How Pokémon Card Grading Works—and What a Grade Does to a Card’s Value

Grading authenticates and assesses condition, but it does not guarantee a higher Pokémon card sale price. Compare exact-card completed sales and subtract all costs.

Pokémon card grading combines an authenticity check, a condition assessment and usually a sealed holder. A grade can make a card’s condition easier to compare, but it does not guarantee a higher sale price. Whether grading is worthwhile depends on the exact card, the grade it is likely to receive, recent completed sales and the costs of grading and selling.

What Pokémon card grading involves

Grading companies assess whether a card is genuine and examine its condition. If it passes authentication, the company assigns a grade under its own standards and typically seals the card in a holder with a label showing the grade and a certification number. The holder is intended to be tamper-evident, not proof that a card is impossible to counterfeit or worth a particular amount.

PSA describes its process as authentication and review for alteration, condition grading on a 1–10 scale, then encapsulation. Other graders may use different scales, criteria, labels and procedures.

Authentication comes before the number

PSA says it checks whether a card is genuine and looks for signs of doctoring before assigning a numerical grade. Its standards list trimming, restoration, recoloring, altered stock, cleaning and questionable authenticity among reasons a card may be returned without a numerical grade. A no-grade outcome may still incur a fee, so check the current submission rules before mailing a card.

What the grade measures

A grade is a condition signal under the grading company’s standard, not a universal measurement shared identically across companies. PSA’s scale runs from 1 to 10. PSA defines a Gem Mint 10 as “a virtually perfect card,” citing sharp corners, sharp focus, full original gloss, no staining and approximate centering tolerances. Its standards also acknowledge that borderline decisions can involve eye appeal and what the market will accept, rather than a purely mechanical test.

How much does grading add to a Pokémon card’s value?

There is no supported universal percentage or multiplier for Pokémon cards. A grade can help buyers compare condition and may affect confidence or the set of buyers interested in a card, but the grade alone does not set its market value. The card’s identity and scarcity, the grade, demand, sale timing and transaction terms all matter. PSA offers price-research tools for its graded cards, but its official materials do not establish one general grading premium for Pokémon cards.

Estimate value by comparing recent completed sales—not asking prices—of the exact card at the grade you are considering with sales of the same card ungraded. Account for the raw copies’ condition differences, and look at a realistic range of likely grades rather than assuming a hoped-for 10. Population counts describe graded-card totals, not prices buyers actually paid.

Calculate the net, not just the slab price

Include the grading fee, shipping to and from the grader, insurance, any value-based upcharge and the fees or other costs involved in selling. Sale dates matter too: the market may change between buying or submitting a raw card and selling the graded one. A useful estimate is conditional: recent completed sales for this exact card and grade may fall in one range, while comparable raw copies fall in another; after costs, the outcome depends on the grade received and the eventual sale price.

PSA’s grade guarantee is subject to terms and restrictions. It is not insurance against market losses or a promise that a card will retain a particular resale price.

PSA fees and turnaround: a dated US snapshot

On PSA’s US-facing service page accessed October 4, 2026, Standard was listed at $59.99 per card, with a $1,000 maximum insured value and an estimated 90–100 business-day turnaround. The same page listed Priority at $79.99 per card and 70–80 business days, and Express at $199 per card and 20–30 business days. These are a dated snapshot, not evergreen quotes. PSA says turnaround estimates are not guaranteed, begin after order entry and scanning, and can change with volume and capacity. Check PSA’s live service page before submitting.

PSA’s February 10, 2026 announcement gave different prices for new submissions at that time: Value Bulk $24.99, Value $32.99, Value Plus $49.99, Value Max $64.99 and Regular $79.99 per card. It listed 45 business days for Value Plus, 35 for Value Max and 25 for Regular. Those figures are historical context; the live service page is the relevant place to check current offerings and prices. Read PSA’s February 2026 announcement.

How to decide whether to submit a card

  1. Identify the card precisely. Match the set, card number, language, edition and any relevant printing or variant details. Sales for a similar-looking card are not a reliable substitute.
  2. Check completed sales. Compare recent realized prices for the exact card in the grades you might reasonably expect and for comparable raw copies. Treat asking prices and population data as different kinds of information.
  3. Estimate the likely grade range. Inspect condition and avoid basing the decision solely on the best possible grade. A lower-than-hoped-for grade can change the economics.
  4. Subtract all costs. Include grading, shipping, insurance, potential value-based charges and selling costs. Consider whether the expected difference between graded and raw sale proceeds still makes sense after those costs.
  5. Consider your goal and timing. A standardized condition label may be useful even if a sale is not planned, but grading ties up the card during processing and does not remove market risk.

Submitting safely and checking a graded card

Prepare a submission

PSA’s FAQ describes completing an online submission form and mailing the form, card and payment. Follow the chosen grader’s current packing instructions; PSA warns that poorly packed, hard-to-retrieve or transit-damaged submissions may be refused. A Card Saver-style sleeve is one possible preparation accessory, not a universal requirement or a way to improve a grade.

PSA says at least two authentication and grading professionals examine cards entering its grading room and that professionals must agree on a grade, while acknowledging differences of opinion. This is PSA’s description of its process, not a promise that every grader uses the same review method.

Verify a graded-card purchase

When buying a slabbed card, use the grading company’s official certification lookup and available front- and back-card images. Check that the card identity, label and certification details agree. Verification can help assess whether the certification record matches the item, but neither a lookup nor a tamper-evident holder establishes the card’s market value. Use PSA’s certification verification tool; see also PSA’s FAQ.
