Microsoft Office for Mac ranges from free to $199.99 per year in the U.S. Microsoft 365 for the web is free in a browser; Microsoft 365 Personal is $9.99 monthly or $99.99 annually; Family is $12.99 monthly or $129.99 annually; Premium is $19.99 monthly or $199.99 annually; and Office Home 2024 is a $179.99 one-time purchase. Microsoft’s U.S. Store prices were observed on August 18, 2026, before tax, and can change.

For one person who wants installed Mac apps, ongoing updates and OneDrive, Microsoft 365 Personal is the best default. Family is usually the better deal for two or more people. Choose Office Home 2024 only when avoiding recurring billing matters more than cloud storage, multi-device use and future feature upgrades.

Microsoft 365 Personal

Personal includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook for Mac, use across PCs, Macs, tablets and phones, 1 TB of OneDrive storage, collaboration tools, support, security fixes and ongoing feature updates. AI and Copilot features depend on eligibility, plan limits and Microsoft’s current availability rules. Annual billing is $99.99; paying $9.99 for 12 months would cost $119.88, so annual billing saves about $19.89 at the listed rates.

One-time Office 2024 editions

Office Home 2024

Office Home 2024 costs $179.99 once for one Mac or PC and includes classic Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. It is a purchase of that specific release, not a “lifetime subscription”: there is no included entitlement to the next major version and no Microsoft 365 subscription storage or services. Microsoft provides security updates, but not the continuous feature upgrades included with Microsoft 365.

Office Home & Business 2024

This one-computer perpetual edition includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. Microsoft’s inspected comparison page did not expose a current U.S. price, so verify checkout before buying. Confirm Microsoft’s license terms for commercial use rather than assuming any similarly named edition is suitable for a business.

Is Microsoft Office free on a Mac?

Yes, for basic browser work. Microsoft 365 for the web provides browser versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint with a Microsoft account. Downloadable Mac apps may be free to install, but full desktop editing and premium capabilities generally require an eligible license or subscription. A school, employer or existing family invitation may already provide that license, so check those accounts before paying.

Which is cheaper over time?

Using only Microsoft’s listed prices, Office Home 2024 divided by Microsoft 365 Personal’s annual price is $179.99 ÷ $99.99, or about 1.8 years. The monthly comparison is about 18 months ($179.99 ÷ $9.99), but annual subscription billing is cheaper. Over three years, Personal totals $299.97, while Home 2024 remains $179.99 if you keep the same release. That arithmetic excludes tax, discounts, future price changes and the value of OneDrive, multi-device access, support and feature updates.

Family costs only $30 more per year than Personal. Once a second person needs the desktop apps, Family can cost less than two Personal subscriptions; sharing among six people lowers the listed annual software cost to about $21.67 each.

Which option should you buy?

  • One person: Choose Microsoft 365 Personal if you need installed apps, Outlook, multiple devices, storage or current features. Choose Home 2024 if one computer and a stable release are enough.
  • Two or more household users: Choose Microsoft 365 Family, especially when separate accounts and OneDrive storage matter.
  • Student or occasional user: Start with the free web apps or verify school access. Buy Personal when desktop features or offline work are essential.
  • Freelancer or business user: Compare Microsoft 365 with Office Home & Business 2024 and confirm commercial-use rights. Do not assume Home 2024 covers business work.
  • Outlook required: Use Microsoft 365 or Home & Business 2024; do not assume Home 2024 includes Outlook.
  • No recurring billing: Home 2024 is the perpetual-license choice, provided one computer and its fixed feature set meet your needs.
  • Advanced AI is the priority: Consider Premium only if its expanded Copilot offering justifies the additional $70 per year over Family.

Mac compatibility, offline use and activation

Microsoft’s current Office 2024 requirements support Intel and Apple-silicon Macs with 4 GB RAM, 10 GB available disk space, a 1280×800 display and one of the three most recent macOS versions. Check your exact macOS version at Microsoft’s requirements page before purchasing.

Both subscription and one-time editions require internet access for installation and activation, plus periodic licensing checks. Microsoft 365 apps can enter reduced-functionality mode after at least 31 days without a connection. OneDrive files also need local synchronization for dependable offline access. Office 2024 is not completely internet-independent despite its one-time price.

Standalone apps and alternatives

Microsoft confirms that standalone Word, Excel and PowerPoint versions can be purchased for Mac or PC. Current standalone prices were not established here, so check the Microsoft Store listing. A single app makes sense only when you genuinely need one program and do not value the subscription’s storage or other applications.

  • Apple iWork (Pages, Numbers and Keynote) is free and Apple-native, but compatibility with complex Office files can vary.
  • Google Docs, Sheets and Slides excel at browser collaboration, but are less suitable for advanced Excel or exact desktop Office compatibility.
  • LibreOffice is a free, open-source desktop suite; complex Microsoft documents may not render identically.
  • Microsoft’s web apps are the closest free option for users who want Microsoft formats and interface.

How to avoid a costly purchase mistake

  1. Check whether school, employer or family sharing already supplies Microsoft 365.
  2. Confirm your Mac model and macOS version meet Microsoft’s requirements.
  3. Decide whether you need Outlook, commercial rights, OneDrive or multiple devices.
  4. Buy from Microsoft or an authorized retailer; be wary of unusually cheap keys and vague “lifetime” listings.
  5. Read the edition name carefully: Home 2024 and Home & Business 2024 are not interchangeable.
