Fintech is making many cross-border transfers cheaper, faster and easier to track by moving onboarding, payments and payouts onto digital systems. But the gains vary by corridor and delivery method: cash access, exchange rates, compliance checks and local payment infrastructure still shape what a household actually pays and when it receives the money.

What has improved—and what has not

The clearest measurable difference is cost. In the World Bank’s Q3 2025 Remittance Prices Worldwide data, digital remittances averaged 4.59% of the amount sent, compared with 7.30% for non-digital services. Digital-only money-transfer operators averaged 3.54%; banks averaged 14.99%. These are averages across the services and corridors tracked, not quotes for every provider or transfer. World Bank Q3 2025 report

The overall global average was still 6.36% in Q3 2025, above the UN Sustainable Development Goal target of 3%. Sub-Saharan Africa had the highest regional average, at 8.46%. The G20 target is a global average cost of no more than 3% for a $200 remittance by 2030, with no corridor above 5%. In its 2025 progress report, the Financial Stability Board said speed had improved but cost remained sticky and overall progress was slight. G20 cross-border payment targets; FSB 2025 progress report

Digital services represented 35% of services collected for the World Bank’s Q3 2025 dataset; that is a share of observed services, not a share of all transfers by value. The dataset catalog says the May 2026 update covered 377 corridors, 48 sending countries and 111 receiving countries. World Bank dataset catalog

What a remittance involves

A remittance is a cross-border transfer, often sent by a migrant worker or diaspora member to support a person or household in another country. The sender starts the transfer, the provider verifies identity and screens the transaction, money moves through payment networks and financial institutions, and a local partner makes it available to the recipient. Depending on the corridor, funds may travel through banks, money-transfer operators, card networks, mobile-money systems or payment switches. The recipient might get a bank deposit, wallet balance, card credit or cash pickup.

The price is more than the advertised fee. It can include a funding charge, exchange-rate margin, intermediary or payout fees and, in some cases, costs associated with a delay or cancellation. The World Bank’s methodology explains that its total-cost measure includes the transfer fee and exchange-rate margin, and advises consumers to obtain current quotes from providers. How fintech can reduce costs

Digital-first distribution

Apps and websites let customers register, provide identity documents, fund a transfer, choose a delivery method and track payment without necessarily visiting a branch or agent. That can reduce physical distribution costs, though providers still pay for licensing, compliance, fraud prevention, customer service and local payout networks.

Automation and scale

Automated identity checks, transaction monitoring, routing and treasury tools can reduce manual work and help providers manage liquidity across corridors. Higher transfer volumes can spread some operating costs across more payments. Neither automation nor scale guarantees a lower price: providers may retain savings, face high customer-acquisition costs or set different prices by corridor.

More competitive currency pricing

Some digital providers make the exchange rate and fee easier to see before a transfer is submitted. Wise says its U.S. service uses the mid-market exchange rate plus an upfront fee; actual price and delivery time vary by currency pair, amount, funding method and destination. Wise U.S. pricing

That distinction matters because a low or zero transfer fee can be offset by a less favorable exchange rate. Compare the amount the recipient will get, not just the fee shown in large type.

How fintech can make transfers faster

Digital verification, automated routing, direct account deposits, wallet payouts and domestic fast-payment systems can shorten the time between sending and receiving. Real-time tracking also helps customers see whether a transfer is processing, paid or awaiting action.

The World Bank summarized research finding that a domestic fast-payment system in either the sending or receiving country may lower the cost of a $200 remittance by approximately 0.3 to 1 percentage point. That is an estimated effect, not a guaranteed discount for every corridor. Such systems can enable competition and let non-bank providers use domestic payment infrastructure rather than relying entirely on correspondent banking. World Bank analysis of fast-payment systems

“Instant” may describe only one part of a transfer. Verification, funding, currency conversion, settlement, recipient-bank processing and cash-out can take different amounts of time. Screening, holidays, incorrect account details, currency controls, payout-partner availability or a fraud review can delay funds even when the underlying payment rail operates quickly. The BIS describes fast-payment systems as enabling near-immediate availability on a 24/7 basis, while noting that pricing must balance consumer use with incentives for payment providers to participate. How wallets and hybrid networks widen access

A mobile wallet can receive money without a conventional bank account and make it available beyond bank-branch hours. Depending on the service, a recipient may use funds for household purchases, pay bills or transfer them onward. Some wallets can connect remittances to savings, credit, insurance or merchant payments, but receiving a transfer does not by itself create meaningful financial inclusion: fees, trust, consumer protections and the ability to keep money in the account all matter.

Wallets also have limits. A recipient may face balance caps, cash-out charges, network outages or an agent without enough cash. Cross-border functionality and currency conversion vary. A compliance review can restrict access to an account while a transaction is checked. Compare the total amount the recipient can actually use after any withdrawal or conversion costs.

Digital-only services are not the only option. MoneyGram says customers in the United States can send through its app, online or in person, with receiving methods that include cash pickup, bank accounts, debit cards and digital wallets where available. The company also advertises a network of more than 200 countries and territories and more than 470,000 locations; these are company claims, not a guarantee that every service or payout method is available in every destination. Access, affordability, usability and reliability are different tests. A service may technically support a destination but remain unusable for someone without a smartphone, stable connectivity, suitable identification, a bank account or confidence using digital financial tools. The World Bank identifies connectivity, documentation, familiarity with digital tools and rigid customer-due-diligence requirements as barriers that can keep people in higher-cost cash channels. How to compare the real cost

Use the same sending country, destination, amount, funding method, delivery method and recipient currency for each quote. A bank-funded deposit and a card-funded cash pickup are not comparable offers. Provider prices may also change with the time of day, promotion, customer status and transfer size. The World Bank’s database can help with broad comparisons, but it advises consumers to check live provider quotes. Remittance Prices Worldwide dataset

  1. Start with recipient value: note how much arrives after the fee and exchange-rate adjustment.
  2. Check total cost: compare the sender’s full outlay with the recipient amount, including funding or cash-out charges where applicable.
  3. Match the delivery method: compare bank deposit with bank deposit, wallet with wallet or cash pickup with cash pickup.
  4. Check the actual timing: read the estimate for that exact method and corridor, including any conditions or review holds.
  5. Confirm access and limits: ensure the recipient has the needed account, phone, identification or nearby agent, and check per-transfer and account limits.
  6. Read the terms: check cancellation and refund rules, customer support, provider authorization in the relevant jurisdiction and whether an introductory price expires.

A useful comparison is the recipient amount divided by the sender’s total cost. It reflects the outcome better than “fee-free” marketing, but it does not replace checking delivery reliability and whether the recipient can access the funds.

Transparency and security: gains with new risks

Digital interfaces can show the exchange rate, fee, recipient amount and estimated delivery time before payment. Tracking, receipts and alerts give customers a record and visibility into a transfer. Still, quotes can differ by promotion, transfer size, payment and payout method, destination, currency or customer eligibility. A promotional rate should not be treated as the recurring price.

Providers may use multi-factor authentication, device checks, transaction monitoring, recipient confirmation and automated fraud scoring. These controls can help detect suspicious activity, but digital services create exposure to phishing, account takeover, SIM swaps, malware, fake support accounts and impersonation or romance scams. A transfer can be technically authorized yet still be a scam if the sender was manipulated into paying a fraudster. Cash pickup may be difficult or impossible to reverse once collected.

Compliance reviews can also affect legitimate customers. Identity, source-of-funds or transaction-pattern checks may delay or block a payment while it is reviewed. A review is a risk-control measure, not proof that a sender has done something wrong, but a household waiting on urgent money can face real hardship.

The infrastructure behind the app

A remittance app is usually one layer in a larger system. Its performance depends on domestic payment switches, banks, mobile operators, liquidity providers, payment APIs, regulators and local payout partners. Interoperability—those systems being able to connect and exchange payments—can help route funds directly and reduce reliance on costly intermediaries. Where links are missing or access is restricted, a polished app cannot fix the underlying bottleneck.

Non-bank providers also need workable access to payment infrastructure. The BIS notes that regulatory frameworks are being urged to address digital wallets, agents, intermediaries, payment-initiation services and non-bank payment providers with proportionate supervision. Rules that are too weak can expose consumers and systems to risk; inconsistent or excessive burdens can raise costs and make it harder for smaller providers to compete. Where fintech still falls short

  • Cash dependence: A recipient without a suitable account, phone or identification may need an agent or informal option even when a digital transfer would be cheaper.
  • Corridor differences: A provider’s price and payout coverage from one country to another do not predict its offer on a different route. The World Bank’s Q3 2025 regional average for Sub-Saharan Africa was 8.46%, illustrating how far costs can remain from the global target in some regions.
  • Hidden or separate charges: Card funding, urgent delivery, wallet withdrawal or a wide exchange-rate margin can make a digital transfer more expensive than its headline fee suggests.
  • Incomplete interoperability: A provider may serve a destination but offer only selected payout methods, limits or currencies there.
  • Currency and liquidity risk: Exchange rates may move between quote and settlement, while local currency restrictions or payout-partner liquidity can affect what recipients receive.
  • Informal competition: Family networks, travelers or local agents may be preferred where formal services are inaccessible, distrusted or poorly suited to undocumented users. Informal channels can carry their own safety and recovery risks.

Stablecoins and blockchain: possible rails, not a proven universal fix

Blockchain-based settlement or stablecoins could support 24/7 transfers and reduce dependence on some correspondent-bank steps in particular arrangements. But a recipient may still need a regulated exchange or local provider to convert funds into spendable currency. On- and off-ramp fees, liquidity, regulation, wallet security, sanctions controls and consumer protections can erase a theoretical speed or cost advantage. Without corridor-specific evidence, blockchain should not be treated as proof that remittances are broadly cheaper.

How to choose a provider for your transfer

There is no universally cheapest or best provider: the right choice depends on the route and how the recipient needs to receive the money. Compare live quotes for the same amount and conditions, and consider whether a cash pickup option or broad agent network is worth paying for. A bank may be useful for high-value payments, documentation or an established customer relationship, even though the World Bank found banks to be the costliest provider category on average in Q3 2025. That category average does not establish the price of a particular bank transfer.

For example, Wise describes its pricing as an upfront fee plus the mid-market exchange rate, while MoneyGram offers both digital and agent-based options where available. Those features indicate different use cases, not a corridor-wide price ranking. Wise U.S. pricing; MoneyGram U.S. service information

  • For a routine bank deposit, prioritize the recipient amount and final exchange rate.
  • For a recipient who needs cash, weigh agent proximity and pickup reliability against the higher potential cost.
  • For wallet delivery, check the recipient’s wallet eligibility, limits and eventual cash-out fees.
  • For recurring or urgent transfers, compare regular pricing, delivery estimates, cancellation terms and customer support—not only a first-transfer promotion.

Fintech has improved the remittance experience most clearly where digital competition, efficient domestic payment rails and usable receiving options come together. Its benefits reach households only when the transfer is affordable, reliable and accessible to the person receiving it.
