How AI Can Help You Navigate a Layoff—and Where It Cannot

A chatbot can organize a job search, edit factual resumes and rehearse interviews after a layoff. It cannot replace therapy, legal advice, human judgment or personal support.

After Microsoft announced roughly 9,000 job cuts in July 2025, Matt Turnbull, identified by Engadget as an executive producer at Xbox Game Studios Publishing, suggested that people facing or recovering from layoffs use ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. His July 4 LinkedIn post proposed AI for career planning, resumes, networking, career pivots and emotional reframing. It was deleted after significant criticism.

The practical lesson is narrower than the post’s framing: a chatbot can reduce the administrative friction of a job search, but it is not a therapist, employment lawyer, benefits adviser or substitute for human support.

What Matt Turnbull recommended

Turnbull’s post addressed people already laid off or “quietly preparing” for a layoff. The examples, preserved in Engadget’s report, included:

  • Creating a 30-day job-search plan.
  • Identifying roles and possible career pivots.
  • Tailoring resumes for studios, publishers or startups.
  • Writing a LinkedIn “About” section.
  • Drafting messages to former colleagues and contacts at target companies.
  • Reframing imposter-syndrome feelings after a layoff.

This was personal advice from Turnbull, not an announced Xbox or Microsoft employee-support program. The post’s deletion does not establish a formal retraction.

Why the post drew criticism

Timing and power

The recommendation arrived immediately after Microsoft’s July 2025 layoff announcement. It also came from an executive at a company publicly emphasizing AI investment and transformation. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella later acknowledged the “uncertainty and seeming incongruence” of eliminating roles while the business was performing strongly and investing heavily in new technology in a July 24, 2025 employee communication.

That juxtaposition does not prove that AI caused the Xbox cuts. It does explain why chatbot-based advice could feel particularly tone-deaf to workers whose industry is already debating automation and job displacement.

Administrative help is not emotional care

Editing a resume and processing grief are different tasks. Redundancy can involve financial fear, anger, anxiety, depression and loss of professional identity. The American Psychological Association says general-purpose generative-AI chatbots should not replace qualified mental-health care and may lack reliable validation, oversight and crisis management. See the APA health advisory.

Where AI can genuinely help

Turn a vague search into a manageable plan

A chatbot can organize information you provide into a checklist, rather than deciding what your life should look like:

  1. Collect employment dates, roles, shipped projects, responsibilities and measurable outcomes.
  2. Separate target roles into primary, adjacent and fallback categories.
  3. Set weekly application, networking and recovery goals.
  4. Track contacts, applications, follow-ups and interview stages.
  5. Draft reusable materials for you to edit.

The benefit is lower activation energy when concentration is limited. Review the plan for realistic workload, financial constraints and rest days.

Translate specialist experience

AI can suggest language for transferable skills, provided you verify every inference:

Game-industry experience Possible broader language
Production scheduling Project or program management
Live operations Lifecycle operations, experimentation and cross-functional delivery
Narrative design Content strategy, writing, UX writing or world-building
QA leadership Test strategy, release management, risk identification and quality operations
Publishing Partner management, go-to-market planning and portfolio operations

These are possibilities, not proof of qualifications. Do not let a model convert “supported” into “led,” or a shipped-title credit into responsibilities you did not perform.

Edit resumes without inventing facts

Start with your own factual bullet. Ask for several versions emphasizing scope, action, result and leadership, then remove inflated claims and jargon. If a metric is missing, require a marker such as “[metric needed]” rather than a fabricated number. Match the final wording to the job description and have a person check accuracy and tone.

Draft personal networking messages

AI can provide a first draft, but an effective message needs a real shared context, a specific reason for contacting the person, the type of help requested and a low-pressure next step. Mass-sending identical text can damage relationships. Rewrite the draft in your natural voice.

Practice interviews

Give the model a job description and your factual background. Ask it to pose one question at a time, identify missing evidence in your answer, simulate follow-ups and suggest questions for the hiring manager. Do not permit it to invent achievements, confidential project details or technical experience.

Prompts with useful guardrails

Thirty-day plan

“I was laid off from a [role] in [industry]. Using only the facts below, create a 30-day job-search plan with weekly goals, rest days, networking tasks and application tasks. Do not invent experience or assume I want to remain in the same industry.”

Transferable skills

“Identify transferable skills for [target roles]. For each, quote the evidence from my summary and label any inference as an inference. Do not add tools, responsibilities or achievements that are not stated.”

Resume bullet

“Rewrite this bullet in concise, achievement-focused and leadership-focused versions. Preserve every fact and number. If a metric is missing, insert [metric needed].”

Networking note

“Draft a short message to a former coworker. Mention our work on [project], say I am exploring [role type], and ask whether they know of relevant openings. Avoid sounding urgent, transactional or mass-produced.”

Interview practice

“Ask one interview question at a time for this job. Use only my background. After each answer, identify what was clear, what evidence was missing and one concise improvement. Do not write a fictional answer for me.”

Emotional journaling, with limits

“Help me journal about feelings after a layoff. Ask reflective, non-clinical questions and do not diagnose me or present yourself as a therapist.”

If you may harm yourself or cannot stay safe, contact emergency services or a qualified crisis resource. A chatbot cannot reliably assess or manage a crisis.

Use AI safely after a layoff

  1. Sanitize inputs. Remove names, project codenames, unreleased details, internal metrics, medical information, salary records, identification numbers, termination letters and severance terms.
  2. Check data controls. OpenAI says consumer content may be used to improve models depending on settings; business offerings are not used for training by default unless customers opt in. Review the provider’s current terms. OpenAI describes Temporary Chat at its privacy page, and its data-use explanation is at this FAQ.
  3. Demand evidence. Tell the model to preserve facts, identify inferences and mark missing information.
  4. Verify every output. OpenAI warns that ChatGPT responses can be inaccurate or misleading; check names, dates, numbers, credits and technical claims against your records.
  5. Personalize and review. Rewrite drafts yourself and ask a trusted colleague, mentor or recruiter to review important materials.
  6. Keep people in the plan. Contact former colleagues, recruiters, professional groups, family and qualified advisers instead of replacing those relationships with more prompting.

Questions AI should not answer for you

  • Whether to sign or negotiate a severance agreement.
  • Employment-law, unemployment, benefits, visa or non-compete questions.
  • Diagnoses or treatment for depression, anxiety, trauma or burnout.
  • Whether a reassuring chatbot response proves that you are psychologically well.
  • Career rankings presented as reliable labor-market evidence.

Use an employment attorney, union, government agency, benefits professional or qualified mental-health clinician for those decisions.

Special considerations for game workers

Game professionals often have portfolio evidence and credits that require careful interpretation. Verify exactly what you shipped, your role, the scope of your responsibility and any public credit before putting it on a resume. A model may infer a larger team, budget, audience or leadership role than the facts support.

Career pivots also need more than keyword matching. Ask for several adjacent paths, require the evidence for each suggestion and decide whether the work, location, seniority and financial runway are realistic. Never paste unreleased game information or colleagues’ personal data into a consumer chatbot.

Do you need to pay for an AI tool?

No. A free tool may be enough for basic planning, editing and interview practice. Paid plans can be considered only when usage limits materially interfere with the search. Current ChatGPT plan details are listed at OpenAI’s pricing page; Microsoft says Copilot credits and limits vary by Microsoft 365 plan and can change at its support page. LinkedIn subscription features and terms likewise change; consult LinkedIn Premium directly.

None of these subscriptions is a replacement for therapy, legal advice, benefits help or human networking.

The Bottom Line

AI can make the paperwork and structure of a job search easier after a layoff. It cannot make a mass layoff humane, verify its own claims or replace the people and professionals a worker may need.
