What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no dependable price for a used TV based on screen size alone. A 48-inch OLED can be worth more than an older 65-inch LCD. To set a realistic price, identify the exact model, check recent sold comparables, adjust for condition and accessories, subtract selling and transport costs, then add a modest negotiation margin.
This guide shows how to calculate an asking price, choose the right marketplace, test and photograph the set, and decide when selling is not worth the effort.
The five-minute valuation method
- Find the exact model number. Photograph the rear label or read the Settings/About screen. Record brand, size, model year, panel type, resolution, smart platform, refresh rate, gaming features and warranty status. Hide unnecessary serial-number details in public photos.
- Test the television. Check the picture, inputs, audio, remote, Wi-Fi and apps. Record every defect before listing.
- Research sold prices. On eBay, search the exact model, open Advanced Search, select Completed listings and focus on items that actually sold. eBay explains this process at its pricing guide.
- Check local competition. Search Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp for the same model and close equivalents. Treat these as asking prices, not proof of completed sales.
- Adjust for differences. Account for panel condition, age, missing remote or stand, software limitations, warranty, pickup difficulty and included extras.
- Set three numbers. Choose a minimum acceptable amount, a target sale price and an asking price that leaves reasonable room to negotiate.
What determines a TV’s resale value?
Exact model number
“55-inch Samsung” is not enough for a precise valuation. Models of the same size can differ in OLED or LCD panels, HDR performance, refresh rate, local dimming, HDMI 2.1, gaming functions, operating system and release year. Look on the rear label, original box, receipt, Settings/About menu or the manufacturer’s account or app.
Size and transport
Larger screens attract attention but are difficult to move. A buyer may need a truck and two people, so a 75-inch set priced only slightly below a new model can still be unattractive. Size affects demand and logistics; it is not a standalone valuation method.

Panel technology
- LED/LCD: Common and generally easiest to compare with current budget sets.
- QLED, full-array local dimming and Mini-LED: Picture-quality features can support stronger prices when the exact model is sought after.
- OLED: Often desirable, but burn-in risk and panel age must be disclosed.
- Plasma: Heavy and power-hungry, with a smaller market.
- CRT: Limited mainstream demand but possible retro-gaming interest.
Age and model year
Model year usually matters more than when you bought the TV. A recently purchased clearance set may still be several generations old. Compare it with current discounted, open-box and refurbished televisions, not its original MSRP.
Condition
- Excellent: Fully functional, clean screen, minimal wear and complete accessories.
- Good: Fully functional with minor visible wear.
- Fair: Works but has notable cosmetic wear, missing accessories, slow software or other limitations.
- Defective: Any image, power, input, audio, remote, network or panel problem.
- Parts-only: Unreliable operation or a cracked/broken panel.
Disclose scratches, dead pixels, uneven brightness, lines, flicker, burn-in and intermittent faults. Facebook’s guidance recommends accurate condition details and clear photos: seller safety and listing guidance.
Accessories and warranty
Original remote, power cable, tabletop stand and screws matter most to local buyers. A wall-mount bracket, HDMI cables, box, manual, soundbar or streaming device can add convenience, but only include their value if the buyer actually wants them. A transferable, documented warranty may justify a premium.
Smart features and software
Old apps may be slow or unsupported. Buyers may value an older smart TV mainly as a display for a streaming stick or console. Test current apps rather than promising support for a specific service.

Use sold listings first
For each comparable, record sale price, shipping, condition, accessories, sale date, auction or fixed-price format, location and any warranty or return terms. Gather five to ten close matches when possible. Use a median or trimmed range; one unusually high sale should not set your price.

Use local listings to measure competition
Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp show what sellers are requesting today. OfferUp recommends putting the brand, model and key detail in the title and covering specifications, condition, included items and terms in the description: OfferUp listing guidance. Repeatedly relisted items may indicate that the asking price is too high.
Build an adjusted range
| Comparable | Sale price | Condition match | Accessories match | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | $X | High | High | $0 |
| B | $Y | Medium | Missing remote | Subtract replacement-remote cost and inconvenience |
| C | $W | Low | Bundled soundbar | Remove value of the extra |
| Adjusted midpoint | Use the median of the comparable adjusted values | |||
Calculate your target and asking price
Use this worksheet:
Comparable sold-price midpoint − condition adjustment − missing-accessory adjustment − fees − shipping, packing or delivery costs = target net value.
Then add a negotiation margin:
Target net value + negotiation margin = asking price.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHypothetical example: if adjusted sold comparables suggest $300, you estimate $20 in missing-remote and condition deductions, and expect $30 in transaction or delivery costs, your target net value is $250. If you will accept $250 and want $25 to $50 of negotiating room, list around $275 to $300. Do not start dramatically above credible comparables; that usually produces no serious inquiries.
Choose a strategy based on your goal
| Goal | Approach |
|---|---|
| Fastest sale | Use the lower-middle of credible local comparables, offer convenient pickup and price clearly. |
| Fair-market sale | Use the adjusted sold-price midpoint and allow a modest negotiation margin. |
| Maximum-price attempt | Start somewhat higher only if the model is premium, scarce or exceptionally documented; set a reduction deadline. |
| Defective or parts-only | Describe the fault plainly and price for parts, or recycle if transport and messaging exceed likely proceeds. |
Use a reduction schedule
- Days 1–3: Publish an accurate, well-photographed listing at your planned asking price.
- Days 4–7: If there are views but no credible offers, make a modest reduction.
- After one to two weeks: Recheck sold and local listings, improve the title or photos, and revise pickup terms.
- Final stage: Set a firm quick-sale price or choose donation/recycling.
Many messages that never become a pickup can indicate trust, logistics or scam issues rather than an incorrect price.

Which platform should you use?
| Platform | Best use | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook Marketplace | Large TVs and fast local pickup | Large audience, but ghosting, aggressive negotiation and scams are common. Inspect profiles and follow Facebook’s safety guidance at its seller-help page. |
| OfferUp | Local selling with ratings and structured fields | Useful additional exposure; activity varies by market. Follow OfferUp’s listing recommendations. |
| Craigslist | Simple local classified advertising | Less built-in identity and rating information, so communication and meeting precautions are your responsibility. |
| eBay | Premium, rare, compact or niche models | National reach comes with fees, packing, shipping damage, returns and disputes. The fee schedule reviewed in August 2026 listed 9.35% for most consumer-electronics sales up to $2,500 plus a per-order fee, but category and account rates can change. Check current seller fees and fee factors. Calculate net proceeds because fees may include item price, shipping, sales tax and other applicable amounts. |
For an oversized TV, local pickup is usually more practical than shipping. Use eBay when the national buyer pool and model scarcity justify the added risk and cost.
Test and photograph the TV before listing
Testing checklist
- Display white, black, red, green and blue screens; look for dead pixels, lines, flicker, uneven brightness, burn-in and pressure marks.
- Test every HDMI and USB port, optical audio, Ethernet, antenna input, Bluetooth and ARC/eARC where applicable.
- Check speakers, volume and power buttons, remote and voice control.
- Connect Wi-Fi, load relevant apps, play a stream and perform a factory reset.
Photos buyers need
- Powered-on front view with a normal picture.
- Screen switched off to show scratches or surface wear.
- Rear model label, with unnecessary serial details obscured.
- Remote, stand, screws, mounting hardware and ports.
- Close-ups of every flaw, dead pixel or burn-in area.
- Side profile for large or unusually thick sets.

Minor cosmetic wear on the rear housing; no cracks or screen scratches. Factory reset before pickup. Local pickup only; buyer should bring help and a suitable vehicle.
State the model and approximate year, tested functions, defects, included items, account-reset status, pickup or delivery terms, payment method and whether the price is firm. Never write “works perfectly” unless you tested the functions that matter.
Safe payment, privacy and handoff
- Factory-reset the TV, sign out of streaming accounts and remove saved Wi-Fi credentials.
- Keep a private photo of the serial number and retain the listing and messages.
- Use a public meeting place where practical. For home pickup, restrict access to unrelated parts of the home.
- Verify cash or digital payment in your own account before releasing the TV. Screenshots are not proof.
- Do not click payment or shipping links sent by buyers, and do not ship until payment is confirmed inside the platform.
- Let the buyer inspect and test the set before loading it.
- Transport the TV upright with two people, avoiding pressure on the panel. Use the original box and appropriate insurance if shipping.
Facebook specifically recommends clearing personal information and recording the serial number before selling electronics: Facebook seller guidance.

Sell, donate, recycle or keep?
- Sell when the TV works, has an identifiable model, no major panel defect and expected proceeds justify testing, messaging and moving it.
- Donate when it works but has little resale value and convenience matters more than cash.
- Recycle when the panel is cracked, lines or power faults are severe, or repair and transport cost more than likely proceeds.
Best Buy says trade-in offers can depend on age, condition, required accessories and current resale prices, with inspection and functionality checks. Check the specific device in the current estimator and review the trade-in FAQs; not every television is eligible.
Common pricing mistakes
- Using original MSRP instead of current new-TV prices and sold comparables.
- Applying a universal depreciation percentage to every brand and panel.
- Confusing active asking prices with completed sales.
- Ignoring fees, shipping, delivery, packing, negotiation and your time.
- Hiding burn-in, dead pixels, scratches or intermittent faults.
- Assuming smart features retain value indefinitely.
- Ignoring the buyer’s transport burden.
- Choosing eBay for a large, low-value set whose fees and shipping risk consume the proceeds.
- Giving an exact value for “a 55-inch TV” without the model number.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a 55-inch TV worth?
Screen size alone cannot establish a reliable price. Use the exact model, model year, panel type, condition, accessories and recent sold comparables; a newer 55-inch OLED can be worth far more than an older 55-inch entry-level LCD.
Is a five-year-old TV worth selling?
Possibly, if it works reliably and has a recognizable model. Compare its adjusted sold value with the time and effort required; donation or recycling may be better when the expected proceeds are small.
How much should I discount a TV without a remote?
Deduct the replacement remote’s cost plus inconvenience, and disclose the omission. The reduction is larger when the TV lacks usable physical controls or requires a proprietary remote.
Can I sell a TV with burn-in?
Yes, but disclose and photograph it clearly, describe the affected area and price it as a major condition defect. Some buyers may prefer parts or an inexpensive display.

Should I sell locally or on eBay?
Choose local pickup for most large TVs. eBay is more suitable for premium, rare, compact or niche models when national demand outweighs fees, packaging and shipping risk.
Is a smart TV worth more?
Smart capability can help only when the software remains responsive and useful. Outdated apps or discontinued support can reduce value, and an external streaming device may be all a buyer needs.
Should I include the wall mount?
Include it only if you can identify its compatibility and the buyer wants it. State exactly what hardware is included; the tabletop stand and remote are usually more important for local buyers.
How do I prove that the TV works?
Photograph it powered on, show the model label and document tests of picture, inputs, audio, remote, Wi-Fi and relevant apps. Let the buyer inspect and test it before loading.
How should I transport a large TV?
Keep it upright, use two people, avoid pressure on the panel and secure it against movement. Ship only with safe packaging and appropriate insurance.
What should I do with a cracked-screen TV?
List it only as defective or parts-only if a buyer is likely to want components; otherwise use an electronics-recycling option. A cracked panel is generally not a normal used-TV sale.
How long should I wait before lowering the price?
Set a schedule before listing: reassess after three to seven days, then again after one to two weeks using new sold and local comparables. Improve photos and pickup terms before assuming price is the only problem.
Is the original MSRP relevant?
It explains what the TV once cost but is weak resale evidence. Current discounted new models, open-box inventory and exact-model sold prices are more useful anchors.
