For a WooCommerce store, use WooPayments or the official WooCommerce Stripe extension; do not build the Google Pay API yourself unless you have a genuinely custom checkout. Google Pay supplies the shopper’s saved payment and shipping details, while WooPayments or Stripe authorizes the payment, creates the order and pays you.
For most new WooCommerce merchants, the shortest route is WooPayments: connect and verify the account, then open Payments → Settings → Express Checkouts and enable Apple Pay / Google Pay. Existing Stripe users can use WooCommerce → Settings → Payments → Stripe → Payment Methods → Express checkouts.
What you need before setup
- A WordPress site, plus WooCommerce if you sell products, services, bookings or subscriptions through WooCommerce.
- A supported gateway account, such as WooPayments or Stripe, that has completed its business and identity verification.
- Valid product prices, currencies, shipping and tax settings.
- HTTPS across the entire site with a valid SSL/TLS certificate. HTTPS is a technical requirement, not a complete compliance determination.
- A merchant country and currency supported by the selected gateway.
- A test shopper using a compatible browser and device, signed in to Google with an eligible payment method saved to Google Pay.
Google Pay is an express checkout method, not a processor or a replacement for WooCommerce order management. The gateway still handles authorization, refunds, disputes, webhooks and payouts. See Stripe’s Google Pay documentation and the WooPayments requirements for current eligibility details.
The easiest method: WooPayments
WooPayments is generally the simplest choice for a new WooCommerce merchant who wants payment settings, refunds, disputes and payouts in the WordPress environment. Availability and approval depend on your country and business.

1. Install WooCommerce
- In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin.
- Search for WooCommerce, then install and activate it.
- Complete the basic store setup, including products, currency, shipping and tax settings.
There is no standalone “Google Pay for WordPress” button that replaces a payment gateway. The gateway must be connected first.
2. Install and connect WooPayments
Install WooPayments from its official product page or the WordPress plugin directory: woocommerce.com/products/woopayments/ or wordpress.org/plugins/woocommerce-payments/. Start the setup from the WooCommerce payments area and provide the business, representative, store and bank-account information requested. WooPayments performs standard verification, so the exact screens vary by country and account status.
3. Enable Google Pay
- Open Payments → Settings in the WordPress dashboard.
- Find Express Checkouts.
- Check Apple Pay / Google Pay.
- Scroll down and click Save Changes.
In the current WooPayments settings, Apple Pay and Google Pay are enabled together rather than as separate switches.
4. Choose button locations and appearance
From the same Express Checkouts area, use the customization link for Apple Pay / Google Pay. Depending on your checkout setup, you can select product-page, cart-page and checkout-page locations and adjust available text, size, color and border-radius options. Uniform styling in the Express Checkout block can limit some individual style controls. The button remains conditional: it is shown only when the shopper, device, product and checkout meet the gateway’s requirements.

Alternative method: the official WooCommerce Stripe extension
Choose this route if you already use Stripe, want the Stripe Dashboard, or need Stripe’s wider payment-method and fraud-tool ecosystem. Use the official extension from WooCommerce’s Stripe documentation, the WordPress directory or Stripe’s marketplace.

1. Install and connect Stripe
- Install and activate the official WooCommerce Stripe extension.
- Open its WooCommerce settings and start the connection flow.
- Connect an existing Stripe account or create one, then complete Stripe’s verification requirements.
2. Confirm HTTPS and register every domain
The whole store must use HTTPS. In Stripe’s payment-method domains settings, enable every domain or subdomain that can display the button—for example, example.com, www.example.com and a store subdomain. Register relevant testing and production domains where applicable. Stripe’s requirements are documented at docs.stripe.com/google-pay?platform=web.
3. Enable Express Checkout
- Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Payments → Stripe → Payment Methods.
- Scroll to Express checkouts.
- Enable the available Apple Pay / Google Pay option.
- Save the changes.
The current WooCommerce Stripe configuration groups Apple Pay and Google Pay in this setting. The extension itself has no setup or monthly fee according to WooCommerce’s documentation; Stripe processing charges still apply.
Do you need WooCommerce?
When you sell through WooCommerce
WooCommerce gives the gateway the product price, inventory, shipping, taxes, coupons, customer details and order status it needs to complete an express purchase. WooPayments or the official Stripe extension is the practical choice.
When you have ordinary WordPress without WooCommerce
A custom Google Pay button is possible, but it is not the easy route. You would need to tokenize and confirm payments, validate totals, create orders, handle failed and asynchronous payments, process refunds, secure webhooks and calculate shipping and tax. For a form, donation page or simple custom site, Stripe-hosted or embedded Checkout can support Google Pay without a separate custom Google Pay implementation: Stripe’s web integration guide. It will not, however, provide WooCommerce’s inventory and order workflow automatically.
Test Google Pay before going live
WooPayments test procedure
- Turn on WooPayments test mode.
- Open a product, cart or checkout page where you enabled the button.
- Use a compatible browser, sign in to a Google account and add an eligible test payment method.
- Click Google Pay and verify that the payment window says the method will not be charged because the site is in test mode.
- Complete the test order.
- Confirm the order appears in WooCommerce with the expected status.
Also verify stock reduction, customer emails, shipping and tax totals, and a refund if your store needs refunds.

- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate
- No hidden fees and no long-term contracts
- Mobile card reader that accepts payments anywhere & anytime
- Use the free SumUp App on your smartphone or tablet to start accepting transactions
- Simply pay 2.6% +10 per in-person transaction
Stripe test procedure
Use Stripe test mode and its WooCommerce test-payment instructions. Confirm the payment appears in Stripe, the WooCommerce order reaches the correct status, inventory changes correctly, emails are sent and refunds work. A closed Google Pay popup is not proof of a completed payment; check the gateway and order record.
Why the button may not appear
Google Pay is deliberately conditional. A correctly configured merchant may not see it while testing as an ineligible shopper.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check HTTPS: make sure no page or asset is being served over HTTP.
- Check the shopper: use a supported browser and device, sign in to Google and add an eligible payment method.
- Check the gateway: confirm the account is connected, approved and that Apple Pay / Google Pay is enabled.
- Check the domain: register every production, testing, www and subdomain used with Stripe.
- Check country and currency: merchant availability and payment-method eligibility vary by location and currency.
- Check checkout settings: WooPayments documents account conditions that can affect display; allow guest checkout or allow account creation with a password-setup link.
- Check the product: variations, bundles, bookings, memberships, subscriptions, personalization and address-dependent pricing may restrict express checkout.
- Check the theme: a page builder or theme may omit the WooCommerce hooks required for product-page output. Test briefly with a default WooCommerce-compatible theme.
- Check logs: in WooPayments, enable logging under Payments → Settings → Advanced settings, place a test transaction, then review WooCommerce → Status → Logs.
It appears at checkout but not on a product page
The product may not support product-page express checkout, may require configuration, or the theme template may omit the relevant WooCommerce output. Keeping the regular checkout available is essential.
It appears on one domain but not another
Register the missing domain or subdomain with Stripe. Google Pay domain registration is per web domain, not automatically inherited by every hostname.
A duplicate wallet button appears
WooPayments and the Stripe extension are probably both active with wallet payments enabled. Choose one gateway to process Google Pay, disable Apple Pay / Google Pay in the other, clear caches and retest. WooCommerce explains this conflict at its compatibility guidance.

The total or order status is wrong
Test address changes, taxes, shipping zones, free-shipping thresholds, coupons, variations, currency conversion, custom fields, bundles and subscriptions. If payment succeeds but the order is not completed, inspect gateway logs, webhooks, WordPress cron, caching and security plugins, firewall rules, JavaScript errors and checkout-block compatibility. Never mark an order paid merely because the wallet window closed.
Important checkout limitations
Express checkout can bypass normal fields
Apple Pay, Google Pay and Amazon Pay can bypass the standard checkout form. Custom checkout-field extensions may therefore collect nothing during the express purchase. Address-dependent shipping or tax logic must be tested rather than assumed to fail or to work. Compare the express total with regular checkout for physical and virtual products, multiple shipping zones, local pickup, coupons and tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive prices. WooPayments documents these conditions at its express-checkout compatibility page.
Complex products
Variable products, configurable bundles, composites, bookings, memberships, personalized products and products with custom fields may not show a product-page button or may require checkout for final pricing. Keep the normal checkout path as a fallback.
Subscriptions
Recurring payments depend on the gateway, merchant country, WooCommerce Subscriptions configuration and the specific flow. WooPayments documents subscription support at woocommerce.com/document/woopayments/subscriptions/. Test a real subscription product in test mode; a successful one-time payment does not prove recurring billing works.
Apple Pay may appear too
WooPayments and the official Stripe extension group Apple Pay and Google Pay in their current WooCommerce Express Checkout settings. Apple Pay can appear alongside Google Pay in some mobile-browser situations, including certain iPhones running iOS 16 or later; you cannot always force a Google-Pay-only interface.

| Processing costs | Pay-as-you-go. U.S. card pricing shown in current documentation is 2.90% + $0.30, with possible additional international, conversion and dispute charges; rates vary by circumstances. See WooPayments fees. | Country- and payment-method-dependent. See Stripe pricing. |
| Main trade-off | Less suitable where WooPayments is unavailable or a different underwriting arrangement is required. | Domain setup is less intuitive for beginners, and enabling it alongside WooPayments can duplicate wallet buttons. |
When custom Google Pay development makes sense
Use a custom integration only for a bespoke WordPress application or checkout where you need control unavailable in WooCommerce. The engineering work includes token handling, server-side total validation, payment confirmation, order creation, retries and asynchronous states, refunds, webhooks, fraud controls and security. A standard WooCommerce store should use a gateway integration instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I accept Google Pay without WooCommerce?
Yes. For a simple WordPress form or custom site, use a Stripe-hosted or embedded Checkout flow that supports Google Pay. A custom button requires substantially more payment and order-management development.
Is Google Pay free for merchants?
The WooPayments and Stripe extensions do not add setup or monthly software fees under their current documentation, but payment-processing fees still apply and vary by gateway, country, currency and payment method.
Do I need a separate Google Pay merchant account?
For the WooPayments and official WooCommerce Stripe routes, you normally configure Google Pay through the connected gateway. You still need the gateway account, verification and an eligible shopper wallet.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I enable Google Pay without Apple Pay?
Not through the current WooPayments or official WooCommerce Stripe Express Checkout setting; the options are grouped together.
Does Google Pay work with subscriptions?
It may, depending on gateway, country, WooCommerce Subscriptions settings and checkout flow. Test the actual subscription product in gateway test mode.
How do I test without charging a customer?
Enable WooPayments or Stripe test mode, use the provider’s test payment method and confirm both the gateway transaction and WooCommerce order.
