In the United States, regular shared-hosting rates currently run from $17.59 to $30.79 for a one-month term, while a three-year term costs $395.61 to $791.61 upfront, depending on plan. Email, backups, security, domain privacy and taxes can increase the real bill.
The public sales page currently advertises Hatchling from $6.95 per month, but HostGator says promotional pricing applies only to the initial term. Check the checkout invoice and your Customer Portal’s Renewal Center before buying. Prices and availability can vary by country, account, term and promotion.
HostGator pricing at a glance
The table below uses HostGator’s published regular U.S. prices. “Monthly equivalent” is an averaging calculation; HostGator bills the selected term upfront rather than collecting only that amount each month.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shared Hatchling | One small website | $17.59 | $158.27 total ($13.19/month equivalent) | $395.61 total ($10.99/month equivalent) |

Shared hosting: the usual starting point
Hatchling
Hatchling is the entry plan for one website. It is the logical starting point for a personal blog, portfolio or low-traffic brochure site, provided you accept shared resources and monitor renewal pricing.
Baby
Baby is the practical step up when you need multiple websites or Hatchling’s limits become restrictive. The higher fee does not turn shared hosting into dedicated infrastructure; performance still depends on traffic, software, databases, caching and other accounts on the server.
Business
Business targets larger or more resource-intensive small-business sites. Compare its included limits and features with the actual workload rather than assuming the label guarantees faster page loads.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

- The available storage capacity may vary.
The shared-hosting page advertises free SSL, a website builder, more than 100 mobile-friendly templates, an image library and a 99.9% uptime guarantee. Those are marketing and service terms, not an independent measurement of page speed or real-world uptime. See the current offer at HostGator’s shared-hosting page.

How HostGator billing works
- Promotion: A headline such as $6.95 per month may apply only to the initial term. The term length and first invoice must be confirmed at checkout.
- Upfront charge: A 12- or 36-month selection is billed as the complete term. A displayed monthly figure is only the equivalent rate.
- Renewal: The plan renews at the regular rate unless HostGator shows a different account-specific offer. Current regular annual totals are $158.27 for Hatchling, $224.27 for Baby and $290.27 for Business.
- Extras and taxes: Add-ons, domain charges and applicable sales tax or VAT can be added to the invoice.
- Review before renewal: Open the Renewal Center in the Customer Portal to see current hosting, domain, CodeGuard and SiteLock prices. Do not rely on an old comparison article.
HostGator says it has no setup fees, but “no setup fee” does not mean every useful service is included. Its explanation is at the pricing and setup-fee article.
WordPress hosting: pay for benefits, not the label
HostGator lists regular WordPress prices from $24.19 per month for Baby to $38.49 for Pro. Before choosing one over ordinary shared hosting, verify the features that matter to you: automatic and restorable backups, staging, managed updates, caching, malware protection, migration assistance, site count and resource limits. A WordPress-branded plan is not automatically fully managed, and the published price does not establish that it includes every premium WordPress tool.

HostGator’s comparison documentation also says Optimized WordPress plans are no longer offered to new sign-ups, although existing customers continue to receive support. Treat legacy names shown in support pages as existing-customer products, not current buying options. See HostGator’s comparison chart.
eCommerce hosting costs more than the hosting line
| Plan | Regular monthly price | Regular annual total |
|---|---|---|
| Online Store | $29.95 | $299.40 |
| Online Store + Marketplace | $47.95 | $479.40 |
The higher tier adds marketplace-oriented capabilities. Your total store budget may also include payment processing, premium themes and extensions, backups, security, email marketing, inventory tools, marketplace integrations, development and maintenance. Therefore a clearly published hosting fee is not evidence that the hosted store is cheaper than WooCommerce or another platform.

These are published regular prices; longer terms lower the monthly equivalent but require advance payment. The cPanel-inclusive prices include the license. A VPS can provide more resources and control, but it can also make you responsible for operating-system updates, firewalls, security, backups, malware response, DNS, mail and performance tuning. Dedicated Linux and Windows hosting provides an isolated server and administrator access, but current dedicated prices were not stated in the available pricing table; check HostGator’s live chart or checkout rather than relying on an old number.

These are regular published add-on rates, not guaranteed checkout prices. See HostGator’s add-on chart.
Example annual budgets
Using regular one-year Hatchling pricing ($158.27), Hatchling plus Professional Email is $188.26 before tax. Adding CodeGuard Basic brings it to $236.14; adding Domain Privacy makes $251.09. Adding SiteLock Essentials as well produces $346.97. These examples assume each product is purchased at its listed annual rate and exclude the domain registration itself, taxes and any promotion.

Email is no longer a simple assumption
HostGator now documents paid cPanel Email plans tied to the hosting plan. Mailbox limits, sending restrictions and billing can differ by account. Alternatives include HostGator Professional Email, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, registrar forwarding or a transactional-mail service for applications. Read the paid cPanel Email overview before assuming traditional shared-hosting email is unlimited or included.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Domains and refunds
A domain can renew separately from hosting. HostGator domains automatically renew when auto-renew is enabled, domain renewals are non-refundable once processed, and Domain Privacy has its own renewal cycle. Check current charges in the Customer Portal using HostGator’s domain-renewal guidance.
HostGator’s public pages currently conflict: the shared-hosting sales page advertises a 45-day money-back guarantee, while the comparison chart states 30 days for shared, VPS and dedicated hosting. The applicable period and exclusions can vary by product and billing arrangement. Confirm the current terms before purchase, especially for monthly plans.
Is HostGator good value?
It can make sense when
- You want a conventional cPanel-style account for a small or moderately trafficked site.
- You value a broad path from shared hosting to VPS or dedicated hosting.
- You are comfortable checking renewal prices and removing unused add-ons.
- A simple WordPress or website-builder setup is more important than premium managed tooling.
Look elsewhere when
- You are choosing solely on the introductory headline price.
- You need predictable long-term pricing or bundled professional email, backups and security.
- You require high-performance infrastructure without shared-resource variability.
- You need advanced managed WordPress operations or a specialized commerce platform.
- You are not prepared to administer a VPS.
Compare providers using first invoice, renewal invoice, required commitment, website count, storage and resource limits, backups, email, SSL, migration, support, upgrade options and the cost of moving away. Hostinger publishes current offers at its pricing page; Bluehost explains promotional renewals at its pricing page and renewal FAQ; SiteGround’s managed WordPress option is at its official page. Their promotions and renewal terms must be compared at checkout on the same date.
How to avoid an expensive renewal
- Record the hosting and domain renewal dates.
- Open the Renewal Center several weeks beforehand.
- Remove unused CodeGuard, SiteLock, email, SSL and other add-ons.
- Check whether Domain Privacy is renewing separately.
- Compare equivalent plans from competitors using total first-term and renewal costs.
- Export a complete site, database, mailbox and DNS backup before changing providers.
- Confirm how email addresses and application-generated mail will migrate.
- Disable auto-renew only after replacement hosting and domain arrangements are ready.
The Bottom Line
HostGator is a reasonable convenience-focused choice for beginners who accept shared hosting and actively monitor renewals. Its introductory price is not its long-term price: use the full upfront invoice, regular renewal rate and add-on total—not the advertised monthly equivalent—to decide whether it fits your budget.
