Lyft drivers should not treat their bank deposits, Lyft’s gross payment totals, and taxable business profit as the same number. A 1099-K can show gross ride payments that include fees and taxes, while profit depends on business income and expenses that are allowable under the rules and supported by records. For US drivers, gig income generally must be reported even if Lyft does not send a 1099.
This guide covers Lyft’s US tax documents and federal tax guidance. State and local tax rules, form thresholds, and worker-classification rules can differ, and the rules may change by tax year. It is a practical overview, not a personalized tax calculation or a legal conclusion about any driver’s status.
How to work out what you actually made
There is no reliable universal figure for a Lyft driver’s take-home pay: it depends on the driver’s rides, bonuses, vehicle costs, other business expenses, and taxes. Calculate your own result from your records rather than applying a generic hourly or annual estimate.
- Start with the records for the tax year. Get your Lyft Annual Summary and payment records, along with any tax forms Lyft issued. The summary can help reconcile activity, but it is not an official tax form.
- Separate ride payments from other earnings. Lyft’s summary describes ride payments as including gross rider payments, tips, toll reimbursements, cancellation fees, Lyft platform fees, and third-party fees and taxes. Non-ride earnings include bonuses and other non-ride compensation.
- Reconcile gross amounts with what you received. A gross payment total may include amounts that were not deposited to you, such as fees and taxes paid by riders. Compare tax forms and the Annual Summary with payment and bank records; do not assume a form’s gross amount equals your deposits.
- Identify business expenses and vehicle costs. Determine which expenses may be deductible for your circumstances and tax year, and keep the records that support them. Vehicle expenses require particular care because the applicable method and business-use share matter.
- Determine business profit using the applicable tax rules. Gross payments, deposits, and taxable profit are different measures. Your return should reflect business income and allowable expenses, not simply copy a deposit total or treat a 1099-K as profit.
What Lyft tax documents mean
Lyft says drivers can find tax documents in the Driver Dashboard > Tax Center. Drivers who had earnings receive an Annual Summary; Lyft describes it as a summary rather than an official tax form.
#1 Best Overall
| Document | What it covers | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Annual Summary | Lyft says it summarizes ride payments, non-ride earnings, related expenses, ride count, and online miles. | Use it to review Lyft activity and reconcile your records. It is not a substitute for an official tax form or your own records. |
| Form 1099-K | Lyft describes this as covering ride payments. The reported gross amount can include fees and taxes and may exceed the amount deposited to you. | Reconcile it with Lyft’s summary and your records. It reports gross payments; it does not calculate your net business profit or tax owed. |
| Form 1099-NEC | Lyft describes this as covering non-ride earnings, such as bonuses, when applicable issuance requirements are met. | Reconcile the non-ride earnings with the Annual Summary and your records. |
Lyft’s form thresholds vary by form and location and can change. Its current tax guidance describes a general 1099-K threshold based on rider gross payments and completed rides, lower thresholds in certain states, and a $600 threshold for non-ride earnings for Form 1099-NEC. Do not carry a threshold from an older tax year or another state into your own filing: check Lyft’s current tax information and Tax Center for the relevant year and location.
Do you have to report Lyft income if you did not get a 1099?
Yes. The IRS says gig income must be reported even if you do not receive an information return. Its guidance states: “You must report all income on your tax return, even if you don’t receive Forms 1099 from the businesses that pay you.” The absence of a 1099 does not remove the obligation to report income.

The IRS says people with net self-employment earnings of $400 or more from gig work generally must file a return. That is a general federal rule, not a determination of every person’s filing obligation: other income, deductions, and individual circumstances matter. Independent contractors may also need to make estimated tax payments during the year.
How federal taxes generally apply to Lyft work
For federal filing, IRS gig-work guidance identifies Form 1040, Schedule C, and Schedule SE among the forms used for self-employed gig work. A driver uses business records to determine income and allowable expenses; the information returns Lyft issues are items to reconcile, not a calculation of tax.

Which Lyft driver expenses may be deductible?
Lyft lists expenses that may be deductible, including platform fees, service fees, third-party fees and taxes, Express Pay fees, Express Drive rental fees, and tolls. It also discusses vehicle expense methods and common operating expenses. Whether a particular cost is deductible, and what portion is business-related, depends on the tax rules for the year and the driver’s facts and records; a list of possible expenses is not a guarantee that every driver can deduct every item.
Vehicle expenses: compare methods using your records
Lyft discusses standard mileage and actual vehicle expenses. Which method is appropriate depends on the applicable rules and your circumstances. Compare the methods using your business mileage and reliable records of vehicle costs for the relevant tax year; do not assume that a general example or another driver’s choice will produce the right result for you.

Keep evidence for income and expenses
The IRS advises gig workers to keep records of money received and expenses, save receipts, and use records when reporting income and claiming deductions. Retain Lyft forms and summaries and records adequate to support business income, mileage, and expenses. A paper mileage logbook is one option; a digital recordkeeping system may also help. A product’s recordkeeping function does not mean the IRS has approved or endorsed it.
Does Lyft’s contractor label settle your worker status?
No. Lyft’s US driver tax information describes drivers as independent contractors for its tax guidance, but the IRS says status depends on the actual relationship and facts, not only the label used. Classification tests also vary by legal context and jurisdiction. Lyft’s contractor description should not be treated as a universal legal conclusion for every driver or as a summary of state and local protections.
How the current federal tips deduction may affect drivers
An IRS Tax Tip published March 31, 2026 says a deduction for qualified tips is available for tax years 2025 through 2028, subject to eligibility requirements that include qualifying occupations. That does not establish that every Lyft driver’s tips qualify. Check current IRS rules and your own circumstances before claiming a deduction.
