How Long Do U.S. Marriages Last? What the Census Figures Mean

The latest cited U.S. Census Bureau figure is a 20.0-year median duration for current marriages in the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS). That is not the average completed lifespan of every marriage. A separate, older Census analysis found that first marriages ending in divorce lasted a median of eight years, based on 2009 data. The figures describe different groups and outcomes.

What is the current Census figure for marriage duration?

The U.S. Census Bureau’s 2024 ACS table on median duration of current marriage reports a median of 20.0 years. Its universe is people age 15 and older who are currently married or separated, and the measure is the duration of their current marriage.

A median is the midpoint: half of the people represented had a current marriage duration below that value and half above it. It is not an arithmetic mean, a forecast of how long a newlywed couple will stay together, or the completed lifespan of all marriages. Because it measures marriages still current at the time of the survey, marriages that had already ended are not part of this measure.

Why do some sources say eight years?

The eight-year figure answers a narrower question. In a Census Bureau report published in 2011, analysis of 2009 marital-history data found that first marriages that ended in divorce lasted a median of eight years for both men and women. It describes a particular set of marriages that had ended in divorce, not all marriages in the United States.

The same analysis put the median time from marriage to separation at about seven years. Separation and divorce are different endpoints: a couple may separate before the divorce is final.

Measure Value Population and endpoint Data year
Median duration of current marriage 20.0 years People age 15 and older currently married or separated; current marriage 2024 ACS
Median duration of first marriages ending in divorce 8 years Men and women whose first marriage ended in divorce 2009 marital-history data; report published 2011
Median time from marriage to separation About 7 years Marriages ending in separation 2009 marital-history data; report published 2011

Can anniversary milestones predict how long a marriage will last?

No. A Census Bureau snapshot from 2009 reported that, among couples who were still married at that time, 55 percent had been married at least 15 years, 35 percent had reached 25 years, and 6 percent had passed 50 years. These are shares of the then-currently married population, not the eventual odds that a couple marrying today will reach those anniversaries. Couples whose marriages had already ended were absent from that snapshot.

Is there a newer figure for marriages that end in divorce?

The Census Bureau’s 2021 release describing its 2016 marital-patterns report says the report drew on 2016 ACS one-year estimates, 2014 Survey of Income and Program Participation Wave 1, and a 2014 Social Security Administration supplement. It reports that in 2016, 76 percent of currently married men and 77 percent of currently married women were in their first marriage. The release does not give a newer duration estimate directly comparable to the eight-year median for first marriages ending in divorce.

The cited figures therefore do not establish one recent median for the eventual duration of all U.S. marriages, including those ending in divorce, widowhood, or remaining ongoing. The 20-year and eight-year figures should not be combined to calculate one.
