To buy Litecoin (LTC), use a provider that supports purchases in your location, compare the final price and fees for your chosen payment method, and confirm the order. If you want to hold LTC yourself, withdraw it to a wallet that explicitly supports Litecoin—after checking the network, destination address, withdrawal fee, and any account hold. Buying and withdrawing are separate steps, and a confirmed on-chain transfer cannot be reversed.
Choose a way to buy Litecoin
Your main options include centralized exchanges, decentralized exchanges, and peer-to-peer services. The Litecoin Foundation’s buying page lists examples such as Coinbase, Gemini, Kraken, and Binance, as well as BasicSwap and LocalCoinSwap, and links to a MoonPay purchase widget. These are directory examples, not endorsements or guarantees that a service is available or suitable where you live. Check that the provider supports both LTC purchases and withdrawals in your jurisdiction.
Centralized exchange
A centralized exchange usually requires an account and identity verification. Its funding methods, verification requirements, available assets, and withdrawal rules vary by provider and location.
Decentralized or peer-to-peer service
These routes differ from buying through an account-based centralized exchange. Before sending money, understand who the counterparty is, how payment works, whether escrow is involved, and who controls the funds at each stage. A service directory alone does not establish what protections a particular transaction provides.

Compare the full purchase cost
Do not compare providers using only an advertised trading fee. For example, Kraken’s Instant Buy documentation says the charge can include a displayed fee and, where applicable, a spread reflected in the price. Kraken says the spread is calculated before execution and can vary with transaction size, asset, payment method, and market conditions. Other providers may calculate or display costs differently.
To make a useful comparison, request a quote for the same LTC amount, payment method, and approximate time, then compare the amount of LTC you would receive and the total amount charged. If you plan to withdraw, also check the separate withdrawal fee. The available provider information does not establish a universal cheapest exchange.

Buy LTC: a typical exchange flow
The exact screens differ by platform. Kraken’s buying guide describes a typical sequence; the payment methods and options it lists are not available to every customer or in every location.
- Open and verify an account. Complete the provider’s identity checks and confirm that your account can access LTC and the intended payment method.
- Choose how to fund the purchase. Review the deposit or payment conditions before sending money. A guide may list methods such as bank wire, ACH, or card, but availability can depend on your region and verification tier.
- Select Litecoin. On Kraken, the guide describes using “Buy Crypto” and selecting Litecoin. Other platforms may use different labels.
- Enter an amount and review the preview. Check the displayed price, fees, any included spread, and the amount of LTC you will receive.
- Confirm only if the terms suit you. After purchase, decide whether to leave the LTC with the provider or withdraw it to a compatible wallet.
Decide where to hold your LTC
If you leave LTC on an exchange, the provider holds it on your behalf. With self-custody, you use a wallet compatible with Litecoin and take responsibility for access and recovery. Kraken’s guide says purchased LTC can be withdrawn to a compatible hot or cold wallet. Confirm native Litecoin support for the exact wallet or device; support for another asset or a similarly named network is not enough.

A Litecoin wallet uses a public/private key pair: the receiving address is public-facing, while the private key authorizes spending. A disclosure in the SEC-filed Litecoin trust report for the period ended June 30, 2026 warns that losing a private key without a backup can permanently eliminate access. Keep recovery information private and securely backed up. Never give a seed phrase or private key to someone claiming to provide support.
Withdraw LTC to a wallet
There is no single withdrawal screen or guaranteed completion time across providers. Follow the instructions shown by your exchange and wallet, and check every detail before authorizing the transaction.

- Prepare the receiving wallet. Confirm that it supports Litecoin and copy its Litecoin receiving address using the wallet’s instructions.
- Open the exchange’s LTC withdrawal flow. Select Litecoin and, if prompted, choose the Litecoin network—not a different network with a similar label.
- Enter the receiving address. Compare the address shown by the exchange with the one displayed by your wallet. A wrong destination can mean permanent loss.
- Review the fee and any hold. Check the withdrawal amount, fee, and any stated processing delay before approval.
- Consider a small test transfer. When practical and economically sensible, send a small amount first and verify that it arrives at the intended wallet before transferring the remainder.
- Approve and monitor the transfer. Use the exchange and wallet’s status information. Once confirmed on-chain, a Litecoin transfer is irreversible, according to the SEC-filed disclosure.
Check for a withdrawal hold
Kraken says some card or digital-wallet purchases may have a withdrawal hold of up to 72 hours. It also says certain bank deposits or security reasons can trigger holds. This is a Kraken-specific policy example, not a rule for every exchange; check the current account screen and provider guidance before buying if prompt withdrawal matters.

Cryptocurrency prices and access carry material risks. The CFTC advises customers to use caution and conduct extensive research before purchasing digital coins or tokens. It identifies liquidity, technology changes, competing uses, theft, and fraud among relevant risks and says that buying solely in the hope of selling later at a higher price is speculation. As the CFTC puts it: “There is no such thing as a guaranteed investment or trading strategy.”

A 2026 SEC-filed Litecoin trust disclosure describes Litecoin as a proof-of-work network, with an approximately 2.5-minute block generation time and an 84 million LTC supply cap. Those are network background figures, not a promise about how quickly your transaction will confirm, a withdrawal-fee estimate, or a forecast of Litecoin’s value.
