Before comparing prices, confirm the RAM or SSD your computer supports. Then compare equivalent parts, check their price history, and verify the retailer’s live price and purchase terms near checkout. A low price is useful only if the component fits and the listing is comparable.
1. Confirm what your computer supports
Start with your computer’s model and manufacturer specifications, or the motherboard documentation for a desktop build. Identify the supported part before shopping: compatibility can rule out an otherwise attractive offer.
For RAM
- Check the memory generation, such as DDR4 or DDR5, and the module type required by the computer.
- Confirm the capacity the system supports and how many slots are available.
- Check supported speed and any relevant limits; a kit’s advertised speed does not by itself establish that your system can use it at that speed.
Kingston recommends checking manufacturer memory configurators and compatibility guarantees where available. Its memory guide also recommends comparing equivalent modules rather than choosing by headline price alone.
For SSDs
- Identify the supported interface, such as NVMe or SATA.
- Confirm the physical form factor and whether your PC has a compatible slot or drive bay.
- Compare like with like: an NVMe drive is not automatically a substitute for a SATA drive, or vice versa.
Price indexes separate SSDs into NVMe and SATA categories, but only your computer’s specifications can establish which type will work in your system.

2. Compare equivalent products
Once you know the compatible category, compare parts with the same capacity and the specifications that matter to your system. For RAM, compare generation, module type, speed, and relevant timings. For SSDs, compare interface, form factor, capacity, and other model specifications. A different product may be cheaper for a reason, so do not treat two listings as interchangeable just because both say “RAM” or “SSD.”
Price per gigabyte is a helpful screening measure when capacities differ. MemRadar displays RAM price per GB and says capacity is the fairest basis for comparing different-sized parts. Use that figure within the same segment: it does not account for generation, speed, timings, interface, or compatibility.

3. Add price history to the comparison
A current price is a snapshot. Check the product’s history or a dated index to see whether the offer is low relative to its recent pattern, then check the retailer listing again near checkout. Kingston Technology puts it plainly in The Ultimate Memory Guide, under “When Buying Memory”: “The best rule of thumb is to compare memory prices close to your time of purchase.” Kingston notes that memory prices can be affected by demand, DRAM manufacturing levels, marketplace inventory, time of year, new operating-system releases, and computer sales.
What MemRadar can show
MemRadar’s RAM tracker covers RAM and SSD products and displays RAM price per GB. Its index reports medians across its tracked products; the publisher says Amazon history is licensed from Keepa and Newegg prices come from an official Rakuten Advertising product feed. Its catalog and cohort sizes can change, so the index is a view of that tracked set, not a complete census of every retailer or product.

What RamList can show
RamList provides daily-updated category indexes. It says its calculations use the cheapest available price among tracked retailers and exclude Amazon. That is a different product set and method from MemRadar’s median-based index, so the figures are not directly interchangeable.
Neither tracker establishes whether a particular part fits your computer or whether a specific retailer listing is still available at the displayed price. Use the history as context, not as a substitute for checking the actual product and live offer.

4. Read dated index figures in context
MemRadar’s index, last computed October 3, 2026, covered 235 tracked RAM and SSD products. Its reported DDR5 result was a 327.9% year-over-year price increase. These are MemRadar’s tracked-segment figures, not a universal market census; the publisher reports medians across a changing catalog and varying cohort sizes for longer windows.
MemRadar also reported these September 2026 baskets:
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
| Basket | Reported amount | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| 32GB DDR5-6000 kit, 1TB NVMe SSD, and 2TB NVMe SSD | $1,066 | MemRadar’s stated basket of regular Amazon listing prices, not deals. |
| 32GB DDR4-3200 kit and 1TB NVMe SSD | $410 | MemRadar’s comparison basket for a DDR4 board. |
These baskets can illustrate how a defined set of parts changed in price; they are not a quote for the upgrade your computer needs. Product choice, compatibility, and live listings determine your own cost.
5. Check the terms before buying
Compare the full purchase conditions, not just the headline amount. Kingston identifies warranty, support, returns, memory configurators, and compatibility guarantees as relevant considerations when buying memory. For a specific model, confirm the current retailer listing and manufacturer documentation.
- Is the listing for the exact model and capacity you compared?
- Does the stated interface, form factor, generation, and speed match your computer’s requirements?
- What warranty and support does the manufacturer offer?
- What are the retailer’s return conditions if the part is incompatible or defective?
- Is the displayed price still available at checkout?
A model-specific recommendation requires your computer model and its supported memory or storage specifications; tracker examples and index baskets cannot determine that for you.
