How TierPoint Built a Data Center Footprint Across Regional U.S. Markets

TierPoint grew from one Dallas facility into a company-reported 40 data centers across 20 U.S. markets through acquisitions and later facility investments.

TierPoint’s expansion began with one Dallas data center in 2010. By March 2026, the company reported operating 40 data centers across 20 U.S. markets. The growth came through successive acquisitions of regional operators, followed by investments in individual facilities and planned capacity—not one merger or a single building program.

From a Dallas facility to the TierPoint name

TierPoint traces its start to a 2010 Dallas data center acquisition. Investor Stephens Group identifies the acquired operator as Colo4 and says the original company was founded as Cequel Data Centers in July 2010. In the years that followed, Cequel assembled a broader platform through acquisitions including Perimeter Technology, TierPoint, Adhost and Baltimore Technology Park. The combined company adopted the TierPoint name in July 2013, according to Stephens Group’s account and Thompson Street Capital Partners’ portfolio history.

The changing names can obscure the sequence: the Dallas facility was the starting point, Cequel was the early corporate platform, and TierPoint became the name for the combined business in 2013. Subsequent deals expanded the platform beyond its original base.

Acquisitions extended the footprint market by market

2014: Xand added a Northeast presence

TierPoint identifies Xand as a major 2014 acquisition. Contemporary coverage by Data Center Knowledge said the deal expanded TierPoint’s Northeast footprint and added customers. It illustrates how buying an established operator could bring facilities and customer relationships into the company at once.

2015: More operators and data center assets

TierPoint’s company history lists Hosted Solutions as a major 2015 acquisition. Thompson Street’s transaction chronology also records deals involving CxP, AlteredScale and Windstream Communications data centers that year. These transactions helped assemble a geographically distributed business, though an acquisition chronology should not be read as proof that every acquired asset remains in the current portfolio.

2016: Cosentry made the Midwest strategy explicit

In January 2016, TierPoint announced its planned acquisition of Cosentry, which operated nine data centers in Midwest markets including Omaha, St. Louis, Kansas City, Sioux Falls and Milwaukee. TierPoint projected that the combined company would reach 39 data centers in 20 markets upon closing; that was a projected transaction figure, not a current count. The announcement described the Midwest as strategically advantageous and pointed to demand for data center services. CEO Jerry Kent said the deal gave TierPoint “a significant, strategic advantage in key Midwest markets.” The details and the company’s characterization are in TierPoint’s January 21, 2016 announcement.

Cosentry is the clearest example of the regional-market logic behind the growth story: rather than entering each location by building from scratch, TierPoint acquired an operator already serving several Midwestern cities. That approach could add local facilities and customer relationships together. It does not, by itself, establish why every deal was made or how each acquisition performed financially.

Buying facilities was only part of the growth story

Fort Worth: an acquired facility with stated available capacity

In January 2024, TierPoint announced its acquisition of a Fort Worth data center, which it said gave it a third facility in greater Dallas. At announcement, the building had 208,000 total square feet, including 45,000 square feet of data center production space, and 5 MW available. Those are point-in-time figures reported by TierPoint, not current capacity guarantees. The company said the facility could scale in the near and long term. See the January 8, 2024 release.

TekPark: a large expansion target, not a confirmed milestone

In October 2025, TierPoint announced that it had purchased its largest formerly leased data center and the 137-acre TekPark campus in Eastern Pennsylvania. The company said it had begun a 100 MW power expansion and targeted completion in the second half of 2026. That date is a company-stated target; the available announcement does not confirm the expansion is complete or the power is online. TierPoint’s October 23, 2025 announcement tied the campus purchase to a $240 million asset-backed securities issuance.

The distinction matters: acquisitions brought existing facilities and operating businesses into the footprint, while projects such as TekPark target additional capacity at a site. An announced expansion should not be counted as delivered operating capacity until completion is established.

What “secondary markets” means in this history

Data Center Knowledge used the phrase “empire in secondary markets” to frame TierPoint’s expansion. Here, it is best understood as trade-press shorthand for growth across regional U.S. markets rather than a formal industry category that applies uniformly to every TierPoint location. The Cosentry transaction and the company’s early geographic-diversity rationale support a story of acquiring operators outside a single dominant hub; they do not prove that geography alone explains each acquisition.

The phrase “empire” also needs qualification. In a March 30, 2026 announcement, TierPoint reported a footprint of 40 data centers in 20 U.S. markets. That is a dated company-reported count, not an independently audited facility tally or evidence of market share. Earlier figures differ because they refer to different dates and transaction stages: Cosentry’s 39-facility total was projected upon closing in 2016, while TierPoint referred to a 40-facility portfolio in its 2024 Fort Worth announcement. The 2026 count is reported in TierPoint’s March 30, 2026 announcement.

How the expansion adds up

TierPoint’s history is a sequence of platform assembly and facility-level investment: a Dallas starting point, early acquisitions under the Cequel name, larger operator deals from 2014 to 2016, and later purchases and expansion plans at specific sites. That chronology explains how a regional data center provider built a broad footprint. It does not establish independent market dominance, a verified return on acquisitions, or completion of the planned TekPark power expansion.
