The effect is strongest, all else equal, when a valuation depends on profits expected far in the future. It is not a rule that every AI stock must fall: earnings expectations, risk premiums, financing needs and views about AI’s economic impact can offset or intensify the rate effect.
Why higher rates can lower stock valuations
A stock’s price reflects the value investors assign to its expected future payoffs. To compare dollars expected later with dollars today, investors discount those future payoffs. For a risky asset, the discount rate includes a safe interest rate and a risk premium for the possibility of losses. If the safe-rate component rises while expected payoffs and the risk premium stay unchanged, the present value falls. The Federal Reserve explains this asset-pricing mechanism in its May 2021 Financial Stability Report.
The timing of cash flows matters. A company expected to generate substantial cash only years from now is more exposed to a change in the discount rate than one whose value is supported by nearer-term cash flows, all else equal. That is a valuation principle, not a published ranking of AI companies: the cited sources do not estimate a single rate-sensitivity measure for AI stocks as a group or for individual firms.
What can offset or deepen the pressure
The all-else-equal calculation is not a forecast of a share price. A rate rise may occur alongside stronger economic growth or improved expectations for a company’s future earnings, which can support its valuation. Conversely, weaker earnings expectations or a higher risk premium can add to the pressure. The Federal Reserve’s primer notes that asset prices can change as expected payoffs, interest rates and risk premiums shift, sometimes in opposing directions.

It also matters which rate is changing. A central bank’s policy rate, long-term Treasury yields and real yields are related but distinct measures. A valuation discussion should specify the relevant rate rather than treating “interest rates” as one interchangeable number. The risk premium is another separate input: investors may demand more compensation for risk even if Treasury yields do not move.
What current market indicators do—and do not—show
The Federal Reserve’s November 2025 Financial Stability Report said the aggregate forward price-to-earnings ratio for S&P 500 companies—prices relative to expected earnings over the next 12 months—was well above its historical median. It also said the Fed’s estimated equity-premium measure was near a 20-year low as of October. That rough measure compares forward earnings-to-price with the real 10-year Treasury yield.

Those are broad U.S. equity-market indicators, not an AI-stock valuation test. They do not establish that every AI-related company is overvalued, that a bubble exists, or that a correction is imminent.
In May 2026, the Federal Reserve reported that 20 market contacts surveyed during March and April raised AI-related equity valuations, debt-financed capital spending and labor-market effects as concerns. Some respondents identified AI valuation concerns as a possible trigger for a correction in risk assets. The report says the survey summary should not be interpreted as the views of the Federal Reserve Board or the New York Fed; it is market intelligence from a limited group, not a representative poll or central-bank forecast. How to compare AI companies when rates rise
The label “AI stock” covers businesses with different earnings, funding needs and exposure to future adoption. To think through rate sensitivity, compare the underlying drivers rather than assuming all such shares react alike:
- Cash-flow timing: Is the investment case supported by current earnings and cash generation, or mainly by profits expected much later?
- Valuation versus earnings: How much of the share price depends on earnings estimates continuing to grow or being achieved?
- Financing exposure: Does the company rely on external borrowing, or face substantial refinancing needs?
- Dependence on adoption: How much does the valuation depend on future AI use translating into productivity, revenue or margins?
These are questions for analysis, not a ranking of particular companies. Company-specific conclusions require company-specific earnings, cash-flow, financing and valuation assumptions.

AI may also affect the rates investors use
The relationship can run in both directions: interest rates influence valuations, while AI investment and productivity could affect the economic conditions that shape rates. In a September 29, 2026 speech, Federal Reserve Governor Michael S. Barr described a scenario in which a durable productivity increase could raise demand for capital and reduce household saving as expected lifetime earnings rise. Balancing that shift, he said, could require higher equilibrium rates, or r*. Barr also said it was too early to know whether those dynamics were underway. Read his speech on economic conditions and monetary policy.
A separate New York Fed staff report frames AI’s possible monetary-policy effects through cyclical transmission, structural transition and financial stability. Author Simone Lenzu discusses a possible tension: adoption frictions could hold back realized efficiency even as expectations support elevated valuations, creating the possibility of inflation pressure alongside financial fragility. This is an analytical framework in a staff report, not an official policy forecast. See New York Fed Staff Report 1192.

How data-center borrowing could affect long-term yields
AI infrastructure investment may influence rates through financing as well as productivity. A February 2026 Dallas Fed analysis describes possible funding through long-term investment-grade bonds, floating-rate private-credit loans transformed with swaps, and changes in which financial issuers supply duration to markets.
Wall Street estimates reported by the Dallas Fed were centered on $300 billion in AI-related investment-grade issuance for 2026, potentially corresponding to up to $360 billion in 10-year-equivalent duration supply. These were estimates, not final observed issuance totals. The authors reason that additional duration supply could, at the margin, bias yields higher and the yield curve steeper. That is a conditional mechanism, not evidence that AI borrowing alone caused any particular yield movement. See the Dallas Fed analysis published February 10, 2026.
What to take away from a rate increase
Higher rates can lower the present value of distant expected cash flows, so they can weigh more heavily on valuations built around earnings far in the future. But the effect on any one AI stock depends on what happens to its expected cash flows, perceived risk and financing needs, as well as on which rates move. Current aggregate valuation measures and surveyed concerns offer context, not a verdict on every company or a forecast of the next market move.
