SoundHound AI makes money mainly by licensing conversational AI to businesses. It earns product royalties when companies embed its technology in devices such as vehicles, charges subscriptions for business applications and services, and reports a smaller monetization stream tied chiefly to advertising and referrals in its music-identification app. It does not make its core business by selling cars or consumer electronics.

What does SoundHound AI sell?

SoundHound sells voice and conversational AI software, related services, and tools for building digital assistants. Its offerings include the Houndify platform, automotive and consumer-electronics voice interfaces, restaurant ordering and answering systems, enterprise virtual assistants, and OASYS, its platform for building conversational agents that can handle tasks and workflows.

Businesses can deploy these capabilities across interfaces such as in-vehicle systems, phones, kiosks, drive-throughs, chat, smart devices, and televisions. SoundHound describes its customer markets as including automotive, consumer electronics, restaurants, retail, healthcare, financial services, and telecommunications. The customer, rather than the consumer using the interface, is generally the party paying SoundHound.

How does SoundHound AI make money?

SoundHound’s filings group revenue into three categories: Product Royalties, Service Subscriptions, and Monetization. Royalties and subscriptions are the core streams; management said in its Q2 2026 filing that they represented the majority of revenue, while the music app made only a small contribution to monetization.

Revenue stream Who pays How it is charged What the filings establish about scale
Product Royalties Companies that embed SoundHound technology in products May vary with device volume, usage, and product life One of the two core streams; no complete current dollar split is stated in the reviewed filings.
Service Subscriptions Providers and businesses using SoundHound applications or services May be a fixed monthly fee or tied to usage, queries, or users One of the two core streams; no complete current dollar split is stated in the reviewed filings.
Monetization Advertisers and, for referrals, affiliate partners Primarily advertising impressions, with affiliate revenue from referrals also described in the FY2025 filing The FY2026 quarterly filing describes the music app’s contribution as small.

Product royalties: technology inside other companies’ products

A vehicle maker or consumer-electronics company can incorporate SoundHound’s voice technology into a product. SoundHound then earns royalties under the relevant arrangement, with revenue potentially affected by the number of devices, how much the system is used, and how long the product remains in use. SoundHound supplies the technology; it does not sell the cars, TVs, or other devices.

Service subscriptions: business applications and hosted services

Service Subscriptions cover applications and services such as customer service, food ordering, content, appointments, voice commerce, autonomous workflows, and IT systems analysis. A customer may pay a set fee or a fee linked to usage, queries, or users. Delivery can differ by contract: SoundHound describes hosted services and on-premise software arrangements, including Amelia software that can be hosted as SaaS or licensed for on-premise deployment.

Implementation work can also be part of the customer relationship. The FY2025 filing says customers generally receive contractual access to Houndify rather than taking possession of the software, and SoundHound may customize the platform through implementation services.

Monetization: mainly ads and music-app referrals

SoundHound’s FY2025 filing describes monetization revenue as coming from focused advertising in products and services using its technology. At that time, it said the stream came from its music-identification application, primarily ad impressions and, to a lesser extent, affiliate referrals to music stores and its premium music application. The Q2 2026 filing says the music app contributed only a small amount to the monetization pillar. The reviewed filings do not establish broad consumer transactions or lead generation as a major current revenue source.

Who are SoundHound AI’s customers?

SoundHound is a business-to-business provider. Product creators can use its embedded voice technology, while service providers and enterprises can use its applications for customer interactions and internal workflows. The company has reported customers and activity across several industries, but it does not disclose a complete current revenue breakdown by industry or product line in the reviewed materials.

In its Q2 2026 materials, SoundHound reported deals or expansions involving Stellantis, Hyundai, Ruby Tuesday, Five Guys, IHOP, Jersey Mike’s, Habit Burger, Red Lobster, Torchy’s Tacos, a nationally ranked healthcare system, and a Chinese automotive infotainment software company. Some counterparties were not named, and the company did not state values for many agreements. These announcements show the range of applications and relationships; they do not establish that each customer generated material revenue in that quarter.

How much money does SoundHound make, and is it profitable?

SoundHound reported revenue of $168.920 million for fiscal 2025, compared with $84.693 million for fiscal 2024, and a GAAP gross margin of 42.4% for fiscal 2025. These are reported annual results, not a measure of net profitability.

For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, SoundHound reported revenue of $61.897 million, up 45% year over year, and a GAAP net loss of $42.817 million. It also reported an adjusted EBITDA loss of $9.607 million; adjusted EBITDA is a non-GAAP measure and is not interchangeable with the GAAP net loss. Revenue growth therefore should not be read as proof that the company was profitable.

On August 5, 2026, management gave a full-year 2026 revenue outlook of $230 million to $260 million. That was a forward-looking estimate, not revenue already earned, and the company said it expected to update guidance after the contemplated LivePerson transaction. SoundHound’s investor-relations page later reported that the LivePerson acquisition was completed on September 4, 2026. The Q2 release also reported $203 million in cash and no debt as of June 30; those figures predate the acquisition and should not be treated as a post-acquisition balance.

What the business model means for investors

SoundHound’s model combines two different kinds of business: royalties linked to products made by other companies, and subscriptions or services sold to organizations. Royalties can depend on product volumes and usage over time; subscriptions can provide recurring fees but may also vary with usage or contract structure. Implementation and customer-specific deployments are part of the service model.

The music app’s advertising and referral revenue is a separate, relatively small disclosed contribution, not evidence that the company already earns substantial fees from transactions across its enterprise platform. Exact contemporary revenue shares by stream, product, and customer industry are not stated in the reviewed filings, so customer announcements alone cannot be used to calculate them.

Recent company developments

SoundHound’s investor-relations page lists an OASYS Edge announcement on September 24, 2026, and a Kia Sorento deployment in India on September 30, 2026. These are company announcements about product and deployment activity, not independent evaluations of performance or evidence of a particular amount of revenue. The same investor page reports the LivePerson acquisition completion on September 4, 2026; integration and the effect on future results remain execution-dependent.
