Recommended Free Tools
There is no fixed number of Southwest Rapid Rewards points that guarantees a free flight. The points price varies by itinerary and fare, so search your exact route and dates on Southwest.com or in the Southwest app to see the current price. Southwest says that price can change until your booking is confirmed.
How to check the points price for your flight
- Sign in to your Rapid Rewards account on Southwest.com or in the Southwest app.
- Search for your origin, destination, and travel dates.
- Review the available fares in points, along with each itinerary’s schedule and fare type.
- Check the points price again before confirming the booking; it may change before confirmation.
Southwest’s program terms say points can be redeemed for any available seat on any flight booked through Southwest. That does not mean every flight will be available at a points price you prefer; the live search results show what is currently offered. See Southwest’s Rapid Rewards terms and conditions.
Why Southwest flights cost different amounts of points
The points needed depend on factors that include the destination, travel date and time, demand, fare type, and redemption rate. Southwest’s 2026 Form 10-K says reward needs are based on the base fare and a multiplier, and that the airline introduced variable redemption rates across higher- and lower-demand flights in 2025. As a result, a points estimate from another route or date is not a reliable price for your trip. See Southwest’s booking information and the 2026 Form 10-K.
What to compare before booking
If you are considering more than one itinerary, compare the options for the same number of passengers and the same travel dates. Points prices are itinerary-specific, so use the current results rather than assuming a standard points value.
#1 Best Overall
- Points price: Check the total shown for your passenger count.
- Schedule: Compare departure and arrival times and any connection details.
- Fare type: Review the conditions attached to each fare.
- Cash due: Check whether the option requires cash or other eligible payment in addition to points.
If you do not have enough points
Consider Cash + Points
Southwest’s Cash + Points option combines points with other eligible forms of payment. Options may start at 1,000 points, but that minimum is not available on every flight. The choices shown depend on the selected flight and the number of passengers. Review the specific offer in the booking flow rather than assuming it is available for your itinerary. See Southwest’s Cash + Points information.
Compare the cost of buying points
Members can purchase points through their account or during flight booking. Purchased points do not count toward tier or Companion Pass qualification. Before buying, compare the purchase cost with the live flight price; a points purchase is not automatically a good deal. See Southwest’s points information.

How to earn Rapid Rewards points
Southwest lists flying, partner purchases, and its co-branded credit cards as ways to earn points. Its Rapid Rewards credit cards are issued by JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. Card terms and offers can change, so check current terms directly before applying; earning points through a card is separate from buying points. See Southwest’s ways to earn points.

Southwest reports that Rapid Rewards points do not expire. Its program terms also reserve the airline’s ability to amend, suspend, or change program rules, so review the current terms when planning a future redemption. See the Rapid Rewards terms and conditions.
