To avoid bank fees, check the current fee schedule for your exact account, learn what waives its monthly charge, and keep routine spending in the account designed for it. Savings withdrawal limits, overdraft settings, and “free” account terms can all affect what you pay. The rules vary by institution, so verify the latest account agreement and fee schedule before changing how you use an account.

Why am I being charged a monthly maintenance fee?

A monthly maintenance fee is a recurring charge attached to some checking or savings accounts. Banks and credit unions set account-specific rules for avoiding it: common examples include maintaining a qualifying balance or receiving a qualifying direct deposit. Student, senior, or other account types may have different terms.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says institutions must disclose fees and how to avoid them; it also says customers should receive written notice when fee amounts or types change. Read the current fee schedule and ask the institution which conditions apply to your account. If the fee keeps recurring and the waiver is impractical, compare other banks or credit unions with low or no monthly maintenance fees. CFPB: monthly maintenance fees

Why am I being charged for transactions in my savings account?

Your savings account may limit certain withdrawals or transfers, or charge when you exceed its limits. The exact rules and fees depend on the institution and account, so check the current terms rather than assuming every savings account has the same allowance.

The CFPB recommends using savings to hold money for emergencies and infrequent purchases, and using checking for routine transactions and cash withdrawals when that better fits the account’s limits. CFPB: savings-account transaction fees

Can I avoid overdraft fees by changing my settings?

For ATM withdrawals and one-time debit-card purchases, an institution generally must obtain your affirmative consent before charging an overdraft-service fee for paying a transaction that overdraws your account. You can change your opt-in decision with the institution. If you decline coverage, the transaction may be declined instead of paid.

This opt-in protection does not apply in the same way to checks, recurring debit transactions, or ACH transactions. Those transactions may still be paid into overdraft and may carry fees under the account’s terms. The CFPB’s guidance says many banks and credit unions charge $30 or more per overdraft transaction; that is not a representative average or a prediction of your account’s fee. Other coverage options have different costs. A transfer from linked savings may incur a transfer fee; an overdraft line of credit may involve interest or other charges. Compare the terms and what happens when funds are insufficient before choosing coverage.

What practical steps help prevent overdrafts?

  • Turn on low-balance alerts through your bank or credit union.
  • Track your available balance, scheduled payments, and when deposits will be available—not just the balance you last saw.
  • Review the overdraft setting directly with the institution and confirm how ATM, one-time debit, recurring, check, and ACH transactions are handled.
  • Ask about fees, transfer timing, and interest for linked-account or credit-line coverage.

These steps can reduce the chance of an overdraft, but they cannot guarantee that every transaction will clear without a charge. CFPB: overdraft options

What does “free checking” or “no cost” actually mean?

An account advertised as “free” or “no cost” is not necessarily free for every service or situation. CFPB guidance says certain monthly and transaction fees are prohibited for accounts advertised this way, but other charges may still apply, including ATM, overdraft, bounced-check, dormant-account, or check-printing fees. Check the account’s disclosures to see which charges remain possible. CFPB: accounts advertised as free or no cost

How should I compare accounts before switching?

Compare the same terms for each account, using the current fee schedule and account agreement. A low monthly charge may not be the least costly choice if its waiver is hard to meet or other fees fit your habits poorly.

What to compare What to verify
Monthly maintenance Charge amount and the exact balance, deposit, age, or account-type conditions that waive it.
Savings use Withdrawal or transfer limits and any excess-use charge.
ATM use Fees for using the institution’s ATMs and other networks.
Overdraft and returned payments Terms by transaction type, including ATM, one-time debit, recurring debit, checks, and ACH; check overdraft and NSF charges.
Coverage alternatives How linked-account transfers or credit-line coverage work, including transfer charges and interest.
Alerts Whether low-balance and transaction alerts are available and how to enable them.

There is no universally cheapest account based on these terms alone: charges, waiver conditions, and features vary by institution and account. If charges keep recurring, compare alternatives and confirm their current terms before moving your money.
