Yes, old electronics contain real gold—but usually as microscopic plating, contacts, or bonding wire rather than visible pieces. Recovering it profitably requires reuse screening, secure collection, dismantling, mechanical concentration, representative assay, industrial metallurgy, pollution controls, and final refining. The operation makes economic sense at refinery scale because gold is recovered alongside copper, silver, palladium, nickel, tin, and other materials.
Where the gold is hiding
Gold appears where electronics need a corrosion-resistant, dependable electrical connection. Common locations include:
- Edge connectors: the exposed “gold fingers” on some RAM modules, expansion cards, and circuit boards.
- Pin and socket contacts: plated surfaces in connectors that must continue working after years of exposure.
- Processors and integrated circuits: some older or specialized packages used gold-plated contacts or fine gold bonding wire.
- Printed circuit boards: a mixed metal assembly that may also contain copper, silver, palladium, nickel, tin, lead, and other materials.
- Switches, relays, and telecommunications hardware: industrial and legacy equipment sometimes used thicker or higher-grade precious-metal plating than ordinary consumer products.
- Phones and small IT devices: valuable mainly because many metals are concentrated in a small, recoverable mass.
A gold-colored surface is not proof of gold. Brass, copper, nickel, titanium nitride, and other coatings can look similar. EPA identifies gold, silver, palladium, copper, aluminum, and other recoverable resources in electronics, but the quantity varies sharply by product.
Why manufacturers use gold
Gold resists oxidation and corrosion, maintains reliable low-resistance contact, and can be deposited in a very thin layer. That makes it useful where a connection must remain dependable over many mating cycles or under demanding conditions.

Its engineering value is not the same as its scrap value. A coating only micrometers thick can be essential in a connector yet worth little when separated from a single discarded device.
Why gold content varies so much
There is no trustworthy universal “gold per phone” number. Content depends on device type, manufacturing year, industrial versus consumer origin, component quality, plating thickness, and whether someone has already removed the highest-grade parts. Whole equipment, sorted boards, processors, connectors, and shredded residues are different feedstocks.
Commercial refiners therefore use representative sampling and laboratory assay rather than an internet average. Umicore describes assay-based settlement for e-scrap and lists separate commercial minimums for boards, phones, CPUs, connectors, laptops, and shredded fractions.
The industrial journey from device to refinery
1. Reuse comes before metal recovery
A functioning laptop or phone may be worth more as a working product than as scrap. Responsible systems first consider repair, refurbishment, donation, resale, and component reuse. Recycling is appropriate when the product or component is no longer useful.
2. Collection, chain of custody, and data security
Business equipment can contain confidential records and intellectual property. An enterprise disposition program may include an asset inventory, secure transport, documented chain of custody, certified data sanitization or destruction, refurbishment, resale, and recycling. Sims Lifecycle Services describes these as distinct parts of enterprise IT asset disposition.

3. Depollution and dismantling
Workers or automated systems remove batteries, mercury-containing components, CRT glass, screens, toner cartridges, capacitors, and other hazardous or reusable parts. Steel, aluminum, wiring, plastics, and saleable components are separated before intensive processing.
This step protects workers and prevents hazardous material from entering furnaces, shredders, wastewater, or landfills. EPA lists potential WEEE hazards including lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, beryllium, chromium, and nickel.
4. Mechanical concentration
Selected material may be dismantled, shredded, or granulated. Magnets remove ferrous metal; screens, air classification, density separation, and related equipment separate plastics and produce a nonferrous or circuit-board-rich fraction. Mechanical processing does not make pure gold. It creates a more uniform, valuable, and chemically manageable feedstock.

5. Sampling, assay, and settlement
Precious metals can be unevenly distributed through a truckload of mixed boards. A refinery must characterize and homogenize material as appropriate, take representative samples, measure gold and other payable metals, account for moisture and contamination, and apply recovery assumptions, treatment charges, penalties, and processing costs. The result is a commercial settlement—not a payment based on how shiny the load looks.

How industrial plants extract the metals
| Route | What happens | Strengths | Constraints |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pyrometallurgy | Prepared scrap enters controlled furnaces. Base metals such as copper collect precious metals in a molten phase; other material enters slag or managed residues. Gas-cleaning systems capture dust and acid gases. | Handles large, chemically mixed feedstocks and integrates with copper and precious-metal refining. | High energy and capital requirements; sophisticated controls are needed for heavy metals, dust, organic pollutants, slag, and other residues. |
| Hydrometallurgy | Prepared concentrates are leached in controlled solutions. Solids are separated, unwanted metals are removed, and gold is recovered from solution by methods such as precipitation, adsorption, or electrowinning before melting and refining. | Can be selective, operate at lower temperatures, and suit particular high-grade fractions. | Requires careful chemistry, hazardous-reagent management, contaminated liquid treatment, and feed-specific process control. |
| Combined flowsheets | Mechanical, thermal, chemical, and electrochemical stages are combined according to feed composition. | Allows a plant to recover multiple metals from complex material. | The exact sequence is site-specific and generally proprietary. |
The European Commission notes that high-temperature recovery can generate harmful gases and dust without suitable controls. Avoid assuming a lower-temperature chemical route is automatically clean: reagents, effluent, residues, energy, and maintenance still require control. UNEP’s technology compendium treats emissions, residual waste, operating costs, and regulatory requirements as part of a viable system.
How recovered gold becomes a saleable product
Gold may move through several intermediate forms: a precious-metal-bearing molten phase, concentrate, anode or cathode material, precipitate, powder, or doré-like product. The refinery then purifies and assays it to specification. A shiny bead is not proof of purity; only analytical testing establishes precious-metal content.

Gold is only one revenue stream. Copper, silver, palladium, nickel, tin, and sometimes aluminum help pay for collection, transport, labor, sorting, energy, assay, pollution controls, wastewater treatment, and residue disposal. A low-grade stream rarely works if gold is the only target.
Scale matters. Umicore lists recommended minimums of 10 tonnes for mixed PCBs, 2 tonnes for phones and small IT devices, 1–5 tonnes for CPUs, ICs, and connectors, 10 tonnes for laptops without batteries and screens, and 25–100 tonnes for certain shredded fractions. These are Umicore’s commercial recommendations, not universal industry rules, but they illustrate why a household box of boards is not a refinery feedstock.

A widely cited USGS comparison published in 2001 found that one metric ton of personal-computer electronic scrap could contain more gold than 17 metric tons of gold ore. That was historical and feedstock-specific; it does not mean every modern laptop or phone is unusually gold-rich.
Why home gold recovery usually fails
Videos showing stripped “gold fingers,” acid baths, burning, or improvised furnaces omit most of the real process:
- The visible coating may be extremely thin and worth little on its own.
- Sorting, stripping, shipping, and labor can exceed the metal’s value.
- Acids and other reagents can create toxic vapors and contaminated liquid waste.
- Burning boards can release hazardous metals and organic pollutants.
- Improvised setups lack industrial ventilation, capture systems, analytical testing, and permitted waste disposal.
- Waste treatment is part of extraction, not an optional cleanup step.
EPA warns that uncontrolled combustion can distribute heavy metals into slag, fly ash, flue gas, and filter cake. Do not use cyanide, mercury, mixed acids, or improvised heating equipment to process electronics.

Usually, controlled recycling can avoid some virgin extraction, return concentrated metals to manufacturing, reduce landfill disposal, and support domestic processing capacity. But it is not impact-free: collection and transport consume resources, shredding and refining use energy, and hazardous residues still require treatment. Informal burning or chemical processing can cause severe harm.

Reuse is often the better first option when a device still works. EPA says responsible electronics recycling returns materials such as gold, copper, glass, and aluminum to the supply chain.
The scale of the challenge is substantial. The Global E-waste Monitor 2024 estimated about 62 million metric tons of e-waste generated worldwide in 2022, with about 22% documented as formally collected and recycled. Those figures cover all e-waste, not just gold-bearing material, and are not a 2026 measurement.
What to do with old electronics
Households
- Check whether the device can be repaired, sold, donated, or reused.
- Back up data and use the manufacturer’s secure-reset or erasure process.
- Do not remove a battery unless the manufacturer says it is safe; use a qualified collection route when it is damaged or built in.
- Use a municipal, retailer, manufacturer, R2-certified, or e-Stewards-certified recycler.
- Do not dismantle equipment solely to chase gold.
Small scrappers
Ask whether a buyer pays by category, weight, assay, or a published schedule; what minimum shipment applies; which batteries and hazardous parts are excluded; who performs downstream refining; and whether the material is more valuable intact or as reusable components. Include acquisition, transport, labor, and compliant disposal in the calculation.
Businesses, schools, and public agencies
- Require asset-level tracking and documented data destruction.
- Confirm insurance, permitted transport, battery and display handling, and downstream documentation.
- Compare resale, refurbishment, component harvesting, and material recovery.
- Consider R2 or e-Stewards certification where appropriate. The e-Stewards standard covers environmental protection, social responsibility, legal compliance, data security, and international waste-trade requirements.
- For industrial quantities, request a quote and settlement terms from a precious-metal refiner. Sims Precious Metals accepts circuit boards, processors, connectors, semiconductors, plated contacts, electronic dust, sludges, and residues on a quote-based commercial basis.
For a certified processor, use the e-Stewards directory or verify an R2 provider through the relevant certification program. There is no universal payout: fees, assay, recovery, transportation, and downstream terms vary by location and material.

The gold in old electronics is real, but it is normally a thin coating or tiny component dispersed through a complicated mixture. Industrial recyclers make recovery work by combining reuse decisions, depollution, mechanical concentration, assay, metallurgy, co-product recovery, and strict hazard controls. For individuals, the financially and environmentally sound choice is to preserve working devices and send obsolete ones to a legitimate recycler—not to recreate a refinery in a garage.
