An eligible U.S. adult renewing by mail with Form DS-82 pays $130 for a passport book, $30 for a passport card, or $160 for both. Expedited processing adds $60 per application. Optional 1–3-day delivery of a newly issued passport book adds $26.87. These are State Department charges; postage to mail your application is separate.
What a passport renewal costs
The current U.S. Department of State adult renewal instructions, last updated October 1, 2026, list these fees for applicants eligible to renew with Form DS-82:
| Renewal choice or service | Fee | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Passport book | $130 | Adult DS-82 renewal |
| Passport card | $30 | Adult DS-82 renewal |
| Passport book and card | $160 | Both documents in one renewal |
| Expedited processing | +$60 | Per application |
| 1–3-day delivery | +$26.87 | Delivery of an issued passport book to a U.S. mailing address; not available for cards |
| Acceptance-facility fee | Not charged for a routine DS-82 mail renewal | Applies to applications submitted at acceptance facilities |
See the State Department’s mail-renewal instructions for current fees, payment directions, mailing routes, and processing estimates.
Example totals
- Routine book renewal: $130, plus the postage you choose to send the application.
- Expedited book renewal: $190, plus applicant-paid postage.
- Expedited book renewal with 1–3-day delivery after issuance: $216.87, plus applicant-paid postage.
- Routine card renewal: $30, plus applicant-paid postage.
- Routine renewal of both book and card: $160, plus applicant-paid postage.
These totals assume DS-82 eligibility and include only the listed government services. They do not include photos or other personal expenses, for which the official fee materials do not state one fixed amount.

Do you have to pay the $35 acceptance fee again?
No, not for a standard adult renewal submitted by mail using Form DS-82. The State Department’s FAQ, last updated May 18, 2026, distinguishes the passport application fee paid for a DS-82 renewal from the acceptance-facility fee charged when an application is submitted at an acceptance facility. The FAQ is at Passport Services FAQ.
That distinction is about the application route: the $35 fee is not an added charge for an eligible mail renewal. If you are applying in person rather than renewing by mail, check the current fee instructions for your specific application process.

Book or card: which renewal should you pay for?
A passport card costs less, but it is not a substitute for a passport book for international air travel. The State Department’s 2026 fee chart says a card is valid for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean, and not valid for international air travel. See the U.S. Passport Fees – 2026.
- Choose a book if you need to travel internationally by air.
- Choose a card if your expected eligible travel is by land or sea to the listed destinations and you do not need international air travel.
- Choose both if you want the card’s land-and-sea convenience as well as a book for international flights.
Expedited processing and faster delivery are different charges
The $60 expedited-service fee pays the Department of State to process the application faster. The $26.87 fee is for delivery of an issued passport book within 1–3 days to a U.S. mailing address. Paying for expedited processing does not mean the application is mailed to the Department overnight, and faster application shipping is not the same as faster processing or faster delivery of the issued document.

The Department’s current mail-renewal page lists routine processing at 4–6 weeks and expedited processing at 2–3 weeks, excluding mailing time. Processing estimates can change; check the current State Department estimates before applying. The mailing time for your application and delivery time for the new document are separate from those processing estimates.

Postage to send the application
You pay for the postage used to send your renewal, and that cost depends on your chosen mailing service. The State Department specifies USPS mailing routes that vary by state and service speed, but applicant postage is not one fixed government fee. Postal employees should not charge the $35 acceptance-facility fee for a mail renewal.

Application materials and name changes
Eligible adults renewing by mail must send their most recent passport and completed application. If your current name differs from the name on your passport, the instructions call for a certified name-change document. The official fee materials do not set one universal price for photos or other personal costs.
Returning your old passport
Your old passport is returned separately and may arrive up to two weeks after your new passport. Allow for that additional mailing time when planning around travel.
