Re:

How Much Does It Cost to Run a Fan All Night? An Expert’s Estimate

A fan’s overnight cost depends on its wattage, runtime and electricity rate. Here’s how to calculate it, plus a worked example and an expert’s attributed monthly estimate.

There is no single overnight price for every fan: the cost depends on its wattage, how long it runs and your electricity rate. Use (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours × price per kWh to calculate your own estimate. At National Energy Action’s illustrative rate of 25.7p per kWh, a 50-watt fan running for eight hours costs about 10.3p.

Calculate the cost for your fan

Electricity is billed by the kilowatt-hour (kWh). A kilowatt is 1,000 watts, so a 1 kW appliance running for one hour uses 1 kWh, as National Energy Action explains in its electricity-cost explainer. To estimate a fan’s running cost, use:

Cost = (fan watts ÷ 1,000) × hours used × electricity price per kWh

Check the fan’s label or manual for its power rating, and use the unit rate on your electricity bill. If the fan has different speed settings, its input power may vary by setting; the rated wattage alone may not describe every mode.

Worked example: 50 W for eight hours

National Energy Action’s fan-cost examples use an illustrative electricity rate of 25.7p/kWh. At that rate, a 50 W fan running for eight hours uses 0.4 kWh and costs about 10.3p: 50 ÷ 1,000 × 8 × 25.7p. Thirty nights at the same duration and rate would total about £3.08. These are calculations from the stated inputs, not a current universal tariff or a personal bill forecast. Your actual cost changes with your rate, fan and runtime.

At the same illustrative rate, NEA estimates a 20 W small desk fan at 0.5p an hour, a 50 W pedestal fan at 1.3p an hour and a 75 W large fan at 1.9p an hour. See its fan-cost examples. The figures are rounded, so multiplying an hourly figure may not match an independently calculated total exactly.

Why an expert gives a higher monthly estimate

Chris Madikian, Electrical Expert at The Local Electrician, told T3 that a fan left running can add £10–£20 to monthly electricity bills during summer. He also said the actual cost depends on the fan’s power rating and the number of hours it runs each day. T3’s article does not specify a particular fan, daily runtime or electricity tariff behind that estimate, so treat it as Madikian’s broad estimate—not a guaranteed cost for your household. The T3 article was published on 12 July 2025.

How fan type and settings affect electricity use

Madikian’s wattage ranges, as reported by T3 in 2025, are 25–45 W for small desk fans, 50–100 W for pedestal fans and up to 110 W for tower fans. NEA’s separate examples use 20 W, 50 W and 75 W for a small desk, pedestal and large fan respectively. These are category-level examples from different sources, not a substitute for checking the rating of your own appliance.

Madikian also said that running a fan on its highest setting can use up to 40% more electricity than running it on its lowest setting. That is his general claim as quoted by T3, not a model-by-model test result. If your fan has a timer or sleep mode, setting it to switch off after you fall asleep can reduce the time it runs; any saving depends on how long it would otherwise operate and the fan’s power use.

Compare costs without guessing

If you are comparing fans you already own or are considering, compare their stated or measured input watts at the speed you expect to use, along with any timer or sleep controls. Then calculate each one using the same electricity rate and number of hours. The available figures do not establish that replacing an older fan will pay for itself.

The large LED display and remote control make it intuitive and convenient to control the oscillation angles and modes even from far away.
  • 𝑼𝒍𝒕𝒓𝒂 𝑸𝒖𝒊𝒆𝒕 𝑫𝑪 𝑴𝒐𝒕𝒐𝒓: Don't sacrifice performance for quietness. It operates quietly at low speeds, making it suitable for bedrooms and workspaces. Thanks to the DREO brushless DC motor combined with turbine-style blade technology, the fan helps circulate air efficiently throughout the room.

Madikian told T3 that fans made before 2018 often lack newer energy-efficient motors and that an older fan might cost twice as much to run as a newer equivalent. The article passage does not provide a comparative test to establish that as a universal result, so check the actual ratings rather than assuming an older fan always costs twice as much.
