How to Change Kindle Bluetooth and Accessibility Settings for Page-Turning

Kindle Bluetooth supports compatible audio devices, not typical Bluetooth page-turner clickers. Learn VoiceView gestures, app accessibility settings, and what to check in a clip-and-remote accessory.

Kindle e-reader Bluetooth settings are for supported audio devices, such as headphones used with VoiceView or audiobooks—not for pairing a typical Bluetooth page-turner that sends key presses. If you want hands-free page turning, VoiceView offers gesture and continuous-reading options; some third-party kits instead use a screen-contact clip controlled by a separate RF remote. The right steps depend on whether you have a Kindle e-reader or the Kindle app on a phone or tablet.

Pair a Bluetooth audio device with a Kindle e-reader

Amazon’s Bluetooth pairing instructions apply to compatible audio devices. Amazon says Bluetooth connectivity is supported on Kindle devices released in or after 2016; support can still vary by model and accessory.

  1. Put your headphones or other audio device into pairing mode and keep it near the Kindle.
  2. On the Kindle, open Quick Actions or the Menu icon, then choose All Settings or Settings.
  3. Choose Wi-Fi & Bluetooth or Wireless, turn Bluetooth on, and open Bluetooth Devices to scan.
  4. Select the audio device and choose Connect. If prompted for a PIN, select CONFIRM, then YES.

To remove a paired device, choose Forget beside its name. Amazon’s complete instructions are at Kindle Bluetooth pairing help.

If pairing fails

  • Temporarily switch off other nearby Bluetooth devices and accessories.
  • Check that the audio device can connect to another device.
  • Update the Kindle software, then restart both devices.
  • If needed, Amazon lists factory-resetting the Kindle and Bluetooth device as a further troubleshooting step.

These are troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that every audio device will work.

Use VoiceView for spoken reading and navigation

VoiceView is the screen reader on supported Kindle e-readers. It reads content through a compatible Bluetooth audio device, and can turn pages automatically while reading aloud. For the full gesture guide, see Amazon’s VoiceView gestures.

  • Next page: swipe left with two fingers.
  • Previous page: swipe right with two fingers.
  • Pause or resume VoiceView: tap with two fingers.
  • Restart continuous reading: swipe down and right with one finger in an L shape.

Amazon also documents a VoiceView shortcut: press the Kindle power button three times to search for a new Bluetooth audio device, then hold two fingers on the screen to select it. The same triple press can reconnect a previously paired audio device when VoiceView has been turned off or the Kindle has been in Airplane mode. Amazon lists VoiceView Bluetooth support for English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish; confirm support for your specific Kindle and locale.

Change reading and accessibility settings in the Kindle app

Kindle apps on Android and iOS have their own reading controls; these are separate from an e-reader’s Bluetooth and VoiceView menus. Open a book, tap near the top center of the screen, open the Aa reading-settings menu, and select the relevant tab.

Depending on the platform and book, available options can include font size and type, line and word spacing, brightness, page color, dark mode, continuous scrolling, margins, text alignment, themes, Assistive Reader, real-time text highlighting, and Reading Ruler. Word Wise is listed for Android. Options vary by device, platform, and book. Amazon describes the app controls at Kindle reading accessibility settings.

Screen readers on iPhone and Android

The Kindle iOS app uses Apple VoiceOver, which you enable in the iPhone or iPad’s Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver. With VoiceOver active, Amazon lists a three-finger swipe left or right to move to the next or previous page. See Amazon’s Kindle iOS VoiceOver guidance.

Kindle for Android supports Google TalkBack, which you enable in the Android device’s Accessibility settings. These are phone or tablet accessibility controls, not Kindle e-reader VoiceView settings.

Can a Bluetooth page-turner control a Kindle?

Amazon’s current Bluetooth pairing instructions do not support pairing Bluetooth phones, keyboards, or mice with Kindle e-readers. A common Bluetooth clicker that sends key presses therefore should not be treated as a supported direct Kindle page-turner. In a 2022 Kindle Paperwhite remote-control discussion, Amazon staff member Nick J. Penrose said, “No, this is not an available feature.” That answer concerned a built-in direct remote feature, not every third-party accessory method; the same response mentioned a clip-on device. See the Amazon staff response.

How a clip-and-remote page-turner works

One documented third-party design uses a screen sensor clip placed against the Kindle display and a separate RF remote. The remote operates the clip; the clip is not paired to Kindle over Bluetooth. The manufacturer manual for this particular design says, “Please note that our product does not have Bluetooth function and does not need to be connected to your device through Bluetooth. No Bluetooth! No wifi!” This describes that product, not all page-turner accessories. See the manufacturer’s manual.

The manual also warns that some Kindle models are incompatible, requires the clip to contact the screen appropriately, and describes automatic shutdown after 30 minutes without use. Those details are specific to that design, not universal features of page-turners.

Check these details before buying

  • Confirm the compatibility list names your exact Kindle model and generation.
  • Check where the sensor contacts the display and whether the clip blocks text, controls, or your preferred grip.
  • Review charging requirements and how the remote pairs with its clip.
  • Look for the accessory’s behavior after inactivity and any setup or placement limitations.

Choose the method that fits your reading

Method How it turns pages What to verify
VoiceView on a supported Kindle e-reader Reads aloud and turns pages automatically; two-finger swipes also navigate. Kindle model, compatible Bluetooth audio device, and language availability.
Bluetooth clicker or keyboard Would send input directly to the Kindle. Amazon’s documented pairing support does not cover Bluetooth phones, keyboards, or mice.
Third-party sensor clip and RF remote A screen-contact clip is operated by a separate remote; it does not connect to Kindle through Bluetooth. Exact model compatibility, clip placement, visibility, charging, and product-specific behavior.

If you read on a phone or tablet rather than a Kindle e-reader, use the Kindle app’s Aa settings and the device’s VoiceOver or TalkBack features; those controls are distinct from e-reader Bluetooth pairing.
