A stream company generally buys contracted metal from a mine operator and resells it; a royalty holder receives a contract-defined share of revenue or production. These mechanics are described in Royal Gold’s filings, but individual agreements—and therefore company results—vary.
How a metal stream affects revenue
A stream is a purchase agreement: in exchange for an upfront deposit, the company gains the right to buy some or all of specified metals produced at a mine at a price set by the agreement. Royal Gold says it takes delivered gold, silver, or copper into inventory and sells the metal, primarily through average-spot-rate forward contracts. Its 2024 annual report says those sale prices are based on average daily spot prices over a consecutive period that typically ranges from ten days to three months, depending on delivery frequency and sales policy. Revenue is recognized when control, custody, and title transfer to the purchaser on settlement. Royal Gold’s 2024 Form 10-K
For a stream, keep gross revenue separate from the spread left after purchase costs. If the company sells more metal, or sells it at a higher price, gross metal-sale revenue may rise. The contract price it pays the operator affects cost of sales and the margin on those sales; it does not simply subtract from gross revenue. The purchase price, resale pricing basis, and timing of delivery and settlement all shape the reported result.
How a royalty affects revenue
A royalty is a non-operating interest that entitles its holder to a contract-defined percentage of project revenue or a share of metals produced. The mine operator runs the operation and markets the production; the royalty holder does not. Royal Gold reports that its royalty payments use a contractually specified commodity price for the period in which production occurred. Reported royalty revenue is net of allowable offsite treatment, refining, transportation, and, where applicable, other costs. The exact entitlement, pricing basis, and deductions depend on the agreement. Royal Gold’s 2024 Form 10-K

With production and other terms held constant, a higher relevant metal price can increase royalty revenue. But production can also change revenue when prices are flat, and the contract’s pricing period and permitted deductions mean the realized amount may differ from a simple calculation using the headline spot price and royalty percentage.
What to check when metal prices move
A metal-price move is only one part of the revenue picture. To understand how it may flow through a particular company’s results, check the following for its material agreements:

- Metal exposure: Identify which metals account for the portfolio’s revenue and whether each contract uses spot, an average over a defined period, or another pricing basis.
- Production and deliveries: Check how much eligible metal the mines produce and how much is delivered under streams or covered by royalties.
- Stream purchase terms: Compare the contractual purchase price with the price used to resell delivered metal. This spread informs the economics, while sales revenue reflects the resale value and volume.
- Royalty terms: Review the percentage or metal entitlement, applicable pricing period, and allowed deductions.
- Reporting timing: Distinguish production, delivery, sale, and settlement dates. They may fall in different reporting periods; for Royal Gold’s stream sales, the cited policy recognizes revenue at settlement when control, custody, and title transfer.
Why there is no universal price-sensitivity figure
Royal Gold’s 2023 annual report says, “Our revenue is directly tied to metal prices and is particularly sensitive to changes in the price of gold, as we derive the majority of our revenue from gold stream and royalty interests.” The same filing says its stream agreements require it to buy metal at a fixed price or a stated percentage of market price and then sell the metal in the open market. This is Royal Gold’s qualitative description; the cited disclosure does not quantify a revenue change for each dollar or percentage move in gold, and it is not a sensitivity estimate for the sector. For a specific issuer, use its current filings and agreement disclosures rather than applying Royal Gold’s portfolio mix or contract terms to another company. The same metal-price increase can produce different revenue effects depending on the company’s metals, production exposure, stream purchase terms, royalty deductions, and accounting timing.
