How Much Do Microsoft Employees Earn? From Entry-Level to Distinguished Engineer

A reported Microsoft guideline shows base-pay ranges from about $83,000 at Level 57 to $408,000 at Level 70, but equity, bonuses, location and vesting determine actual compensation.

Short answer: A reported Microsoft compensation guideline put U.S. engineering base salary at roughly $83,000–$124,600 for Level 57 and $272,000–$408,000 for Level 70. Equity, bonuses and signing awards can add substantially more, especially at senior levels. Levels.fyi’s submitted U.S. software-engineer data, updated during 2026, shows reported total compensation of about $161,000 at Level 59 and up to $1.08 million at Level 70.

Those figures are not guaranteed salaries. The detailed level-by-level numbers came from a guideline reportedly obtained by Business Insider and republished by Neowin, not from a public Microsoft compensation table. Microsoft says U.S. base-pay ranges depend on the employee’s primary work location and that eligible roles may also receive bonuses, merit increases and stock.

What “Microsoft salary” includes

A Microsoft offer can contain several different forms of compensation:

  • Base salary: Fixed cash paid through payroll.
  • Annual bonus: Performance-based cash, commonly expressed as a target percentage of base salary. A target is not necessarily a guaranteed payment.
  • Annual stock award: Equity granted or refreshed for an employee. A quoted value may be annualized and may depend on the grant’s vesting schedule and Microsoft’s share price.
  • On-hire stock award: Initial equity used in recruiting. It is generally vested over time rather than paid as immediate cash.
  • Signing bonus: Cash paid under the offer’s terms. Some agreements require repayment if the employee leaves before a specified date.
  • Total compensation: A source-specific calculation that usually combines base salary, an annualized equity value and expected or target bonus.

Consequently, a $1 million stock award should not be described as $1 million of salary received in one year. Grant-date value, vesting, share-price movement and taxes all affect what an employee actually receives.

How Microsoft engineering levels map to career stages

The reported guideline associated the following levels with broad technical-career stages:

  • Levels 57–59: Entry-level and early-career engineers.
  • Levels 60–62: Established or intermediate engineers.
  • Levels 63–64: Senior engineers.
  • Level 65: Principal engineer.
  • Levels 66–67: Higher-principal or senior-principal scope.
  • Levels 68–69: Partner-level roles.
  • Level 70: Distinguished engineer.

This is an approximate mapping from the reported guideline, not a universal public Microsoft title dictionary. Titles vary by organization, discipline and job family, and level decisions depend on scope, experience, interviews and business need. The table does not establish a rule that every new graduate must enter at one level or that every Level 70 employee holds exactly the same title.

Reported Microsoft engineering pay guideline

The figures below were reported by Neowin from a pay guideline it said was obtained by Business Insider. “Main” and “high” are separate reported base-pay ranges, associated in the report with different labor markets, including the Seattle-area headquarters market and higher-paying San Francisco-area roles. They are guideline ranges and award limits, not typical or guaranteed offers.

What entry-level engineers can expect

Levels 57–59 show relatively modest initial equity and signing-bonus ranges compared with senior levels, while base pay remains the most visible component. A Level 59 offer can still differ greatly from another Level 59 offer because location, candidate background, role scope and recruiting competition affect the package.

Initial stock is normally subject to vesting. Ask whether the quoted amount is the grant-date value, how many shares it represents, when shares vest and whether the company provides refresh grants. A headline grant is not the same as the amount that becomes sellable during the first year.

Senior and principal compensation

At Levels 63–66, the reported base ranges rise, and the potential stock and bonus amounts become more material. The guideline shows bonus targets reaching 40% at Levels 65 and 66 and annual-stock-award ceilings rising as high as $200,000 at Level 66.

These levels reflect broader technical influence, not simply a fixed number of years at the company. When comparing offers, evaluate the scope the hiring team expects you to perform at—not only the title—and whether the level leaves room for a realistic promotion path.

Partner and distinguished-engineer packages

Levels 68–70 have the widest spreads between ordinary-looking base pay and very large potential equity and bonus awards. The reported Level 70 row lists on-hire stock of $827,001–$1.9 million, annual stock awards up to $1.476 million and bonus targets up to 90%. Those are ceilings or ranges in a reported guideline, not what every distinguished engineer receives.

Distinguished engineer is a rare, high-scope technical role. It should not be treated as an automatic next step after senior engineer, and the data does not establish a typical Level 70 total compensation figure.

Why total compensation grows faster than base pay

Base salary generally makes up the largest share of lower-level compensation. At higher levels, three forces can widen the gap between base and total compensation:

  • Equity grants and refresh awards become much larger.
  • Bonus targets represent a larger percentage of base pay.
  • Recruiting packages may include substantial initial stock.

Stock-price changes can make realized compensation differ substantially from the grant-date valuation. For example, a hypothetical offer with a $200,000 base salary, a 30% target bonus and $100,000 of annualized stock would have an illustrative target package of $360,000 before taxes. That arithmetic is not a Microsoft prediction: the bonus may pay above or below target, and the stock value may change before or during vesting.

Location changes the applicable range

Microsoft’s official U.S. corporate-pay page says base-pay ranges vary by work location and that the applicable range depends on the candidate’s primary work location. A role in Redmond or elsewhere in Washington may therefore use a different range from a comparable role in San Francisco or another high-cost labor market.

Remote work does not make the highest published range automatic. The location recorded for the job and the employer’s pay-zone rules determine which range applies. A nationwide job-posting range is not a promise that every candidate can receive its maximum, and relocating to a higher-paying market does not by itself guarantee the top of that market’s band. The figures above are U.S.-focused; they cannot be used to infer compensation in other countries.

Leaked guideline versus current market-reported data

These sources answer different questions:

Source What it measures Useful for Important limitation
Reported Microsoft guideline Internal ranges and award limits by level Understanding how an offer may be structured Not a public Microsoft release and not evidence of typical realized pay
Levels.fyi Employee- or offer-submitted total-compensation records Benchmarking observed outcomes Self-selection, uneven samples, changing stock values and unverifiable individual submissions

Levels.fyi’s U.S. Microsoft software-engineer page reports approximately $161,000 a year at Level 59 at the low end of its displayed range and about $1.08 million at Level 70 at the high end. It breaks compensation into base salary, stock and bonus. Those observations should be treated as a market reality check, not a replacement for an internal offer band. The page’s underlying data and the 2025 reported guideline also come from different periods and methodologies.

How to evaluate a Microsoft offer

  1. Confirm the level. Ask whether the offer is Level 59, 60, 63, 65 or another level and how the level relates to the role’s expected scope.
  2. Check base salary against the correct location. Identify the pay zone for your primary work location, including any remote-work arrangement.
  3. Clarify the bonus. Determine whether the percentage is a target, a maximum or a guaranteed amount, and ask how performance affects payment.
  4. Read the equity terms. Request the grant-date value, share count, vesting schedule, first-year vesting amount and treatment of future refresh grants.
  5. Separate initial stock from annual stock. An on-hire award may be a one-time recruiting grant, while annual stock may refer to a refresh or an annualized value.
  6. Check signing-bonus repayment rules. The offer letter should state whether repayment applies if you leave early.
  7. Model stock-price risk. Calculate your budget using a conservative share-price assumption rather than treating the grant value as cash.
  8. Ask about promotion expectations. A higher starting level may bring more compensation, but the job must also match the scope at which you are expected to perform.
  9. Review what is excluded. Benefits, retirement contributions, taxes and other non-cash items may not be included in a headline total-compensation figure.

Which Microsoft jobs does this data cover?

The level table is primarily about U.S. technical and engineering roles. It should not be generalized to every Microsoft employee. Product managers, program managers, designers, researchers, sales staff, corporate functions, hourly or retail workers, support staff, contingent workers and employees outside the United States may use different job structures and pay practices. Microsoft’s official pay page describes compensation as role- and location-dependent, while the Levels.fyi page specifically covers software engineers.
