Short answer: Meta says it uses public Facebook and Instagram content, public profile information, and interactions with Meta AI to develop and improve generative-AI systems. It says ordinary private messages between people are not used to train AI unless someone shares them with Meta AI. A formal objection is available mainly to people in the European Union and United Kingdom; Meta’s current U.S. notice does not describe an equivalent general AI-training opt-out. Last checked: August 16, 2026. Interface labels and eligibility can change.
What “using personal data for AI” means
These are different activities, and Meta’s broad privacy explanations do not mean every item it collects enters the same model or dataset:
- Training: teaching a model patterns from large collections of text, images, audio, video and other information.
- Fine-tuning and improvement: refining a model with additional examples, feedback, evaluations or interactions.
- Inference: processing a prompt to generate a response.
- Personalization: tailoring responses, recommendations, experiences or advertising.
- Safety and moderation: detecting abuse, testing safeguards and evaluating model outputs.
Meta says deleting source information does not instantly change a model that may already have learned from it, although deleted information is not supposed to be used for future training. See Meta’s explanation of how generative-AI models work.
What information does Meta say it uses?
| Data category | Examples | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Public posts and comments | Public Facebook or Instagram posts, comments and audio | Meta’s AI materials focus on relevant public information, including adult users in the programs described. |
| Public photos, videos and captions | Images, videos and accompanying text | A public post may contain another person’s likeness or personal details. |
| Public profile information | Name, username and profile picture | Visibility matters; this is not a claim that every profile field trains every model. |
| Meta-AI interactions | Prompts, replies, content sent to AI and related metadata | Treat anything deliberately sent to Meta AI as potentially used for improvement. |
| Ordinary private messages | Messages to friends and family | Meta says these are not used to train AI unless someone shares them with Meta AI. |
| Other sources | Publicly available, licensed, partner, vendor or third-party data | Not all such information is user-generated Meta content. |
| Device and activity information | Device signals, cookies and product interactions | Meta describes these broadly; it does not say every signal trains a generative model. |
Meta’s overview is at facebook.com/privacy/genai; its general data categories are explained at facebook.com/privacy/explanation and facebook.com/privacy/policy. A company filing also describes combinations of public, licensed and product data, including public Facebook and Instagram posts and content from chats with Meta AI: Meta’s filing.

Are private Facebook, Instagram, Messenger or WhatsApp messages used?
According to Meta, ordinary private messages between people are not used to train its AI unless someone in the conversation chooses to share those messages with a Meta AI feature. A private conversation can therefore become AI-relevant when a participant asks Meta AI to summarize, rewrite, translate or analyze text, forwards an image or document, or invokes AI inside a private group or chat.
Business chats can involve a business’s own AI system and separate terms. Metadata and the fact that someone interacted with AI may also be treated separately from the ordinary content of a private conversation. Meta’s European explanation says messages people choose to share with AI features may be used for training or improvement: Meta’s April 2025 announcement.
What about minors’ public posts?
Meta’s European announcement says public data from EU accounts belonging to people under 18 is not being used for training under that program. Meta’s Privacy Center describes public information from accounts of people aged 18 or older. These statements are regional and program-specific, not a universal guarantee for every product, country or AI process.
Can you opt out?
European Union and United Kingdom
Meta provides an objection process for certain processing based on legitimate interests or public-interest tasks. It is not simply a worldwide settings switch and Meta may ask why the processing affects your particular situation. Meta says an accepted objection means it will not use your public information from Meta products or your interactions with Meta AI for future development and improvement of generative-AI models. Users who already submitted an objection do not need to submit another, according to Meta’s Privacy Center.

United States
Meta’s U.S. regional notice, effective May 23, 2025, lists rights that can vary by state, including access, deletion, correction and opting out of targeted advertising. It does not establish a general right to object specifically to generative-AI training equivalent to the EU/UK process. Do not submit an EU/UK form expecting it to create a U.S. AI-training opt-out. The U.S. notice is at facebook.com/privacy/policies/uso.
Elsewhere
Check your country version of Meta’s Privacy Center and privacy notice. Do not assume EU or UK rights apply; use whatever access, deletion, objection or restriction rights local law provides.

What an objection does—and does not—do
Future model development
Meta says an accepted objection stops the specified use of your public information and Meta-AI interactions for future development and improvement of generative-AI models.
Existing models
Do not treat an objection as guaranteed “untraining.” Meta says a model does not change immediately when source information is deleted. The regulator’s discussion of this issue is available at Hamburg’s data-protection authority statement.
Other processing
An AI-development objection does not delete your account or original posts, stop targeted advertising, end safety, security, legal or fraud-prevention processing, remove you from another person’s post, or prevent every use by Meta or third parties. Meta’s privacy policy also says AI interactions began to be used to personalize experiences and ads in an update dated December 16, 2025; that is a separate question from model training.
Ways to reduce exposure everywhere
- Set future Facebook and Instagram posts to friends-only or a narrower audience.
- Review older public posts, comments, photos, captions and profile fields; change their audience or remove them where available.
- Do not send confidential documents, medical or financial details, unpublished creative work or identifiable photos to Meta AI.
- Avoid invoking AI in sensitive family, work or group conversations.
- Review camera, microphone, contact and location permissions for the feature you actually use.
- Use Meta’s account, privacy and data-access tools to inspect or delete information where available.
These measures reduce exposure; they do not guarantee that information already collected or used will disappear from every system. Changing your settings also cannot control another person’s public post containing your image or information.

Viral claims and common mistakes
- A copy-and-paste “Goodbye Meta AI” or “I do not consent” status is not an authenticated legal request and does not change Meta’s terms. See Time’s fact-check.
- “Meta trains on all private messages” is broader than Meta’s stated position.
- Making an account private is exposure reduction, not the EU/UK objection process.
- Deleting a post is not the same as removing information from a trained model.
- Reporting an AI response that contains personal information is different from objecting to future AI-development processing.
- “Meta AI” covers multiple models, features and legal purposes; business AI products may have separate practices.
Frequently asked questions
Does making Instagram private stop AI training?
No. It can reduce future public exposure, but it is not a formal guarantee that previously collected information is removed or that every AI-related process stops.
Does deleting a post remove it from a model?
Not immediately. Meta says deletion does not instantly change a model that may already have learned from the source, although deleted information is not supposed to be used for future training.
Can a U.S. user opt out of Meta AI training?
Meta’s current U.S. notice does not describe a general AI-training objection equivalent to the EU/UK process. U.S. residents can use applicable state rights such as access, deletion, correction and targeted-advertising opt-out.
Do I need to submit an EU/UK objection more than once?
Meta’s Privacy Center says people who have already submitted an objection do not need to submit another.

Your own privacy settings cannot necessarily control another person’s public post. You may need to address that post through the platform’s reporting or removal processes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Meta use WhatsApp messages for AI training?
Meta’s stated rule concerns ordinary private messages: they are not used to train AI unless someone chooses to share them with Meta AI. WhatsApp features and business chats can have product-specific terms, so check the relevant in-app notice.
Is reporting an AI response the same as opting out?
No. Reporting a response containing personal information addresses that output; an EU/UK objection concerns specified future processing for AI development and improvement.
Does opting out stop ads?
No. An AI-development objection is not a targeted-advertising opt-out and does not delete your account.

The Bottom Line
If you live in the EU or UK, use Meta’s official Privacy Center objection and keep the confirmation. In the United States and elsewhere, no equivalent general AI-training switch is established in the cited notices, so limit public visibility and never send sensitive material to Meta AI. An objection is designed to limit future specified use—not to untrain models instantly.
