Add items, open checkout, select the displayed payment method, choose PayPal, and complete PayPal’s authorization. Availability varies by country, account, platform, order type and DoorDash’s current interface.
DoorDash’s current U.S. help page documents adding credit and debit cards, but does not provide a universal PayPal setup path. Its Canadian backup-payment documentation does list PayPal as a supported method in that feature. Check checkout before assuming PayPal is unavailable.
Can you use PayPal on DoorDash?
Sometimes. DoorDash payment options are conditional, so a PayPal button may appear for one account or order and not another. The current U.S. payment-help category does not show a dedicated, universal PayPal setup article: DoorDash’s payment help. DoorDash’s Canadian backup-payment FAQ lists PayPal, Venmo and Cash App among eligible backup methods, but that documentation does not prove identical controls for every U.S. account: Canadian backup-payment FAQ.
PayPal can also be excluded from a particular DoorDash feature. For example, DoorDash’s Canadian Dine Out card-linking documentation excludes PayPal and Venmo for that feature: Dine Out card-linking rules. Ordinary delivery checkout and special programs can therefore have different payment rules.

How to add PayPal in the DoorDash app
Use the checkout flow on either iPhone or Android. Labels can differ by app version and region.
- Open DoorDash and sign in to your consumer account.
- Add an eligible restaurant, grocery or retail item to your cart.
- Tap Checkout.
- Tap the currently displayed payment method.
- Select PayPal, Add PayPal or a similarly labelled alternative-payment option, if shown.
- Complete PayPal’s secure sign-in and approve the connection or billing agreement. Do not type PayPal credentials into DoorDash’s card-number form.
- In PayPal, select or confirm the funding source you want to use.
- Return to DoorDash and verify that PayPal is still selected before placing the order.
DoorDash’s documented card paths are different: on iPhone, Account → Payment → Add Payment Method → Credit/Debit Card; on Android, open the top-left account icon, then Payment Methods → Add Payment Method → Credit/Debit Card. Those instructions are for cards, not proof that PayPal can always be added in that menu: DoorDash card instructions.
How to add PayPal on the DoorDash website
- Sign in at DoorDash.com.
- Add your items and proceed to checkout.
- Open the payment-method selector.
- Choose PayPal if it appears.
- Sign in to PayPal, approve the authorization and review the selected funding source.
- Confirm PayPal is selected in the final order summary, then place the order.
On desktop, DoorDash officially documents Account → Payment → Add New Payment Method → Credit/Debit Card for cards. PayPal may be offered only during checkout rather than as a saved entry.
Using PayPal without saving it permanently
Some DoorDash interfaces let you select PayPal for a single checkout and authorize the transaction without creating a reusable PayPal entry under account settings. If DoorDash does not retain the authorization, you may need to sign in and approve PayPal again on a later order. Treat checkout availability—not the presence of a saved-payment record—as the deciding test.

Choose the bank account, card or balance PayPal uses
DoorDash selects PayPal; PayPal determines how that payment is funded. PayPal supports a balance, linked bank account, Visa, Mastercard, Discover or American Express card, and other products that may be offered on your account: PayPal payment methods.
- Open PayPal and go to Wallet.
- Select the bank account or card you want.
- Set it as the preferred method if appropriate.
- If DoorDash appears under automatic payments or merchant authorizations, review that entry separately.
- Return to DoorDash and check the payment method before ordering.
A preferred Wallet method is not a guarantee that every DoorDash charge will use your PayPal balance. If the preferred source is unavailable or insufficient, PayPal may use a backup source. Existing automatic payments or billing agreements can retain separate funding settings, so changing your general Wallet preference may not change an existing DoorDash authorization.
Set PayPal as a DoorDash default or backup method
Do not assume every account supports a permanent PayPal default. If the payment selector offers Set as default or a similar control, you can use it. Where DoorDash exposes backup-payment settings, PayPal may be eligible; the cited Canadian FAQ says DoorDash can retry another eligible method when the default fails. That behavior is market-specific and should not be treated as a universal U.S. rule.
PayPal is missing from DoorDash
- Confirm you are in the consumer DoorDash app, not the Dasher or merchant app.
- Update DoorDash through the official iOS App Store or Google Play Store.
- Sign out and back in.
- Try the website if you used the app, or the app if you used the website.
- Test a standard immediate restaurant order rather than a specialized order type.
- Check whether your delivery address and market support PayPal.
- Look at checkout’s payment selector, not only Account → Payment.
- Verify your PayPal account and confirm it has a valid funding source.
- If DoorDash shows an incomplete or failed payment attempt, clear it when the interface allows.
- Contact DoorDash through its consumer support center if PayPal remains absent.
PayPal payment declined
- Check PayPal for an available balance or working linked card or bank account.
- Confirm the linked source is not expired, frozen, removed or over its limit.
- Review billing details and PayPal security notifications.
- Try a different PayPal funding source, then retry once.
- Use another DoorDash payment method if the order is urgent.
A declined order can still leave a temporary authorization. Check both DoorDash order history and PayPal activity before submitting another attempt, so you do not create duplicate pending transactions.

DoorDash used the wrong PayPal funding source
PayPal may have used a backup source because the preferred method was unavailable, or the DoorDash merchant authorization may have retained an older preference.
- Open the DoorDash transaction in PayPal and identify the actual funding source.
- Review your PayPal Wallet preferences.
- Open PayPal’s automatic-payment or merchant-authorization settings and inspect the DoorDash entry.
- Change the funding source before the next order.
- Contact PayPal about a PayPal-side funding dispute and DoorDash about an order, refund or missing-credit issue.
PayPal says a payment method generally cannot be changed or canceled after a payment is sent. Depending on the transaction, you may need a refund and a replacement payment.
Remove PayPal from DoorDash
- In DoorDash, open Account → Payment or Payment Methods.
- If a saved PayPal entry appears, use its Remove, Delete or Unlink control.
- If no PayPal entry exists, sign in to PayPal and inspect Automatic Payments, Linked Businesses or merchant authorizations.
- Cancel or disable the DoorDash authorization there if PayPal provides that option.
- Contact DoorDash support if the authorization remains active or DoorDash keeps selecting PayPal.

A credit or debit card saved directly in DoorDash is the documented fallback. DoorDash’s Canadian backup-payment documentation also names Venmo and Cash App, but availability depends on region and account. Gift cards or account credits may help users who do not want to link a bank account, subject to DoorDash’s redemption rules. Apple Pay and Google Pay are not interchangeable with PayPal for every feature; the cited Canadian backup-payment feature excludes them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add PayPal without a debit card?
Yes, if PayPal offers the option for your account, you can fund it with a PayPal balance or linked bank account. DoorDash must still display PayPal for the order.
Can I pay with my PayPal balance?
Usually you can select a balance in PayPal Wallet, but PayPal may use a linked backup source when the balance is insufficient or unavailable.
Can I use PayPal Credit or another PayPal financing product?
Only if PayPal presents it as an eligible funding choice for that transaction. DoorDash does not guarantee acceptance of every PayPal product.
Does PayPal work with DashPass?
DashPass does not make PayPal universally available. Payment eligibility still depends on your account, market, platform and order flow.

DoorDash decides which combinations the checkout supports. Review the final payment breakdown; do not assume PayPal can be combined with every credit, gift card or special-program payment.
Can I change PayPal after placing an order?
Normally no. PayPal says a sent payment generally cannot have its funding method changed; contact DoorDash or PayPal about cancellation, refund and re payment options.
