How Crypto Transaction Fees Work on Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP

Bitcoin fees depend on transaction size and block-space demand, Ethereum fees on gas and per-unit pricing, and XRP Ledger costs on a specified amount that is destroyed.

Bitcoin fees compete for block space, Ethereum fees pay for computation, and XRP Ledger transaction costs are destroyed rather than paid to a validator. Because the networks use different mechanisms and units, there is no useful single “crypto fee” to compare. Check the fee estimate and transaction details in your wallet immediately before signing.

How the three fee systems differ

Network Main fee driver Common denomination Where the fee goes What to check before signing
Bitcoin Transaction size and demand for block space Satoshis; fee rates commonly shown in sat/vB The miner that includes the transaction Estimated size, fee rate, and confirmation target
Ethereum Gas used and the price per gas unit ETH; gas prices commonly shown in gwei Base fee is burned; priority fee goes to the validator Operation complexity, gas estimate, base fee, tip, and maximum fee
XRP Ledger Specified transaction cost, adjusted for network load and transaction type Drops of XRP No beneficiary; the specified cost is destroyed Current recommended cost, transaction type, and signed Fee field

These are protocol network fees. An exchange withdrawal charge, wallet-provider charge, or fiat conversion cost is separate and is not included in the network fee.

How Bitcoin transaction fees work

A Bitcoin transaction spends one or more unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs). Its fee is the difference between the total value of its inputs and the total value of its outputs. The fee is therefore not primarily a percentage of the amount being sent. Bitcoin’s transaction guide explains the UTXO model and fee calculation.

What matters for competition is the transaction’s signed size and the fee rate offered for that size. Block space is limited, and miners choose which transactions to include. When demand is high, a transaction offering a lower fee rate may wait while transactions with more competitive rates are selected. See the Bitcoin block-chain guide for how transactions enter blocks.

Fee estimates are not confirmation guarantees

Bitcoin Core can estimate a fee rate against a confirmation target, and its send RPC documentation uses satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB) for fee-rate controls. A higher rate can improve a transaction’s competitiveness, but an estimate cannot promise an exact confirmation time: demand and miner selection can change. The Bitcoin Core send RPC reference describes these controls.

How Ethereum gas fees work

Ethereum uses gas to measure the execution work a transaction consumes. A simple ETH transfer generally requires less gas than a smart-contract interaction, which may involve more computation. The fee depends on both the gas used and the price charged per unit; sending the same value does not by itself determine the fee. See Ethereum.org’s gas documentation.

Gas used, base fee, and priority fee

The per-unit price consists of a protocol-set base fee and, when offered, a priority fee (tip). The base fee is burned, while the priority fee goes to the validator. A transaction can also specify a maximum fee per gas. That maximum is a ceiling, not necessarily what the transaction ultimately pays. Ethereum’s EIP-1559 specification describes the fee-market mechanism.

A documented example—not a live quote

Ethereum.org uses 21,000 gas units as an example for an ETH transfer. With the example’s assumed 10 gwei base fee and 2 gwei priority fee, the calculation is 21,000 × (10 + 2) = 252,000 gwei, or 0.000252 ETH. Those figures illustrate the calculation; they are not a current estimate or a promise about what a transfer costs.

How XRP Ledger transaction costs work

An XRP Ledger transaction specifies its cost in XRP drops in the transaction’s signed Fee field. The cost is destroyed, not paid to a validator or another beneficiary. The XRPL transaction-cost documentation reports 10 drops as the standard minimum and says the required cost can increase with network load; transaction type can also affect it. The 10-drop figure is protocol guidance reported by that documentation, not a permanent fee promise.

Because the specified amount is destroyed, check the current recommended cost for the network conditions and transaction type before signing. Do not assume that a wallet’s displayed amount will stay appropriate if conditions change before you submit.

How to compare fees before sending

  1. Identify the network and transaction. A basic transfer and a contract interaction can have different execution needs; Bitcoin transaction size also depends on its inputs and outputs.
  2. Read the estimate in its own unit. Bitcoin commonly displays sat/vB, Ethereum gas prices are commonly displayed in gwei, and XRPL specifies drops of XRP. These numbers are not directly comparable.
  3. Check the network conditions and settings. Review Bitcoin’s fee rate and confirmation target, Ethereum’s gas estimate and maximum-fee setting, or XRPL’s current recommended cost and signed Fee field.
  4. Review separate charges. Confirm whether an exchange, wallet provider, or conversion service adds a charge beyond the protocol fee.

Network recommendations can change with demand, and transaction details matter. A dollar comparison is meaningful only when it uses current estimates for clearly specified transactions and conditions; a static “typical fee” can mislead.
