Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA basic website can be online in a day or two, but a polished small-business site usually takes 2–6 weeks. A custom professional site often takes 6–12 weeks, while a complex ecommerce operation or web application can take several months.
Those ranges describe a complete project—not merely generating a first draft. Writing and approving content, testing forms, connecting a domain, configuring payments, and resolving revisions can take longer than assembling the pages.
Quick answer by website type
| Website type | Realistic planning range | Typical approach |
|---|---|---|
| One-page landing page | A few hours to 3 days | AI builder, template, or simple custom page |
| Personal site or portfolio | 1 day to 2 weeks | Builder or template-based CMS |
| Basic small-business site (3–10 pages) | 1–4 weeks | Builder, WordPress theme, Webflow, or freelancer |
| Professional custom marketing site | 6–12 weeks | Discovery, UX, custom design, development, and QA |
| Small online store | 2–8 weeks | Shopify, Wix, WooCommerce, or a similar platform |
| Large ecommerce site | 2–5 months | Catalog setup, payments, shipping, integrations, and testing |
| Custom web application | 3–12 months or more | Bespoke product development |
These are planning ranges, not guarantees. Wix describes everything from minutes for an AI-generated first version to one-to-six months for more involved projects; Shopify describes roughly one week to five months depending on complexity. See Wix’s timeline guide and Shopify’s process overview.
Build time is not the same as launch time
A site can be assembled in hours but take weeks to become genuinely launch-ready. A complete project commonly includes:
#1 Best Overall
- No programming skills required
- With 1 licence you can install the software on 2 computers and create as many sites as you wish
- 250 professional and customizable templates
- Import images and videos (including YouTube), editor for creating buttons
- Automatic HTML5 code generation + FTP engine for publishing your website
- Goals, audience, scope, and page planning
- Copy, photography, product data, and legal information
- Platform, hosting, domain, email, and analytics setup
- Wireframes, visual design, and mobile layouts
- Development, CMS configuration, forms, payments, and integrations
- SEO basics, accessibility checks, browser and device testing
- Review rounds, final approval, domain connection, redirects, and monitoring
Use four milestones when discussing a schedule: first draft, functional build, client-ready version, and public launch. “The site is finished” is ambiguous unless everyone agrees which milestone it means.
How long does it take to build a website yourself?
AI-generated website
An AI builder can produce an initial layout in minutes, but editing copy, replacing generic images, applying branding, configuring forms, checking mobile layouts, and testing links usually takes hours or several days. Wix describes this distinction in its AI and editor timeline guidance. WordPress.com also offers a guided AI builder; features and plan access are shown on its current pricing page.
AI accelerates the first draft; it does not verify factual claims, prices, legal wording, image rights, accessibility, or whether a form actually delivers messages.
Template-based builder
Allow one day to three weeks for a portfolio, brochure site, or service-business website when the template is close to the desired design, content is ready, page count is modest, and no unusual integrations are required. More customization, a second language, booking, or repeated revisions pushes the work toward the longer end.
Self-managed WordPress
A simple site can take several days to several weeks. A heavily customized site commonly takes 4–12 weeks or longer. Self-hosted WordPress adds hosting, theme and plugin selection, compatibility checks, backups, security, updates, mobile fixes, and maintenance. WordPress.com is a hosted service; self-hosted WordPress requires you to manage more of the technical stack.

DIY ecommerce
A small store may be ready in 2–8 weeks if products, images, shipping rules, tax settings, payment accounts, and policies are prepared. Product entry is a workstream in its own right: variants, collections, inventory, fulfillment, confirmation emails, and test orders all need checking.
How long does a professional website take?
A standard custom marketing site generally takes 6–12 weeks. Wix publishes an overall estimate of roughly two to five months for professional developer projects, while phase-based guidance from Resourcifi separates discovery, UX, design, content, development, testing, and launch (Wix; Resourcifi). The phases overlap, so their maximums should not simply be added together.
| Phase | Representative duration |
|---|---|
| Discovery, goals, and requirements | 1–3 weeks |
| Sitemap and information architecture | 1–3 weeks |
| Wireframes and user flows | 1–3 weeks |
| Visual design and prototype | 2–4 weeks |
| Copy, photography, and content preparation | 2–4 weeks |
| Development and integrations | 3–8 weeks |
| Testing and quality assurance | 1–3 weeks |
| Launch and DNS transition | 1 day to 2 weeks |
A practical 10-week small-business schedule
- Week 1—define: Set the business goal, target customer, primary conversion, pages, integrations, budget, launch date, decision-maker, and approval rules.
- Weeks 1–2—plan: Create the sitemap, navigation, user journeys, content inventory, technical requirements, and redirects if replacing an old site.
- Weeks 2–4—prepare and design: Write or approve copy, gather photography, produce wireframes, establish visual direction, and design desktop and mobile pages.
- Weeks 4–8—build: Configure the platform, templates, CMS, forms, ecommerce, analytics, and third-party integrations.
- Weeks 8–10—test and revise: Check major browsers and devices, links, forms, checkout, test orders, accessibility basics, metadata, indexing settings, performance, error states, and confirmation emails.
- Week 10 or later—launch: Back up the site, obtain final approval, connect the domain, apply redirects, verify analytics and forms in production, and monitor for fixes.
How long does a five-page website take?
“Five pages” is not a reliable schedule. A prepared template with five simple pages may take 1–3 days. A moderately customized DIY build may take 1–2 weeks; a freelancer-led professional site often takes 2–6 weeks; and a custom strategy, UX, copy, design, and development engagement may take 6–12 weeks.

Functionality, content, integrations, and approval cycles matter more than page count.
Ecommerce and web applications need separate estimates
Online stores
A small store typically takes 2–8 weeks. A larger or customized operation can take 2–5 months. The schedule expands with product variants, photography, shipping and tax rules, payment gateways, inventory synchronization, customer accounts, returns, fulfillment, email automation, marketplace connections, or custom checkout logic. Shopify’s timeline guidance identifies customization, products, integrations, and testing as major variables.

Custom web applications
A SaaS product, customer portal, marketplace, booking platform, internal system, or configurator is not an ordinary website. Plan for at least 3–6 months for a modest application and 6–12 months or longer for a complex product. Authentication, databases, permissions, backend logic, security, deployment, and iterative testing create a much longer critical path. Resourcifi distinguishes these projects from standard website builds in its development timeline.
What makes a website take longer?
Content that is late or keeps changing
Unapproved copy, missing product descriptions, unavailable photography, unclear services, repeated rewrites, and legal review can delay a project as much as development. Elementor notes that writing, sourcing, and approving content can consume more time than design and build (Elementor’s timeline guide).
Custom functionality and integrations
- Memberships, accounts, dashboards, and permissions
- Booking systems, calculators, configurators, search, and filtering
- CRM, marketing automation, ERP, inventory, or fulfillment connections
- Multilingual content, personalization, complex animation, or migrations
Approvals and revisions
One empowered decision-maker is faster than a committee. Conflicting feedback, separate review rounds, late legal approval, or changing an approved design creates rework. Distinguish a normal refinement round from a scope change or a new feature request; a change to a shared component can affect many pages.
Platform and team availability
Hosted builders reduce setup and maintenance decisions. Self-hosted and custom solutions provide more control but add technical responsibility. A developer waiting for content or stakeholder feedback is not spending that time building.
What should be ready before development starts?
- Business: goal, audience, primary action, services or products, final approver, budget, and launch date.
- Content: near-final copy, logo and brand assets, photos, testimonials, pricing, contact details, and privacy or legal text.
- Technical: domain, platform or CMS, hosting, business email, analytics, payment processor, CRM, booking and email tools, and migration requirements.
- Controls: fixed initial scope, feedback deadlines, revision limit, named project owner, definition of launch, and post-launch support plan.
The fastest schedule usually comes from removing waiting, uncertainty, and rework—not from finding a developer who promises impossible speed.

Choosing an approach for speed and control
| Approach | Best when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| AI builder | You need a simple first version quickly and can edit generated output. | Fast generation may create brand, accuracy, accessibility, and content-cleanup work. |
| Template builder | You want a credible, personally managed site within the template’s design limits. | Less control over unusual layouts, workflows, portability, and deep customization. |
| WordPress | Publishing, extensions, and hosting control are important and a maintainer is available. | More setup, compatibility, security, and update responsibility. |
| Shopify | Products, orders, payments, shipping, and inventory are central. | Platform, app, payment, and transaction costs and constraints require evaluation. |
| Webflow or a design-led builder | Visual control and a custom marketing experience matter. | Steeper design and implementation complexity. |
| Freelancer | The scope is contained and one person can provide prompt decisions and content. | Capacity and expertise vary; confirm exactly what the quote includes. |
| Agency | You need strategy, brand, UX, content, integrations, project management, and launch support. | More process and usually a longer lead time, although it can reduce your workload. |
Can you build a website in a week?
Yes, if the scope is a small template or AI-assisted site, content and images are ready, one person can approve decisions, and the project uses standard features. A one-week plan is not a dependable promise for a polished custom business site, ecommerce operation, or application. To meet a fixed date, launch the essential pages and one primary conversion first, then place advanced features in a post-launch backlog.
Domain, DNS, and launch details
Being technically complete does not guarantee immediate availability at the final address. Launch may require nameserver or DNS-record changes, SSL, email-record checks, redirects, analytics verification, and production testing. Wix explains that a custom domain requires both the domain and an eligible paid site plan (Wix domain and plan documentation) and documents nameserver and pointing methods at its domain-connection guide. Shopify documents third-party domain DNS changes at its support page.
Do not promise a universal propagation time: it varies with the registrar, DNS records, resolver caching, and the change being made.
Website launch checklist
- All page copy, prices, contact details, images, and legal information are accurate.
- Navigation, internal links, downloads, 404 pages, and search work.
- Layouts and text are usable on current mobile and desktop browsers.
- Forms deliver messages, confirmations are received, and spam protection works.
- Checkout, taxes, shipping, inventory, refunds, and test orders work where applicable.
- Titles, descriptions, canonical or indexing settings, sitemap, analytics, and conversion tracking are configured.
- Accessibility basics, performance, SSL, backups, and security settings have been checked.
- Domain, redirects, email records, and production integrations are verified.
- A post-launch owner is assigned to monitor errors and handle fixes.
Commercial choices that affect the schedule
For a fast brochure site, managed builders such as Wix, Squarespace, Hostinger Website Builder, or WordPress.com reduce setup work. Their current features, plan limits, and promotional terms vary by location and billing period, so check the official pages: Wix, Squarespace, Hostinger, and WordPress.com.
Shopify is designed for stores; compare its current plans at Shopify’s pricing page. Webflow is oriented toward design-led visual builds; verify current limits at Webflow’s pricing page. A freelancer or agency may be the better choice when the work involves strategy, original content, complex integrations, or a business-critical launch. Compare deliverables—copy, mobile optimization, QA, ownership, migration, training, and support—not only the headline quote.

When a phased launch is sensible
You can launch a smaller first version when it is accurate, usable, secure, mobile-friendly, legally adequate, and able to receive contacts or orders. Defer nonessential animation, elaborate personalization, unusual integrations, and edge-case features. A phased launch is safer than allowing optional work to destabilize a fixed date, but it still needs a defined owner and backlog for the next release.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I build a website in one day?
Yes, for a simple AI- or template-based site with prepared content, one clear call to action, and no complex backend. That is a first or functional version, not a universal promise for a polished custom business website.
Is a web application the same as a website?
No. Applications add authentication, databases, permissions, backend logic, security, and ongoing product testing, so their schedules are usually measured in months rather than days or weeks.
Why does a five-page website take six weeks?
The schedule may include copy and photography, mobile layouts, design approval, forms, integrations, revisions, testing, domain work, and launch—not just assembling five page templates.
