Choose one or two skills the job actually calls for, prove them with a specific example, and explain how you would use them in the role. A focused answer shows both what you can do and why it matters to this employer.

What the interviewer wants to hear

“What skills can you bring to the job?” is a question about fit and contribution. The interviewer is looking for evidence that your strengths match the role’s requirements—not a complete inventory of everything you have learned.

Read the job description for skills and responsibilities the employer emphasizes. Then connect one or two of those needs to something you have actually done. Both Indeed and the University of Western Australia advise candidates to relate their knowledge, skills, and experience to the position (Indeed; University of Western Australia).

How to build a convincing answer

  1. Identify a role requirement. Choose a skill that appears in the job description or is clearly needed for one of its responsibilities.
  2. Name your skill. Be precise: “clear written communication” or “organizing work across deadlines” is more informative than “I’m a people person” or “I’m hardworking.”
  3. Give a brief example. Explain the situation, what you did, and what happened as a result. A STAR-style account—situation, task, action, result—can help keep the example clear.
  4. Connect it to this job. Say how you would apply the same skill to a responsibility or need in the role. Researching the employer and position helps make this connection specific, as Indeed recommends.

A simple frame is: “You’re looking for [role need]. I bring [relevant skill], which I used when [brief situation and action]. That led to [result], and I’d apply the same approach here by [role-specific contribution].” Treat this as a structure, not a script: replace the brackets with truthful details and speak naturally.

Choose evidence that matches your experience

If you have direct experience

Use a real example from work, an internship, or another relevant setting. Keep the focus on your own actions and the outcome, then relate that experience to a duty in the new role. Avoid claiming results you cannot support.

If you are changing careers

Show how a skill from your previous field transfers to the new one. For example, you might explain how you used communication, problem-solving, or adaptability in your earlier work and connect that skill to a specific responsibility in the target role. Indeed UK identifies these as examples of transferable skills (Indeed UK).

If you are applying for an entry-level job

You do not need to have held the same job before. Use relevant coursework, volunteer work, or other experience as evidence, and explain how it relates to the work you would do. Indeed UK recommends connecting these kinds of experience directly to the role (Indeed UK).

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Listing too many skills: An unranked list makes it harder for the interviewer to see your strongest fit. Choose one or two and support them.
  • Using claims without proof: Saying “I’m a great problem-solver” is less useful than briefly describing a problem you handled and what you did.
  • Giving an example with no link to the role: Explain why the skill and experience matter for this employer’s requirements.
  • Overstating your contribution: Keep the example accurate, specific, and clear about your role in the result.

Prepare and practise

Before the interview, review the job description, select your strongest relevant example, and practise delivering it in a few clear sentences. Rehearsal can help you stay focused without making the answer sound memorized. Indeed’s article also mentions interview practice and personalized feedback through Career Scout in the Indeed app; availability may vary, so check the app directly if you want to use that feature (Indeed).
