How Aave V3 Oracle Configuration Differs Across Networks and Markets

Aave V3 has no single oracle setup for every deployment. Compare markets by reserve source, fallback, denomination, L2 safeguards, and authority.

Aave V3 does not use one universal oracle address or identical price-feed setup everywhere. Oracle configuration is specific to a market and, within it, to each reserve. To compare two deployments, check the market identity, each asset’s configured source, the fallback oracle, the price denomination and—where applicable—L2 sequencer safeguards.

Why Aave V3 oracle setups differ

Aave’s Oracle documentation says each reserve is associated with an oracle contract. In practice, the configuration you need to inspect belongs to a particular market instance and reserve, not to “Aave V3” as a whole. Different networks can have separate deployments, and one network can host distinct markets, such as Ethereum Core and Ethereum Prime.

Aave identifies Chainlink Price Feeds and CAPO as primary oracle contract types on production markets. Chainlink feeds provide price observations; CAPO is designed for correlated assets, such as wrapped assets intended to track an underlying asset. Governance selects the oracle used for a reserve, so configurations can differ between markets and can change over time.

The configuration layers to compare

Layer What it determines What to inspect
Market and reserve identity Which deployment and asset the settings apply to. Network, chain ID, market name, and the reserve’s asset address.
Reserve price source The source configured for an individual asset in that market. Call getSourceOfAsset(asset) on the market’s AaveOracle, then identify the returned contract and its role.
Fallback oracle The fallback contract configured for that AaveOracle. Call getFallbackOracle() and establish what the returned contract does for the deployment in question.
Price denomination The currency and scale used for the market’s returned prices. Check BASE_CURRENCY and BASE_CURRENCY_UNIT before comparing numeric price values across markets.
L2 sequencer safeguards Whether borrowing and recovery behavior depend on sequencer health. Where a PriceOracleSentinel is used, inspect its deployment and sequencer-oracle configuration, along with its recovery grace-period behavior.
Administrative authority Which permitted roles can update source and fallback settings, and how those roles are governed. Check the market’s access-control configuration and relevant governance actions.

How AaveOracle returns a price

AaveOracle is the market-facing lookup and source registry. Its interface supports asset-to-source mappings, a fallback oracle, and price returns denominated in that market’s BASE_CURRENCY. Aave’s contract reference describes the returned value as the supported asset’s price in the market’s base currency, in wei. Raw return values from two markets therefore are not directly comparable until their base currencies and units are understood.

The documented implementation uses configured Chainlink aggregators as its first source and forwards to the fallback oracle if an aggregator answer is nonpositive. That is implementation-specific behavior: verify the contract version deployed for the market rather than assuming every deployment follows the same low-level path.

What changes on an L2

An L2 market may include a PriceOracleSentinel as an additional operational safeguard. Aave documents that the sentinel can disable borrowing under specified sequencer-related conditions and allow a grace period after recovery so positions can be made healthy. This is separate from identifying the price source for each reserve: a market’s feed configuration and its sequencer-health controls answer different questions.

Do not assume every L2 uses an identical sentinel setup. Check whether the particular market has a sentinel, which sequencer oracle it references, and the applicable recovery behavior. The sentinel’s sequencer-oracle setting is changed through a Pool Admin-only method.

Who can change oracle configuration

Aave describes reserve oracle selection as a governance decision. At the contract level, the AaveOracle reference restricts setAssetSources and setFallbackOracle to callers with the POOL_ADMIN or ASSET_LISTING_ADMIN role. Those caller permissions describe who can invoke the setters; they are not, by themselves, a complete account of the protocol’s governance process.

Aave’s access-control documentation says deployers have resigned their POOL_ADMIN roles and describes POOL_ADMIN instances across V3 networks as governed by Guardians multisigs or Governance Bridge executors. Role holders and governance arrangements should still be checked for the market and network being examined rather than inferred from another deployment.

A practical market-by-market comparison

  1. Identify the exact deployment. Record the network, chain ID, market name, and reserve asset address. Do not treat a network name alone as a market identifier.
  2. Find the market’s AaveOracle. Use the relevant market deployment information, then query getSourceOfAsset(asset) for each reserve you are comparing.
  3. Identify each returned source. Determine whether it is a Chainlink feed, a CAPO contract, or another configured source. Do not infer feed parameters such as heartbeat or deviation thresholds from the source’s category.
  4. Check fallback and denomination. Query getFallbackOracle(), and record BASE_CURRENCY and BASE_CURRENCY_UNIT. Establish the fallback’s behavior for that deployment before relying on it.
  5. Check L2 controls where relevant. Inspect the PriceOracleSentinel and sequencer-oracle configuration, then account for the documented downtime and post-recovery behavior.
  6. Trace authority and changes. Confirm the current role configuration and review governance actions that set or changed the relevant parameters.

Aave’s market data schema also exposes a reserve-level usdOracleAddress. It can help locate market data, but it should not automatically be treated as the complete AaveOracle source-and-fallback configuration: confirm the contract relationships on-chain.

What public configuration summaries do not establish

A single universal matrix of live oracle addresses, feed versions, heartbeat and deviation parameters, fallback behavior, and sentinel settings is not established by the general Aave documentation. These values are mutable and need to be verified for the particular market and reserve. A deployment repository or market-data field can aid discovery, but its existence alone does not prove the value currently active on-chain.
