Open-source security startup Hopper announced its emergence from stealth on April 22, 2025, alongside a $7.6 million seed funding round. SecurityWeek reported that the company is building a software risk management platform focused on identifying which vulnerabilities in open-source components may affect an application.

What Hopper does

Hopper sells a business-focused platform for managing risks in open-source software. The company says its approach uses function-level reachability to help teams distinguish vulnerabilities that are present in a software inventory from those connected to code paths an application actually uses. This is Hopper’s product description, not an independently verified assessment of its accuracy or security outcomes.

SecurityWeek reported that Hopper also describes automated asset discovery, hidden-vulnerability detection, and support for complex web frameworks. The company said its platform can be deployed without agents or changes to a customer’s CI setup. Those capabilities and deployment claims are attributed to Hopper; they have not been independently established in the cited reporting.

Hopper’s current website lists function-level reachability, container scanning, license scanning, and remediation and insights among its platform areas. That list reflects the company’s current positioning, not independent product validation: Hopper’s official site.

Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future
  • If you want to build a better future, you must believe in secrets.
  • The great secret of our time is that there are still uncharted frontiers to explore and new inventions to create. In Zero to One, legendary entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel shows how we can find singular ways to create those new things.

How function-level reachability is meant to help

Software composition analysis, or SCA, helps organizations identify open-source components and associated vulnerabilities. A package-level finding can flag a vulnerable dependency, but that alone does not show whether the application executes the vulnerable function. Function-level reachability aims to add that finer-grained context: Hopper says it identifies vulnerable code paths that are reachable from an application, helping security teams focus investigation on risks more closely tied to actual use.

Reachability is a prioritization signal, not proof that an application is exploitable or safe. The available announcement does not provide independently measured accuracy, performance results, or a head-to-head comparison with other tools.

Funding, investors and founders

SecurityWeek reported that Hopper’s $7.6 million seed round included Meron Capital, New Era, Sequoia Scout Fund, M-Fund, and angel investors. The report identified Roy Gottlieb as CEO and Oron Gutman as CTO, and said the company was named for computer programming pioneer Grace Hopper.

In the announcement quoted by SecurityWeek, co-founder and CEO Roy Gottlieb said Hopper was intended to reduce the noise and development friction he associated with existing solutions. That statement is the company’s positioning, not an independent evaluation of other SCA products or Hopper’s effectiveness. SecurityWeek’s April 22, 2025 report covers the launch and funding announcement.

What the announcement does not establish

The cited reporting and Hopper’s current site do not establish the platform’s pricing, customer count, independently measured performance, or an affiliate or referral program. The funding announcement explains the company’s product direction and financing, but it is not enough on its own to determine whether Hopper is a fit for a particular organization.
