For example, at a hypothetical rate of $60,000 per BTC, 0.002 BTC is about $120 before fees. Your actual debit may also include a network fee and any wallet, exchange, or payment-provider charge, so check the final confirmation screen before sending.
Calculate the payment amount
First identify whether the amount on the invoice or in your wallet is denominated in BTC or dollars. Use the BTC/USD rate shown for that specific payment, and note when the quote was provided.
- BTC amount to dollars: BTC amount × BTC/USD rate = approximate dollar value.
- Dollar invoice to BTC: dollar amount ÷ BTC/USD rate = approximate BTC amount due.
For example, at a hypothetical rate of $60,000 per BTC, a $120 invoice converts to 0.002 BTC. This is an illustration, not a current exchange rate. Bitcoin’s developer guide explains that fiat-priced orders can be converted into satoshis and that the exchange-rate input should reflect current market value: Bitcoin Developer Guide: Payment Processing.
Check the quote and invoice before paying
BTC/USD changes over time, so a dollar estimate is not a guarantee of the value at the moment a payment is confirmed. Use the rate attached to the merchant’s invoice or shown by the wallet for that payment; avoid calculating from one provider’s rate and paying against another provider’s quote unless you understand the difference.
#1 Best Overall
Check the invoice’s BTC amount, payment method, and expiration time. The Bitcoin Developer Guide says many payment processors expire fiat-pegged invoices after 10–20 minutes. That is reported practice, not a universal deadline; follow the expiry displayed on your own invoice: Bitcoin Developer Guide: Payment Processing.
Separate payment value from fees and total debit
The amount sent to the recipient and the amount deducted from your wallet may differ. Bitcoin’s transaction output amount is specified in BTC, while the transaction fee is separate: Bitcoin Core send reference.

- Payment value: the requested BTC amount converted using the selected BTC/USD rate.
- Network fee: a fee for including the transaction in a block. It depends on transaction data size and demand for block space, not simply on the dollar value being sent. Bitcoin.org notes that transaction inputs and outputs affect size; two payments of different values can have the same fee if their transactions are the same size. One BTC is 100,000,000 satoshis. Bitcoin.org: Bitcoin transaction fees
- Provider or conversion charge: a wallet, exchange, or payment service may add a charge or build a spread into its quoted rate. There is no universal amount; check that provider’s terms and confirmation screen.
Wallet fee estimates are predictions and can change as block-space demand changes. Bitcoin.org says wallets commonly let users review the fee before sending: Bitcoin.org: Bitcoin transaction fees. The final debit also depends on wallet behavior: some wallets add the fee to the payment, while others may subtract it from the amount sent. Read the wallet’s displayed breakdown to confirm what the recipient will receive and what your balance will lose.

Use the payment method specified by the recipient’s invoice. On-chain Bitcoin and Lightning are not interchangeable destinations: the wallet and recipient must support the same method. Bitcoin.org describes Lightning as near-instant and low-fee for small or frequent payments, but the fee and speed for a particular payment depend on the wallet and route. Compare the options shown in your wallet rather than assuming a quoted general characteristic applies to your transaction: Bitcoin.org FAQ: Lightning Network.

- Check the BTC/USD quote and its timestamp; use the rate tied to the payment.
- Verify the invoice amount, required payment method, and expiry.
- Review the wallet’s BTC amount, network fee, provider charges, and total debit.
- Confirm whether the fee is added to your debit or deducted from the recipient’s payment, then approve only if the recipient amount and total are as expected.
