Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsObject First’s Ootbi appliances give Veeam environments a dedicated, S3-compatible backup target that combines S3 Object Lock immutability with restricted administration, a hardened Linux system and physical separation from the Veeam server. That can make backups harder to delete or alter after a credential compromise, but it is not a complete ransomware-recovery plan: organizations still need independent identities, off-site copies, restore testing and a recovery process.
Why a conventional backup repository can fail during ransomware
Ransomware operators increasingly target recovery systems after compromising production. If the Veeam server, its service accounts or a shared storage-management plane is breached, an attacker may be able to delete repositories, change retention, disable jobs, encrypt backup files or remove recovery points.
A repository that is merely hidden from ordinary users is not necessarily immutable. Administrative access, root or SSH access, weak credentials, shared networks and configuration drift can all create destructive paths. Cyber resilience therefore means preserving usable recovery points after compromise, not simply preventing the first infection.
What Ootbi is
Ootbi is Object First’s dedicated backup-storage appliance for Veeam. Ootbi Mini uses a smaller desktop form factor while carrying the same general security and immutability positioning. The vendor markets clustered systems with automatic scaling and load balancing, from approximately 8 TB to more than 7 PB depending on appliance, cluster and multi-cluster architecture (Object First product information).

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Capacity figures need careful interpretation. Object First separately describes up to 1.7 PB in a cluster and up to four nodes in a cluster; figures above 7 PB refer to multiple-cluster architectures rather than one four-node system. Ask whether any quotation shows raw or usable capacity and what protection overhead is included.
How data moves between Veeam and Ootbi
- Veeam Backup & Replication creates and manages backup jobs, retention and restore workflows.
- Veeam sends backup data to Ootbi through S3-compatible object-storage protocols, using HTTPS.
- The appliance applies storage-side object immutability and controls administrative access.
- Veeam continues to track jobs, restore points and retention policy.
Object First says Ootbi supports Veeam’s direct-to-object functionality and Smart Object Storage API, formerly described in some materials as the SOS API. Exact support depends on the Veeam edition and version deployed. Object First says the appliance was developed and tested with Veeam’s direct-to-object integration before its introduction with Veeam Backup & Replication 12 (Object First architecture guide; Veeam/Object First solution brief).
What “immutable” means at each layer
Veeam’s retention control
Veeam’s object-storage immutability prevents deletion and modification during the configured immutability period. Its documentation states that immutable data cannot be removed manually, by retention processing, through cloud-provider tools or by provider support during that period (Veeam object-storage immutability documentation). This is time-limited protection: when the period expires, normal retention processing can remove data.
Ootbi’s storage enforcement
Object First says Ootbi uses S3 Object Lock and makes data immutable as soon as it is written, describing this as “Zero time to immutability.” It also says privileged administrators cannot alter or delete immutable data (Object First Trust Center). “Absolute Immutability” is Object First’s product terminology, not an independently recognized industry standard. Buyers should verify the Object Lock mode, retention behavior and support-access boundaries in current technical documentation.
Operational resilience
Object Lock protects retained objects; it does not guarantee that backups are complete, malware-free, off-site, available after a fire or restorable from a compromised Veeam environment. Identity, network design, monitoring, recovery infrastructure and testing remain separate controls.

Zero Access and administrative separation
Object First describes a Zero Access architecture intended to reduce destructive administrative paths. Its stated controls include:
- No customer root access and SSH disabled by default.
- A hardened Linux operating system with controlled TUI access.
- Multi-factor authentication and fail-to-ban lockout after repeated failed logins.
- Continuous verification of expected configuration and drift monitoring.
- Automatic firmware, operating-system and software updates.
- Built-in honeypot detection.
These controls reduce the number of ways a compromised administrator can reach the operating system or storage application. They do not mean the vendor can never access a system, that hardware cannot fail or that an online appliance is an air gap. Confirm how support intervention, factory reset, break-glass access and expired retention are handled.
Physical separation also matters. A compromised Veeam server should not automatically provide operating-system access to the storage appliance, and storage administrators should not necessarily be able to change Veeam job policy. Object First describes read-only IAM policies for testing and restoring from a separate recovery Veeam server (solution brief). Network segmentation is still required; continuous S3 reachability is not the same as offline isolation.
Deploying Ootbi with Veeam
Plan before powering on
- Check the installed Veeam Backup & Replication version and edition against current S3-compatible repository support.
- Select the appliance model, usable capacity, cluster limit and support entitlement.
- Set retention and immutability periods to match detection time, investigation and recovery requirements.
- Reserve IP addresses, define firewall routes and separate production, storage-management and recovery networks where practical.
- Use independent credentials and MFA for Veeam and Ootbi.
- Decide whether Ootbi is the primary repository, a backup-copy target or both, and design a second resilience zone.
Add the repository
Veeam’s current S3-compatible workflow is version-specific, but the high-level sequence is:
- Open the New Object Storage Repository wizard.
- Choose the S3-compatible object-storage option.
- Enter the object-storage account and endpoint.
- Configure object-storage and, where required, mount-server settings.
- Review and apply the configuration.
- Set repository retention and immutability.
- Run a test backup and confirm that Veeam reports immutable restore points.
- Perform file-level, full-VM or Instant Recovery tests.
Object First advertises setup in about 15 minutes with three IP addresses, a username, a password and MFA setup (current datasheet). That describes appliance setup, not cabling, firewall changes, initial full backups, monitoring, documentation or recovery exercises.

Performance and scaling claims
| Claim | Qualification |
|---|---|
| Up to 8 GB/s ingest | Object First vendor maximum; not an independent test or a guaranteed customer result. |
| Up to 2 GB/s per node | Vendor claim in 2025 partner material; workload and model dependent. |
| Up to 180 VMs for Instant Recovery on a four-node cluster | Datasheet claim; depends on VM size, concurrency, network and restore workload. |
| Up to 1.7 PB in a cluster | Vendor guide figure; confirm usable capacity and exact appliance configuration. |
| Beyond 7 PB | Multiple-cluster aggregate marketing range, not a single-cluster limit. |
Real throughput depends on source read speed, network bandwidth, concurrent jobs, compression and deduplication, encryption, repository fullness, restore patterns and rebuild activity. Treat these figures as sizing inputs to validate with a workload proof of concept, not as recovery-time guarantees.
Where Ootbi fits in a 3-2-1-1-0 design
Ootbi is one repository in a broader Veeam resilience architecture:
Recommended Free Tools
- 3 copies: production data plus at least two backup copies.
- 2 media: for example, appliance storage and cloud or another storage platform.
- 1 off-site copy: a separate facility or cloud service.
- 1 offline, air-gapped or immutable copy: Ootbi can provide the immutable layer, but an online appliance is not automatically offline.
- 0 recovery errors: routinely verify restores rather than assuming a successful backup job is recoverable.
Object First positions Ootbi as an on-premises repository that can be paired with cloud backup or used as a remote target through Veeam Cloud Connect (solution brief). Use a separate recovery Veeam server, independent credentials and documented procedures for a compromised production Veeam environment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Ootbi does not solve
One site can still be lost
Fire, flood, theft, sabotage, prolonged power loss or a site-wide network outage can remove access to a local appliance. Maintain an off-site copy and, where the risk justifies it, an offline or logically isolated copy.
Retention can be too short
A 30-day immutability window does not help if an intrusion remains undetected for 45 days. Set retention using detection latency, regulatory needs, backup frequency, recovery objectives and investigation time.

Veeam and identity remain targets
Protect Veeam service accounts, console access, Active Directory, MFA enrollment, API credentials, DNS and cloud credentials. Restrict management paths and monitor changes to jobs, retention and repository access.
Updates introduce a supply-chain dependency
Object First says updates delivered from its servers include the Linux kernel and proprietary object-storage software (Object First guide). Ask about signing, release policy, rollback, vulnerability response and support procedures.
How it compares with alternatives
| Option | Strength | Main responsibility or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hardened Linux repository | Control over hardware, filesystem and operating system; potentially low acquisition cost. | Your team owns root access, hardening, patching, drift monitoring, hardware lifecycle and rebuilds. |
| Amazon S3, Wasabi or another S3 target | Off-site capacity and geographic flexibility. | You manage IAM, Object Lock, policies, monitoring, bandwidth and retrieval costs. Veeam lists supported targets in its documentation (Veeam list). |
| Veeam Data Cloud Vault | Managed, off-site storage integrated with Veeam. | Cloud access, provider dependency, bandwidth and plan-specific pricing. |
| ExaGrid | Purpose-built backup appliance with a different scale-out and deduplication architecture. | Evaluate its Veeam integration, immutability model and workload-specific performance (ExaGrid). |
| Dell Cyber Recovery | Vault- and isolation-oriented enterprise cyber-recovery design. | May be excessive for a small Veeam-only deployment (Dell Cyber Recovery). |
| HPE Alletra | Broad enterprise storage platform. | More general-purpose and potentially more complex than a dedicated backup appliance (HPE Alletra). |
Buyer checklist
- What is usable capacity after protection overhead, and is it per node, per cluster or multi-cluster?
- What happens to recovery-point availability and performance when a node fails or rebuilds?
- Which customer, vendor or support accounts can access the system, and what is the break-glass process?
- Which Object Lock mode and retention rules are implemented?
- What happens when retention expires or the appliance is factory-reset?
- What support SLA, replacement process and firmware rollback options apply?
- Can the vendor demonstrate your backup, restore, Instant Recovery and compromised-Veeam scenarios?
- What second-site, cloud or offline copy will complete the 3-2-1-1-0 design?
- Is pricing CapEx, consumption-based or both, and what is included in support?
Verdict
Object First is a strong fit for a Veeam-focused organization that wants a dedicated on-premises immutable repository without designing and continuously hardening a general-purpose Linux or storage platform. Its differentiator is the combination of S3 Object Lock, restricted administration, segmentation and appliance operations—not exclusive access to immutable Veeam backups.
Choose it only as part of a complete recovery architecture: protect identities, keep an independent off-site copy, test restores, plan for site loss and verify the appliance’s failure and support boundaries before purchase.
