You can buy China Construction Bank (CCB) shares through a securities intermediary that serves your jurisdiction and offers access to the listing you want: Hong Kong H-shares (ticker 939) or Shanghai A-shares (ticker 601939). Before placing an order, confirm the share class, market access, trading unit, settlement currency, fees and order status with your intermediary. Access to Shanghai shares through Northbound Stock Connect has additional eligibility and trading restrictions, and an order submitted to a provider is not necessarily executed.
Which China Construction Bank shares can you buy?
CCB has two ordinary-share listings. Its investor FAQ identifies H-shares under ticker 939 on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange Main Board and A-shares under ticker 601939 on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The listings are different share classes traded on different markets; do not assume that a search result showing “China Construction Bank” is the class or venue you intend to trade.
| Item | Hong Kong H-shares | Shanghai A-shares |
|---|---|---|
| CCB ticker and venue | 939, Hong Kong Stock Exchange Main Board | 601939, Shanghai Stock Exchange |
| Board lot listed by CCB | 1,000 shares | 100 shares |
| Access | An intermediary with Hong Kong market access | Direct access or a Stock Connect route, depending on the investor, intermediary and eligibility |
| Currency and settlement | Confirm share and settlement currencies and conversion charges with the intermediary | CCB (Asia)’s described Northbound service settles in RMB; confirm the terms of your own route |
| What the listing alone tells you | It does not establish which class is a better investment. Currency, liquidity, access and trading rules may differ. | |
These board-lot figures come from CCB’s investor FAQ. A board lot is a standard trading unit, not a promise that every intermediary will accept only orders in that unit or that its rules have not changed. Check the live order-entry rules before trading. Do not compare the two classes’ quoted prices as though they were interchangeable: the currencies, market mechanics, access and investor eligibility can differ. No current price or valuation comparison is established here.
How to buy CCB shares
- Choose the listing. Decide whether you mean Hong Kong H-shares 939 or Shanghai A-shares 601939. Confirm the ticker and exchange in your order screen before proceeding.
- Confirm you can use the route. Check that the intermediary is permitted to serve you where you live and supports the selected market. For a Northbound Stock Connect route, ask the actual provider about security eligibility, account activation and any required securities or RMB settlement accounts. CCB (Asia)’s service terms are provider-specific and do not describe every broker’s requirements.
- Check lot, order and fee rules. CCB lists board lots of 1,000 H-shares and 100 A-shares. CCB (Asia)’s Northbound service describes limit orders and 100-share lots, with buy orders placed in lot sizes. Confirm current order types, odd-lot handling, charges and levies with the executing intermediary.
- Arrange settlement funds. CCB (Asia)’s Northbound service settles in RMB. Confirm the currency used for your chosen listing and route, how conversion works, and what conversion and transaction charges apply. The provider directs customers to its latest fee schedule.
- Submit and monitor the order. Check its status with the intermediary. A submitted or received instruction may be rejected, suspended, partially filled or left unexecuted; intermediary receipt does not prove exchange acceptance or a completed trade.
- Review current company disclosures. Read CCB’s latest results and risk disclosures, paying attention to earnings, net interest margin, asset quality, provisions and capital. Historical reported figures are evidence about a specific period, not a forecast.
CCB (Asia)’s Northbound Stock Connect service page describes one provider’s access, account and order conditions. Use it to understand that route’s stated terms, not as a substitute for the rules of your own intermediary or for checking current exchange requirements.

What Northbound Stock Connect can restrict
Northbound Stock Connect can provide a route to eligible Shanghai-listed shares for some investors through participating intermediaries, but availability is conditional. The CCB (Asia) page describes restrictions tied to the eligible-stock list, daily quota, market calendars, order requirements and foreign-shareholding limits. Differing market and bank holidays can also make a route unavailable even when one market is open.
The provider page states that further buys are stopped when aggregate foreign ownership reaches 28% and may resume after it falls to 26%; it also describes a 30% aggregate cap and a 10% single-investor cap under the rules it presents. These are date-sensitive limits as stated by the provider, not a guarantee of current eligibility. Verify the applicable rules before acting. Quota exhaustion or a change in eligibility can prevent purchases, and an order accepted by a bank is not assured of exchange execution.

Risks to assess before investing
Share-price and issuer risk
The share price can fall, and you can lose some or all of the money invested. CCB (Asia)’s investor warning says: “Investment involves risks. The prices of securities fluctuate, sometimes dramatically. The price of a security may move up or down, and may become valueless.” Reported profits, dividends or capital ratios do not assure a future return.
Credit and asset-quality risk
As a bank, CCB’s results and capital can be affected when borrowers fail to repay, collateral values weaken, economic conditions deteriorate, or impaired lending requires higher provisions. A reported non-performing-loan (NPL) ratio covers a defined measure of impaired loans; it does not capture every sign of loan stress or establish future losses. When reviewing results, consider loan composition, sector and geographic concentrations, overdue and special-mention loans, provisioning and the bank’s discussion of capital.

Interest-rate and earnings risk
Changes in market rates and in the timing of loan and deposit repricing can change net interest income and margins. CCB reported a net interest margin of 1.37% for the first half of 2026. Compare it with other periods using the bank’s own methodology and reporting, rather than treating the figure as a prediction of future earnings.
Currency and convertibility risk
If your home currency is not RMB, exchange-rate movements can raise or reduce the home-currency value of an RMB-denominated investment. CCB (Asia) warns that RMB convertibility and exchange controls can matter and that onshore and offshore RMB markets may have separate rates and liquidity. Confirm the share denomination, settlement currency, conversion process and charges for your specific route.

Execution, liquidity and settlement risk
A limit order may not execute at your chosen price, and partial fills or small odd-lot sales can leave proceeds too low to cover fixed transaction fees. Market calendars and settlement arrangements may disrupt a trading route, while online outages, delays or transmission failures can affect instructions or execution prices. Check order status and the intermediary’s procedures rather than assuming a submitted instruction has completed.
Borrowing and forced-sale risk
Buying with margin magnifies losses. CCB (Asia) warns that losses may exceed collateral, that an investor may be required to add margin or pay interest at short notice, and that securities may be liquidated if requirements are not met. Borrowing is not necessary to buy these shares and should not be treated as a routine way to afford them.

Intermediary and compensation risk
CCB (Asia)’s disclosure says Hong Kong’s Investor Compensation Fund regime was expanded from 1 January 2020 to cover specified Northbound Stock Connect transactions routed through Hong Kong intermediaries. That is not protection against a fall in CCB’s share price or a guarantee of investment value. Confirm current scheme scope, limits and eligibility with the relevant regulator and intermediary.

For the six months ended 30 June 2026, CCB’s interim results announcement reported operating income of RMB 426.333 billion, up 10.48% year on year, and net profit of RMB 171.677 billion, up 5.56%. It reported an NPL ratio of 1.29%, down 0.02 percentage points from 31 December 2025, and an allowance-to-NPL ratio of 238.69%, up 5.54 percentage points from that date. CCB said the allowance ratio ensured “sufficient risk coverage.”
At 30 June 2026, CCB reported a total capital adequacy ratio of 19.42%, Tier 1 capital ratio of 15.15%, and Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio of 14.24%. The 2026 Half-Year Report says these ratios were calculated under the Rules on Capital Management of Commercial Banks. Capital ratios use regulatory definitions and risk-weighted denominators; read them in that framework and alongside the report’s notes, not as stand-alone safety guarantees.
All these figures are issuer-reported measures for stated dates and periods, not an independent assessment of credit quality or a forecast of returns. A lower NPL ratio or higher allowance coverage, considered alone, does not prove that lending risk is low.
