In the U.S., you buy a spot Bitcoin exchange-traded product by purchasing its shares through a brokerage account—not by buying Bitcoin for a wallet. Before placing an order, verify that the product holds Bitcoin rather than futures, read its current prospectus, and check its fees, trading spread, account eligibility, and risks.

What you buy when you purchase a spot Bitcoin ETP

A spot Bitcoin ETP holds Bitcoin and issues exchange-traded shares designed to track Bitcoin’s price, minus expenses and liabilities. Buying shares gives you indirect price exposure; it does not give you Bitcoin that you can spend or transfer from a wallet. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes these spot products as exchange-traded commodity trusts, not investment companies registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940—even when an issuer or the public calls them ETFs. SEC investor bulletin, September 9, 2024.

The SEC approved exchange rule filings for listing and trading a number of spot Bitcoin ETP shares on January 10, 2024. That approval concerned listing and trading rules; it was not an endorsement of Bitcoin or a finding that these investments suit every investor. In July 2025, the SEC approved orders permitting in-kind creation and redemption for crypto ETP shares. Those mechanisms involve authorized participants; retail investors ordinarily trade already-issued shares through a broker. SEC approval announcement; SEC in-kind approval announcement, July 29, 2025.

How to buy shares through a brokerage account

  1. Find the specific product. Use the issuer’s current prospectus and product disclosures to confirm that it is a spot Bitcoin product, not a futures fund, leveraged product, or another strategy. Check the ticker and the exchange where it trades.
  2. Compare costs and trading conditions. Review the sponsor’s expense ratio and any fee waiver and expiration date, your brokerage’s commissions or account charges, and the bid-ask spread. Check the share price against net asset value (NAV) and look at historical premiums or discounts. Read about custody arrangements and any account eligibility rules. The SEC’s ETF investor bulletin explains why fund disclosures, fees, market price, NAV, premiums or discounts, holdings, and bid-ask spread matter.
  3. Choose an eligible brokerage account. Confirm that your broker allows trading in the particular product and that your account meets its requirements. Availability and account screens differ by brokerage. At Fidelity, for example, orders for FBTC and similar spot crypto ETPs require a Designated Investments Agreement, and the account’s investment objective must be “Most Aggressive.” Those are Fidelity-specific conditions, not universal requirements. Fidelity FBTC information.
  4. Enter the ticker and order details. In your brokerage’s trade ticket, select the account, enter the verified symbol, and choose to buy. Enter the number of shares or a dollar amount if the broker offers that option, then select an order type and time-in-force where available. Fidelity’s trade guide illustrates this general securities-order flow; other brokers may use different labels or screens.
  5. Review and submit. Check the estimated price, order quantity, order instructions, and any displayed charges before placing the order. Confirm afterward that the order was accepted, filled, or remains open.

Market or limit order?

A market order prioritizes execution at the next available price, but it does not guarantee that price. A limit order sets the highest price you are willing to pay, but it may not execute if the market does not reach your limit. Review the order type and time-in-force in your broker’s ticket before submitting. Fidelity trading guide, March 2, 2026.

What to check before investing

Fees and tracking

The expense ratio is only one cost to consider: brokerage charges and the bid-ask spread can also affect what you pay. A trust’s expenses are paid from its assets, so the amount of Bitcoin represented by its shares can decline over time. Shares are intended to track Bitcoin, but they may not match its price exactly; fees, rebalancing costs or delays, and market conditions can contribute to differences. Fidelity spot Bitcoin ETP explainer, September 10, 2026.

For a dated, issuer-specific example, Fidelity stated an expense ratio of 0.25% for FBTC as of August 1, 2024. That figure is not a current category-wide comparison; check the latest prospectus and fee disclosures for any product you are considering. Fidelity FBTC information.

Price, market hours, and volatility

Bitcoin trades continuously, while ETP shares trade during exchange hours. That means you cannot trade the ETP during periods when Bitcoin is moving outside traditional securities-market hours. The share price can also diverge from Bitcoin’s value because of supply and demand, issuer events, or broader market events; compare the market price with NAV and review premium-or-discount information. Fidelity spot Bitcoin ETP explainer, September 10, 2026; SEC ETF investor bulletin.

The SEC calls Bitcoin highly speculative and warns that investors can lose money. It also identifies fraud and manipulation risks in underlying crypto markets. Consider the particular product’s prospectus and whether the possibility of substantial loss fits your circumstances. SEC investor bulletin, September 9, 2024.

U.S. scope and account-specific rules

This explanation uses U.S. regulator guidance and U.S. brokerage examples. Product access, account eligibility, and tax treatment can differ by country and account type. A broker’s permission to trade a product is not evidence that it is suitable for you; check the product disclosures and the rules that apply to your account before investing.
