Microsoft Cashback can reward eligible purchases from participating retailers, but an offer must be available to your account, activated before shopping and tracked through checkout. After the retailer reports the purchase, Microsoft reviews it; completed rewards can then be transferred using a redemption service available in your location.
What is Microsoft Cashback?
Microsoft Cashback is a free rewards program tied to shopping offers surfaced through supported Microsoft services. Microsoft describes it as a way to earn cash back at participating retailers through products such as Bing and Microsoft Edge in its Cashback feature page and Services Agreement. It is not automatic cash back on every purchase: an offer has to apply to the retailer and items or services you buy, and the purchase must be attributed to that offer.
Offers may appear in Bing, Edge, MSN/Microsoft Start, Outlook.com, Copilot and certain mobile apps, according to Microsoft’s Cashback FAQ. What you see depends on your account, location and the offers currently available; there is no single retailer list or payout route that applies to everyone.
Who can join and what do you need?

- Be at least 18 and a lawful resident of a participating territory.
- Use an active personal Microsoft account, not a work or school account.
- Remain enrolled in Microsoft Rewards and enroll in Cashback.
- Keep cookies enabled and maintain an active account with an eligible redemption service.

How do you earn a Cashback reward?
- Sign in and enroll. Use the eligible personal Microsoft account you intend to shop with, keep Microsoft Rewards enrollment active, and enroll in Cashback.
- Find an available offer. Look for a Cashback offer in a supported Microsoft service. Read its merchant-specific terms, including eligible products, categories and exclusions.
- Activate the offer and follow its link. Start shopping through the offer’s Microsoft-provided route before placing the order.
- Complete checkout in the same session. Avoid opening another offer link or shopping tool between activation and checkout. Keep cookies enabled; ad blockers, privacy tools and extensions can interrupt tracking.
- Wait for merchant reporting and Microsoft’s review. A reward is not necessarily confirmed at checkout. Microsoft says most rewards can take up to 90 days to appear. Travel-related purchases may not be assessed until after the trip is complete.
- Transfer the available balance. Once rewards are ready, transfer the full available balance to an eligible redemption service shown for your account.
Which purchases qualify—and what are the limits?
Each offer has its own rules. Retailer, store, product, service and category exclusions can differ, so a purchase from a participating merchant is not automatically eligible. Microsoft’s terms explicitly say, “Gift certificate and gift card purchases are not eligible for a Microsoft Cashback reward.”

The reward is calculated from the amount the merchant reports, and the calculation may exclude taxes, fees, shipping, gift wrapping, warranties, discounts or credits. Returns and cancellations can also affect eligibility or the reward amount. Coupon-code purchases are excluded by many offers; follow the individual offer terms rather than assuming every code is disallowed or accepted.
Microsoft’s Cashback Terms & Conditions, last updated August 26, 2024, state maximum rewards of US$200 per calendar month and US$1,000 per calendar year, or local-currency equivalents. An individual offer may set a lower transaction limit.

When do rewards arrive, and how do you redeem them?
Microsoft’s feature FAQ says rewards are usually available within 30 to 90 days and some purchases, including travel, can take longer. The terms say most rewards may take up to 90 days to appear and travel eligibility is determined after travel is completed. This is the confirmation period, not a promise that a transfer will take the same amount of time.
Microsoft’s feature page describes transferring a completed balance to a linked PayPal account. The terms say eligible redemption services vary by location and require transferring the entire available balance. Check the redemption choices displayed in your account before relying on PayPal or another particular method.

Why might a purchase fail to earn Cashback?
A missing or declined reward can result from an offer rule, a tracking break or an eligibility issue. Microsoft’s FAQ and terms identify causes including:
- The product, order or retailer did not qualify, or the offer had expired or was not available to your account.
- You were not signed in, enrolled or activated the offer before buying.
- Too much time passed between activation and checkout, or you left the offer route for another link or shopping tool.
- Cookies were disabled, or an ad blocker, privacy setting, extension, security software or malware interfered with tracking.
- A coupon code or another third-party reward made the purchase ineligible under that offer’s terms.
- The merchant did not report the purchase, a technical failure prevented verification, or Microsoft flagged an account for suspected fraud or compliance reasons.
Start by reviewing the offer exclusions, your account and Cashback history, and any estimated credit date shown there. If Microsoft provides a missing-purchase inquiry through its support route, submit it with the order details. A claim is not guaranteed to be restored: the terms say merchant reporting or verification failures can prevent credit.

What should you know before linking a payment card?
Some accounts may be offered optional card-linked Cashback for qualifying in-store purchases at participating merchants. It is not available to every account. Microsoft’s terms exclude corporate and purchasing cards, many prepaid or government-administered cards, and some healthcare cards. PIN-based debit purchases and some transactions routed through digital wallets may not track as eligible.
Linking a card has a privacy trade-off. Under Microsoft’s terms, card-linked participation authorizes transaction data to be shared among Microsoft, program service providers, merchants and payment networks for eligibility checks, support, fraud analysis, program operation and personalized offers. Review the current terms before linking a card if you do not want that transaction-data sharing.
Can an inactive account lose part of its balance?
Microsoft’s Cashback Terms & Conditions, last updated August 26, 2024, describe a possible maintenance deduction of up to US$5 per month, where permitted by law. It applies if the account has had neither a reward earned nor a balance transfer during the previous six months, and deductions cannot exceed the remaining available balance. Check the current terms for any changes before relying on an old balance.
