How AI Search Engines Use Affiliate Content to Answer Product Questions

AI search answers can draw on affiliate comparison pages, but a citation is neither proof of independent testing nor a guarantee that the answer accurately reflects its source.

AI search engines can use affiliate reviews and comparison pages as source material when answering questions such as “best life insurance” or “which policy should I choose.” They retrieve web information and generate a response from it; the answer is not, by itself, an independent product test. A citation shows that a page was presented as a source, not that a commission caused its selection or that every claim in the answer is supported by that page.

How can an AI search answer draw on affiliate content?

In broad terms, an AI search answer can combine information retrieved from web pages with generated text. The exact process differs among products, so one platform’s description should not be treated as a universal account of how all AI search engines work.

What Google says about its own AI search features

Google says its AI search features draw on relevant, up-to-date pages in the Google Search index. Its Search Central generative AI guide describes retrieval-augmented generation, also called grounding, and query fan-out: for a broad question, the system may generate related searches to find pages addressing different parts of the question. It then generates an answer and may show links to pages that support it. This is Google’s explanation of its features, not a description of ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or every other system.

Why a comparison page may fit a buyer’s question

A page that compares products can already organize material around a decision: a shortlist, selection criteria, product details, trade-offs, and recommendations. That structure may be relevant to questions like “best robot vacuum,” “best life insurance,” or “best X compared.” It does not establish that the page was selected because it earns commissions, that the engine endorses its publisher, or that a reader will visit it.

How often do AI product answers cite affiliate publishers?

A 2026 analysis by Suff Digital offers a measured example, not a universal rate. It examined 17,524 answers to 2,000 “best product or service” questions across 20 shopping categories and five AI products; the answers were collected on September 23, 2026. Its classification counted roughly 150 publishers identified as earning affiliate commissions.

Reported finding What was counted How to read it
70% of answers cited at least one affiliate review or comparison publisher Answers in that study’s question panel, using its list of roughly 150 affiliate publishers A finding for this sample and classification, not the share of all AI answers or a causal explanation of why sources were cited
33.9% of citations Citations in the average answer that cited any source A share of citations in sourced answers, not a measure of every page an AI system may have considered or retrieved

The study documents observed citations. It does not show that affiliate status makes a page more likely to be cited, that all cited affiliate pages are dependable, or that the cited publisher receives a visit.

Does being cited mean the answer is accurate?

No. A citation can help a reader trace a claim, but its presence does not prove that the source supports every sentence around it. The cited page may support only part of an answer, omit a qualification, or be less current than an official product document.

A 2026 preprint study of Google AI Overviews issued 55,393 queries over 40 days, from March 13 to April 21, 2026. Across 98,020 decomposed claims, 11.0% were unsupported by the cited pages. That measure concerns support in the pages cited; it is not a finding that 11.0% of all AI answers are wholly false.

  • Open the cited page and locate the relevant passage rather than relying on the citation label alone.
  • For a financial product, verify material terms against the provider’s current official documentation. For insurance, that means checking the actual policy terms and eligibility conditions, not just a comparison-page summary.
  • Check whether a figure is dated and whether the page explains its method, exclusions, or limitations.

Why do affiliate reviews require extra scrutiny?

An affiliate publisher may earn a commission when a reader follows a link and makes a purchase or takes another qualifying action. That financial connection is relevant context for judging a recommendation; it does not, by itself, prove either poor quality or reliable testing.

The Federal Trade Commission’s Endorsement Guides FAQ says affiliate relationships should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously so readers can judge the weight to give an endorsement. Its guidance is: “The closer the disclosure is to your recommendation, the better.” The FAQ also cautions that the phrase “affiliate link” alone may not tell consumers that the publisher receives payment.

Google separately asks sites in affiliate programs to mark those links with rel="sponsored", whether links are added manually or dynamically. This is a search-engine link attribute, not a substitute for a plain-language disclosure to readers. Google says failure to qualify affiliate links can lead to manual or algorithmic search actions.

For a review to help a reader assess its recommendation, it should explain what was evaluated, how products were selected, what limitations apply, and whether the publisher actually tested the products. A publisher should not imply hands-on experience it did not have. The ACCC’s 2024 inquiry report summarizes concerns raised in earlier work about highly optimized, low-quality affiliate pages ranking highly in organic search; that is a documented quality concern, not evidence that every affiliate review is low quality.

Does Google guarantee that eligible pages will appear in AI answers?

No. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet to be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It also says that meeting requirements does not guarantee that a page will be crawled, indexed, or served.

Google’s published guidance emphasizes foundational SEO and useful, distinctive material rather than special AI-only tricks. It says a first-hand review provides a perspective based on personal experience, whereas a summary of existing content merely restates information already available. That is publisher guidance, not a promise that first-hand reviews will rank or be cited. For a publisher, the practical implication is to add verifiable evidence, current details, and a transparent account of the review method instead of simply rearranging existing product claims.

What is known about AI answers and publisher traffic?

AI answers can affect whether a user visits a source, but the available findings do not establish a universal change in affiliate earnings. The studies below measure different outcomes and should not be combined into one estimate.

Evidence What it measured What it does and does not establish
INFORMS Marketing Science study, 2026 More than 50,000 ChatGPT-origin transactions across 973 ecommerce websites during August 2024–July 2025, alongside 164 million transactions from other channels Observed transactions attributed to ChatGPT; the authors caution that last-click attribution can understate channels that helped with earlier discovery
Agarwal and Sen, 2026 preprint Preregistered field experiment with 1,100 participants; compared search experiences with AI features removed and an AI Mode-only experience Removing AI Overviews and AI Mode increased publisher click-through in the experiment; an AI Mode-only experience reduced click-through and reported user experience and trust. These results are not an estimate of affiliate revenue or an effect on every publisher

These findings indicate that referral patterns can change, while leaving the financial effect for a particular affiliate publisher unsettled. Click-through, attributed transactions, and commissions are different measures; results also depend on the study setting and attribution method.

How should publishers and readers evaluate a specific engine?

There is no controlled, current, side-by-side engine comparison established here. A useful comparison would hold the prompts and collection window consistent and record the geography, engine and version, question wording, sample size, and date. It would then check source types, whether cited pages support individual claims, which products are named, and whether users are sent onward. Without that shared method, citation percentages from different studies should not be treated as a direct ranking of engines.

For readers, the practical approach is to treat an AI answer as a starting point: inspect its citations, check important claims against the underlying pages, and account for disclosed commercial incentives when weighing recommendations. For publishers, transparent review methods and useful, original evidence serve readers whether or not a page is cited.
