuming one tool provides a definitive rank.

Turn ranking data into SEO decisions

A position change matters only in context. A high position can earn few clicks if demand is low, the query is answered directly in the results, the title misses intent, or features and ads draw attention elsewhere. A lower average position can still bring substantial traffic if a page appears for many related searches.

  • Impressions up, CTR weak: Check whether the title and snippet accurately match the query, and inspect the SERP layout.
  • Near the first page: Compare the page’s answer and usefulness with the results above it; review internal links and topical coverage before making changes.
  • Wrong URL appearing: Check intent alignment, overlapping content, internal links, canonical tags, redirects, and indexation.
  • Clicks steady despite a position shift: Look at query mix, demand, and SERP features before treating the change as a business loss.
  • Clicks falling while position appears stable: Investigate demand, CTR, title or snippet changes, seasonality, and competing results.
  • Traffic present but conversions weak: Examine qualified traffic and the landing page’s conversion path rather than chasing a higher rank alone.

Validate SEO changes using clicks, impressions, qualified visits, and conversions as appropriate. Google advises emphasizing trends in clicks and impressions rather than treating position as the only performance measure. See Google’s performance analysis guidance.

Troubleshoot common ranking discrepancies

Search Console shows no data for a query you can find

Check that you opened the correct property, including the relevant subdomain; widen the date range; and confirm you are examining the same country, device, and search type. The page may have very few impressions, appear intermittently, or rank for a close variant rather than the exact phrase you searched.

Search Console reports position 1, but you cannot find the page

Average position is historical and aggregated over the selected period. The topmost result may have come from another URL on the property, or visibility may have occurred in a different device, location, or result context. Filter to the query and inspect the Pages tab before concluding the report is wrong; Google documents that workflow here.

The wrong page ranks for the query

First decide whether the page Google selected actually satisfies the query better. If not, review search intent, overlapping or duplicate content, internal links, canonical tags, redirects, indexation, relevance, and external links. The issue may be how the site maps its pages to search intent rather than an absence of visibility.

A tracker reports a ranking but analytics shows no visits

A position is an opportunity to receive a click, not evidence that a click occurred. Check Search Console clicks for the matching query and period, then investigate analytics attribution and the landing-page experience.
