There is no verified price for Elon Musk to buy all of TikTok, and the reporting cited here does not show that he made or completed a purchase. The clearest public figure was about $14 billion for a planned U.S. TikTok company, cited by Vice President JD Vance in September 2025. The White House did not explain how it was calculated. Analyst estimates varied sharply depending on whether TikTok’s recommendation algorithm was included.
What does the $14 billion figure cover?
Reuters reported in September 2025 that JD Vance assigned an approximately $14 billion value to the planned U.S. company. The White House did not explain the calculation, so this is best understood as an attributed public estimate—not a disclosed sale price, confirmed offer, or valuation for worldwide TikTok. Reuters reported the estimate and the lack of an explained calculation.
The distinction matters because “TikTok” can refer to the U.S. operation, the global platform, or ByteDance, its parent company. Those are different assets, and their reported figures cannot be treated as interchangeable.
How did estimates change with the algorithm?
Analyst Dan Ives of Wedbush gave the Associated Press two markedly different scenarios in January 2025. Without the recommendation algorithm, his estimate was $40 billion to $50 billion. With the algorithm, he said the value could be well over $100 billion and potentially reach $200 billion in a best-case scenario. These were analyst estimates, not bids or completed transaction prices. The Associated Press reported Ives’s estimates and the algorithm distinction.

| Figure | What it refers to | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $14 billion | Planned U.S. TikTok company | Approximate figure attributed to JD Vance in September 2025; calculation not explained by the White House, according to Reuters. |
| $40 billion–$50 billion | TikTok scenario without its recommendation algorithm | Dan Ives’s estimate reported by AP in January 2025; not a transaction price. |
| Well over $100 billion; potentially $200 billion in a best case | TikTok scenario with its recommendation algorithm | Dan Ives’s estimate reported by AP in January 2025; not a transaction price. |
| More than $330 billion | ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company | Reuters reported a 2025 employee share buyback valuation based on people familiar with the plan; this is not a valuation of TikTok’s U.S. business. Reuters on ByteDance’s valuation. |
The algorithm is not a minor add-on in these estimates: it is the reason the scenario values diverge so widely. But the available reporting does not establish that unrestricted transfer of the algorithm was available, or spell out licensing terms. A figure that assumes algorithm access should therefore be read as a scenario, not as proof that a buyer could acquire it on those terms.
Did Musk actually try to buy TikTok?
The cited reporting does not establish a confirmed Musk bid or purchase. In January 2025, AP reported that TikTok called a report of a possible sale scenario involving Musk “pure fiction.” The same report noted ByteDance had repeatedly said it did not plan to sell. AP’s report describes the scenario and TikTok’s response.

There is a useful scale comparison, but not a valuation shortcut: AP cited Musk’s 2022 purchase of Twitter, later renamed X, for $44 billion. That historical transaction does not establish TikTok’s value or Musk’s current ability to pay.
What changed with TikTok’s U.S. venture in 2026?
On January 23, 2026, TikTok announced that TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC had been established as a majority-American-owned entity. The company said its mandate was to secure U.S. user data, apps, and the algorithm through data-privacy and cybersecurity measures. That is the company’s description of its mandate, not independent verification of the safeguards’ effectiveness. TikTok’s announcement.

The Washington Post reported Oracle, Silver Lake, and MGX each held 15%, ByteDance retained 19.9%, and other investors held the remainder. This was a U.S. venture structure, not a purchase of global TikTok by Musk, and the cited report did not state a sale price for all of TikTok. The Washington Post reported the ownership structure.

If the question is about a publicly stated figure for the planned U.S. company, the answer is about $14 billion, as attributed to Vance in September 2025, with no disclosed calculation in the cited Reuters account. If the question is about possible TikTok valuations under different algorithm assumptions, the AP-reported estimates ranged from $40 billion–$50 billion without the algorithm to well over $100 billion, potentially $200 billion in a best case, with it. Neither set of figures establishes what Musk would pay—or that he could buy the global platform at all.
